<div>In October 2025, after a series of falls and troubling symptoms, Marta was diagnosed with glioblastoma—an aggressive and fast-moving form of brain cancer that upended her and Mike’s world almost overnight.

<div>For 48 years, Mike and Marta have built a life defined by love, resilience, and unwavering partnership. Through every chapter, they have shown up for each other—especially when Mike was diagnosed with Parkinson’s and Marta became his advocate, caregiver, and constant source of strength.

<div>Within a week of her diagnosis, Marta underwent brain surgery, with doctors able to remove 90% of the tumor. She showed incredible strength in her recovery, even celebrating their 48th wedding anniversary during rehab.

<div>Following surgery came chemotherapy, radiation, and complications, including brain swelling and severe steroid side effects.

Luis Corado is about to be evicted from his family home, along with his two cats, Tori and Jordi. Aligned with Golden Gate Village and other equity and social justice efforts, SAVE OUR CITY is intent on protecting the historical legacy, rich cultural diversity and environmental integrity of our beloved community whose viability is being threatened by an aging and neglected infrastructure, gentrification, and development pressures. The 825 Drake Project by design will exacerbate these threats and must be stopped.</em>

<div>In November 2020, the Marin County Board of Supervisors voted to approve and publicly fund the 74-unit 5 story 825 Drake Avenue development without giving notice to the residents of Marin City under a state law that was adopted to fast-track affordable housing in communities that have traditionally stonewalled such development. But Pacific West, the for-profit developer, (aided by the Board of Supervisors) has instead used this law to increase housing density in the tiny Marin City community that already has a <em>grossly disproportionate share</em> of Marin County’s affordable housing. In March 2023, despite vehement objections of residents, the Marin County Board of Supervisors gave Pacific West $1.8 million and approved a $40 million bond to advance the construction of 825 Drake.

<div>Save Our City is fighting for the self-determination that Black residents have been fighting for more than 80 years - the right to have a say in what is developed in our community - the right to have a voice in what is built on 825 Drake.

<li>Most of the proposed apartments will not be affordable to Marin City residents, thus forever changing the heartbeat of this community and excelerating the rapid gentrification that is forcing long term residents out of Marin City and out of the county

<li>The proposed development is located across from the only public park and playground, situated on a dangerous blind curve where more cars and traffic pose a high risk to our children and families.
</li>
<li>an area where existing street parking is already limited
</li>
<li>an area adjacent to existing senior housing blocking entirely their sunlight and limiting emergency vehicle access in an
</li>
<li>extremely high fire hazard zone
</li>
<li>a zone prone to flooding with
</li>
<li>only one-way in and one-way out for the entire community
</li>
<li>Marin City represents only 1% of Marin County (356 acres), YET it possesses 60% of the public housing units in all of Marin.

<li><strong>825 is the final nail in the coffin of the county’s attempt to eliminate the black presence in Marin City</strong>

<div><strong>The construction of 825 Drake will overburden Marin City</strong> which occupies only .1% of the county’s land area but already holds 44% of the total Publicly Assisted Multi-Family Rental Units and 41% of the Affordable Housing Units that exist in Marin County. The development is a perversion of the SB35 legislation that should not be applied to our community.

<div><strong>The 825 development poses serious health and safety threats</strong> that are harmful and dangerous to the Marin City community. It will block sunlight to seniors living in the Village Oduduwa complex. It will have a significant impact on the parking available for residents and will impede access of emergency vehicles into the senior complex on Park Circle and adjacent streets. It will tax emergency evacuation in a community that is designated a very high fire severity zone, is a high flood occurrence area, and has one road for egress and ingress in and out.

<div><strong>SAVE OUR CITY believes that the ONLY way we CAN STOP 825 is to take legal action to halt the distribution of public funds </strong>(bonds and Section 8 vouchers) that will subsidize the project. SAVE OUR CITY has recently filed a lawsuit to stop the distribution of the $40 million Tefera bonds awarded by the Board of Supervisors in March and is anticipating filing another on disparate impact grounds soon to halt the release of Section 8 vouchers slated for the development. Without this funding, SAVE OUR CITY believes the 825 cannot be built.

SAVE OUR CITY - Stop 825 Legal Defense Fund

<div>Recently, we have been very distressed to learn that Ru is stuck in an extremely horrific situation in Ireland. She has been silently suffering through the dissolution of her marriage. The man who came to America and brought her back to Ireland has been slowly making life for Ru very scary and isolating. When Ru first moved to Ireland, she found that his family wasn’t very receptive of her and the small community she joined was very inhospitable. She tried to work at three different places and was forced to quit by people in the community who were so rude and harassed her so much that it caused extreme anxiety. Both she and Simon agreed that she could be the primary caregiver for her children until they went to school and she started helping as she could around the farm. A few years ago, Simon finally admitted to his actions towards other women that he had been gaslighting Ru over for years. But now, Simon has actually taken on a girlfriend and the harassment of Ru has become almost unbearable. Ru lives in complete isolation on the 100 acre farm. She has no access or knowledge of any family finances. Simon controls all the money and has to approve the purchases Ru makes before they go through. She only has access to the $280 that she receives directly from the government as a child subsidy. She doesn’t drive. Simon has refused to get her passport renewed up until a few day ago or to even allow their children to get theirs. (Ru has no formal form of ID, so he finally brought her to get her passport photo this last week.) We have offered to pay for these services and for tickets home, and Simon refused to let us-even when members of our extended family had died over the last winter. And his family has refused to list them as tenants so that Ru can’t claim her Irish citizenship. (You need a utility in your name at a permanent address for 3 years and their house still doesn’t qualify.) His mother could have claimed her living there since 2012 but just won’t! Unfortunately, the legal system for divorce in Ireland is long and difficult. Ru and Simon must be legally separated for 3 years before they can be granted a divorce. Due to all of this horrible stress, Ru is having a really hard time. She is an amazing mom and is incredibly caring for her children and only wants to be able to move on from this extremely toxic situation.

<div>Ru needs help! A divorce attorney in Ireland is going to cost her between $8500-20000 pounds. She has no immediate cash flow or savings and is terrified that she has no options. Simon has been mentally abusing her to the point that she doesn’t even feel safe in her home. His gaslighting is continuous. 
</div>
<div>We are gathering the funds for her so that Simon can’t access them. We want to build her a major safety net. She hopes to stay in their home, but needs legal help to do so. Simon is refusing to get “legally” separated so that he doesn’t have to pay her anything. Instead he is trying to wear her down mentally. Even his girlfriend and family are harassing her.

<div>I am terrified for my sister. We really need help. Even the smallest bit might be what we need to get her the right legal aid and to show her that she is loved and cared about. Right now she is scared and alone.

At that time, she was probably only two years old.  My friends Virginia and Alan adopted her and they say she has always been a silly ball of energy showing love to everyone she meets. Even in the stressful environment of the animal shelter she wiggled with joy when people looked her way.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57544537_1622762997439770_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="57544537_1622762997439770_r.jpeg" /><br />Steely was one of the most popular dogs at the Humane Education camp that I went to and she taught many children that pit bulls are often just sweet dogs with great potential. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57544537_1622761976888395_r.jpeg" alt="57544537_1622761976888395_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />When I found out that Steely had cancer I wanted to do whatever I could to help her get better.  Without chemotherapy she has a very small chance of surviving beyond this year.  In 2014 my dog got cancer and we were able to get her treatment that allowed her to live a long-life free of cancer. I hope we can raise enough money to help Steely do the same.<br /><br />The total cost of chemotherapy is going to be a little more than $8,000.
