My son’s father was killed before he was born. Since then, I have been doing the best I can as a single parent, with a little help from my family. At Michael’s funeral, many people offered to help, but as time passed, that support faded. Raising a child on one parent’s income is incredibly difficult, especially in today’s economy. I can’t get government help because Michael died before my son was born, and now I have to petition the court for DNA, which costs hundreds of dollars. I’ve been sent from one office to the next, but there’s been no help. If your child’s father is alive, it’s no problem to do DNA, but if he’s deceased, we get no help—and we are the ones who need it most. My son is special needs with sensory issues. He needs therapy, and we need help. I am losing and have lost some of the only people who were helping us. I work as much as I can, and my family does everything they can, but my son deserves more. I need to get my son’s father on his birth certificate so I can start the process of getting him the support he needs. I need help with basic everyday needs, getting him the help he deserves in school and at home. I see so many people on here asking for things for animals and reaching their goals. I need a lawyer, I need help with diagnosis, DNA, and taking care of my son daily. We deserve a chance to have our own house and live like everyone else, without struggling every day just to get what others have. Regardless, my very few family members and I will continue to do everything we can to make this right. I am asking for help because my son deserves a chance to thrive, and I want to give him the best life possible. Any support, no matter how small, will make a difference for us.
