<div><a href="https://www.facebook.com/typeofwood" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Type of Wood Charities</a>  has partnered with Brooks Laich, World Playground and <a href="https://www.taasalodge.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">TAASA Lodge</a>  to raise funds to build a primary school dormitory in Ololosokwan Village located in Northern Tanzania.

<div>The village is home to members of the Maasai tribe, a Nilotic ethnic group that mostly resides in regions of Northern Tanzania and Southern Kenya. The remote location of the village means there is limited infrastructure, economic opportunity, and educational resources for its adults and 800+ children and the existing school dorm is extremely overcrowded, worn down and under equipped for the number of students.

<div>The belief that empowerment starts with education is shared by all parties involved in this fundraiser. After meeting the Ololosokwan villagers, visiting the school and seeing first hand the children who are eager to learn but lacking basic dormitory space to do so safely, we began working to create this fundraiser knowing the pooling of our resources and those of our communities can make an enormous impact for those children.

<div>The immediate need we would like to address is the boys dormitory. It is extremely overcrowded, worn down and under equipped for the number of students it serves. The boys currently sleep 4 to a single twin bed and not all of the beds have a mattress. There are only two toilets and two showers and the chambers behind the toilets fill up very quickly leading to unsanitary conditions to live in.

<div>We set our goal to $50,000 which would allow us to build a new dormitory (@ $40,000) to provide the students a safe, clean and comfortable space to live and sleep in while attending school. In addition to the dormitory, we would be able to purchase beds, mattresses, bedding and pillows, trunks for students to keep their personal belongings safe and a perimeter fence to keep animals away.

<div>If we are able to surpass our goal, additional funds would be allocated towards building additional classrooms (@ $13,000/per). There are over 800 students in the school and currently only 8 classrooms. In addition to building the classroom structure, we would allocate funds to be used on desks and school supplies. Currently the classrooms do not have enough desks for each of the students so 2 - 3 students share 1 desk at a time.

<div>Hi!  We are a small group of Stollery parents,  and advocates for community health. Yesterday, September 15, 2021, one of our long term nurses from our time at the Stollery shared this with some of us.

<div>“As a mother of a child who has had 59 operations so far, the cancellation of ALL elective surgery starting Thursday is beyond concerning. As a nurse who works at the Stollery for more than 25 years, I can tell you, we need your help. We need our parents to be diligent and vigilant about being informed and informing others. The cancellations are due to the over flow of unvaccinated adults in the ICU. Period. Pediatric nurses are once again being redeployed to the adult system to try to help with the over flow in anyway we can. Please be cautious and thoughtful about what you are posting. There have absolutely been cases of COVID at the Stollery. Not nearly as many as the adult side of course, but at this point, every bed matters. Cancellations of surgeries is in NO WAY due to the mandatory vaccination implementation. I don’t know a single health care professional who is not vaccinated or who is against vaccinations. I am sure they exist, certainly they are getting the lions share of coverage, but in acute care, we don’t have the luxury of being uninformed about vaccinations as we are barely hanging on.

<div>Her words were so powerful, it’s dire times right now. But here’s the thing, when I reached out to her, her first thought was we need to help the ICU nurses, even a coffee, “they are getting killed. It’s so sad”. And so here we are, we’re here to buy them coffee, it’s the least we could do! All of the money raised, will be used to deliver coffee and treats (in gift card form) directly to the units throughout Edmonton, AB.

<p>My name is Colleen Belisle and I am reaching out for my great nephew Owen who is 3 years old. 
</p>

<p>Owen was an active, healthy 3 year old up until mid-June when he got very sick and was taken to the hospital. 
</p>

<p>Owen was diagnosed with a tumour on his brain stem (the area that controls the heart and lung function) and underwent an urgent 12 hour surgery to remove the tumour. The drs said they got the tumour and this was a short happy moment for the family.  Owen’s tumour has been tested and as a result the family has found that this is a grade 3  ependymoma. He will be needing radiation and  then chemotherapy to kill of any remaining cells that are hiding in his brain and spinal cord. With this tumour if only 1 cell was missed the tumour could grow again very quickly. As he is only 3, the radiation treatment it will have a long-term effect on his growth and development, at the very least affecting his ability to learn and his memory. Owen is currently a very bright, happy boy who loves to learn.
</p>

<p>The radiation treatment will be starting very soon, once all of the necessary arrangements and baseline testing of his major body systems is completed. 
</p>

<p>This little boy is already afraid when any dr or nurse comes near him and we are afraid this may be a very long road for him and the family with a lot of expenses that we are not aware of yet. One or both of his parents will be unable to work during the course of his treatment. 
</p>

<p>We are unaware of how this is going to end, all we can do is pray and leave it to our very talented team of medical professionals. As we do know that this treatment is going to have a detrimental effect on his memory and learning, all we can currently do is hope that he can survive this treatment, a little boy who is just starting his life.<br /><br />Your donation will go straight to the family as well as managed by the family to help with unknown hospital expenses and any medical expenses such as medications or any medical device that may be needed in the future, as well as to ensure the family can spend the maximum amount of time possible together given the future is uncertain.

Help Owen Beat Cancer

Carolyn was diagnosed in 2015 with Pancreatic cancer.<br /><br />Chemo was recommended to shrink the tumour with the aim that surgery would be on the horizon.<br /><br />She responded well to chemo but surgery has not been an option because of a concern about metastasis in the liver.<br /><br />She went on a second round of chemo, and responded, but not as well, as the tumour continued to grow.<br /><br />Carolyn independently researched Nanoknife (IRE) to find it was available internationally and in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan (the only place in Canada currently for Pancreatic cancer)<br /><br />She was accepted as the first out of province candidiate in Saskatchewan, and chose to have treatment there as it was close to home and still in Canada.<br /><br />A written request was made to the Ministry of Health in BC for payment assistance, and was denied on the reccomendation of the BC Cancer Agency, on the grounds that it is not part of their standard of care. Chemo therapy is still their standard, even though Nanoknife almost doubles current survival rates.<br /><br />Nanoknife is a surgical procedure . It is a new cancer treatment for inoperable tumours. The Nanoknife technique destroys soft tissue tumours with an electric current, minimising the risk of damage to nearby organs or blood vessels.<br /><br />Carolyn's surgery date was May 19th, 2017.<br /><br />Carolyn has had to  front $40k out of her own pocket in order to have the procedure done.<br /><br />She is a retired healthcare professional.<br /><br />Funds donated will go directly to the upfront cost of the surgery.<br /><br />We are grateful that she was able to have her surgery performed in Canada, as this is a life prolonging option beyond chemo.<br /><br />Carolyn has an incredibly strong will to live. She has a supportive husband, 2 daughters, 3 grandchildren a fantastic network of friends that root for her daily.
