<div>When the devastating Eaton fires tore through Southern California, many families were left in ashes—literally. Among those affected were two incredibly hard-working and humble individuals, Jorge and Genaro Serrano, who recently began working on our street when our landlord switched gardening services.

<div>In the short time I’ve known them, I’ve been deeply moved by their resilience and dedication—but nothing prepared me for what they shared with me recently.

<div>Jorge lost his entire home. Nothing remains but rubble. Just days before the fires, he also suffered a heartbreaking personal loss with the passing of his daughter in Mexico.

<div>Genaro lost half of his house and is now staying with his sister along with his wife and three kids.
</div>

<div>When I found out about their situation, my first reaction was shock. I said to Jorge, “What are you doing here cleaning our yard? Go, get out of here—this doesn’t seem right.” But Jorge and Genaro, with their incredible humility, simply smiled and said, “No, no, this is our job. It’s easy and will be quick.”

<div>I don’t know anyone else who could suffer such devastating losses and still show up to work the next day, cleaning yards because they NEED to get paid. Their resilience is humbling, but their situation is heartbreaking.

Their beloved Altadena home, where they lived with their two children, Josephine, 6, and Oliver, 3, and two dogs, was burned to the ground with nearly all of their belongings inside. Luckily, they are safe but are displaced and in need of support as they begin to put their lives back together, find a new place to live, and replace everything that was destroyed.

<div>Thank you for taking the time to read this. My name is Alexa Muñoz. I’m a semi-retired teacher who’s been on five year long medical leave. I live with a host of chronic illnesses that have made full time work just about impossible. I have scleroderma, lupus, and am a kidney transplant recipient. As you might imagine, living in the age of covid-19 has made my life much harder. Just this year alone, I contracted covid and RSV; I was recently diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension, which has required me to receive oxygen therapy. I’ve been hospitalized 6 times this calendar year. My last bout with covid put me in the ICU and completely shut my lungs down.

<div>Because of all of my health needs, I have not been able to work in any way. I am 3 months behind on my rent ($1584 per month). I have received a warning about eviction court. I have to do something right now to save my home.

<div>At the beginning of June a urinary blockage put our 7 year old rescue cat, Major Dude, in the hospital. The blockage resulted in the need for two surgeries, one to remove the blockage, and one, a Perineal Urethrostomy, to shorten and widen the urethra of cats who are prone to urinary blockages.

<div>After the surgery, he healed slowly and continued to have trouble urinating. Back at the Emergency Vet, it was discovered that he had a tear in his urethra that required catheterizaion in the hospital for 5 days to heal. The tear healed well, but he has since come home and continued to have difficulty urinating.

</div>
<div>On the morning of 6/29, we admitted him back into the veterinary hospital to determine if he needed a revisional surgery, or some other form of treatment. He is now scheduled for a revision of the PU surgery on 7/1 and is currently staying around the clock at the Penn veterinary hospital.

</div>
<div>He has been incredibly patient and sweet throughout this whole process, dutifully taking several medications daily and putting up with the dreaded cone 24/7. A sweet, relaxed and loving dude, he has easily charmed the staff of every vet clinic and pet hospital with his purrs and signature turtle/pig nose.
</div>

<div>He is a truly special cat, and it’s been heartbreaking watching him go through so much stress and endure so much pain and discomfort. We want to do everything we possibly can for him.
</div>

<div>Unfortunately, our pet insurance only covered $7500 of his treatment, and right now his total medical costs are approaching $24,000.
</div>

<div>Last week, we were devastated by losing our beloved brother Darryl Keith Pettus. Darryl was a talented DJ, artist, music fanatic, and kind-hearted, loving person. He had the funniest sense of humor. Unbeknownst to us, in December, Darryl was in the hospital for a leg injury, and when he was released from the hospital, he was displaced from his home. Over the past few months, we struggled to locate Darryl until just last week. When we found him, we learned he had been homeless and needed shelter. While we worked to find him shelter, we learned of his devastating untimely death. His death has left a large hole in our hearts, and our goal is to provide him with the proper memorial he deserves. We are asking for donations to cover Darryl’s funeral. Any amount is truly appreciated.

<div>People’s Kitchen Philly was launched in March 2020 as a response to the swelling community needs of hunger and employment. The People’s Kitchen continues to serve free and fresh meals (200,000 meals to date) and currently maintains 30 community gardens that were transformed from abandoned plots of land. In the garden, community members and volunteers grow fresh fruit and vegetables, used to prepare meals in the kitchen and the produce is also available for the neighbors.<br /><br />In June 2022, the Philadelphia Sheriff’s Office placed flyers on several of our community gardens in Southwest Philadelphia (multiple lots on 61st and Reinhard), notifying us that they would be putting the land up for auction— one set of gardens will be auctioned on July 7th and the other set on August 5th. On these lots, we are already growing a variety of fresh produce, including corn, cabbage, spinach, watermelon, strawberries, and garlic. We have planned to build an urban greenhouse on one of these lots. The People’s Kitchen is fundraising to buy these lots to permanently grow food for the community. <br /><br />Our community gardens are concentrated in the Southwest Philadelphia community that was one the center of the crack epidemic and is still one of the poorest sections of Philadelphia. The People’s Kitchen is revitalizing the neighborhood by transforming previously abandoned plots of land into gardens, growing free produce for the community, as well as a place where community members and volunteers gather to hold cookouts, plant vegetables, and build community solidarity. The community in Southwest Philadelphia needs community land to be protected; our gardens should not be sold to developers who plan on sitting on the land until the neighborhood becomes gentrified and expensive. They should continue to be owned by the community and the people to do what is best for the community around it.<br /><br />We need your help. We anticipate the lots that we are growing food on will be auctioned off for at least $10,000. The story of their deaths has since become a shocking and cautionary tale shared worldwide. In a text sent just six days before his passing, Peter explained why he couldn’t leave the door open/unlocked for Rachel to deliver him meals or to circulate fresh air in the house:   <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/61329583_1637334101774356_r.png" alt="61329583_1637334101774356_r.png" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /> <br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/61329583_1637334157321064_r.png" alt="61329583_1637334157321064_r.png" width="100%" media_type="3" /> <br />As he was dying, their "mom" getting into the house was still a concern to him.<br /><br />Within 8 hours of being notified of Peter’s passing, the woman was filmed breaking into the home of Rachel’s deceased father and removing numerous items from the house for over an hour.  <br /> <br />She has since changed the locks on the house and falsely claims her estranged son (who isn’t named on the deed) signed it over to her. <br /> <br />She also informed the coroner she would “not make arrangements for Peter" until Rachel's private contact information is given to her. A vicious tactic by a serial abuser. Rachel's newest fear is that she won't be able to lay her brother to rest as he wished, alongside their dad. <br /><br />It is Rachel’s intention to  ensure this person does not benefit from the death of the child she abandoned.  What could have been a clear, cut and dry probate case will undoubtedly be a drawn out legal fight.
