<div>On Monday of the week of Christmas, our sweet daughter Zazie suddenly lost movement in her arms and legs and was rushed to the hospital. What should have been a joyful week leading up to Christmas and her 7th birthday on December 30th quickly became the most frightening and overwhelming time of our lives.

<div>After she hit her head on her bed, what seemed like a minor incident quickly turned into a life-threatening medical emergency. Because the area of her spinal cord that was affected also impacts breathing, Zazie required respiratory support from EMTs in the ambulance as she was transported to the hospital. In those terrifying moments, our world stood still.

<div>After extensive testing, doctors determined that Zazie had suffered a spinal cord stroke, a condition that is extremely rare in children. They also discovered that Zazie’s spinal cord anatomy is different, which likely made her more vulnerable and contributed to the severity of what happened. Learning this was devastating, but it also helped explain why such a rare and serious injury occurred.

<div>Zazie spent over two weeks at Johns Hopkins Children’s Center, where an incredible team worked around the clock to stabilize her and provide critical care. This week, she was transferred to Kennedy Krieger Institute for inpatient rehabilitation, one of the nation’s leading pediatric rehab hospitals, to begin intensive therapy as she works to regain strength, movement, and independence.

<div>Zazie’s journey is just beginning. We have no clear timeline and no way of knowing what the road ahead will require. Between prolonged hospitalization, specialized rehabilitation, therapy, medical equipment, travel, time away from work, and ongoing care, the financial impact is already significant and will continue to grow.

A Family’s Hope, A Child’s Comeback: Zazie’s Recovery Fund

<div>Hello, my name is Margaret Assad (maiden name Maher). I am the oldest of 9 children. The Maher Family is one of the larger families in Monroe. I am a lifelong resident of the Monroe-Woodbury area, a big sister, a mother and a friend. I am writing this request with a heart full of love and determination. As a Class of 1996 MW Alumni, I had the BEST childhood! The best teachers in the BEST school district EVER, GO CRUSADERS! Summers were even better! YAC, The REZ, Walton Lake....so many good times! Monroe has grown...Monroe has changed.

<div>When I was in High School, another large family moved into town, the PAUL Family. Many of you probably know and remember Jermaine Paul, winner of the THE VOICE! Or Pastor Wendy from Harriman's United Methodist Church!

<div>But, in 2001, it was Laura Paul, the baby, that won our hearts when she took MW Track and Field by storm, powering through the 100 meter hurdles to BREAK the NYS Championship Record, take Section IX GOLD and go on to Nationals where she later becomes the national champion.......and to this day (8/26/2025) she is STILL the record holder for the 100m hurdles at MWHS.

<div>Laura would finish High School a champion. She would go on to Barton Community College in Kansas, a school known for cranking out Olympic Champions to include Tyson Gay and Veronica Campbell-Brown. In 2002, Laura was assaulted at school and unable to fulfill her destiny as a track star. She came home, to Monroe, broken and defeated. But Monroe built her back up. Laura is a current Monroe resident.

<div>In 2023, more than 20 years after her brutal attack, Laura could no longer ignore her passion to run. God was calling on her for more. God was calling her back to her destiny. She created a Non-profit organization called the All American Blazers, a track and field team for kids. After 2 years, she has over 300 team members!!! She has a Board of Directors!!!!! She has a team of highly skilled and trained coaches!!!!

<div>So naturally, when the Monroe Temple went up for sale, she wanted it for her team and the greater community. She wants to make sure that kids in Monroe have a safe space, like we did. A place to go to learn, develop, make friends and so much more. Our plan is to repurpose this for after school programs, an affordable and local day care program and of course the home for the Blazers.

<div>But we need help to get there. We need money and volunteers. The Blazers are currently applying for and soliciting grants locally, and state and nationwide. We are also going to be hosting several types of fundraisers, where our kids will also help by vounteering. But we need as much help as possible to keep this beloved Monroe location, local to Monroe. We need the community to stand up with us and help us secure this building for the MW and Orange County kids that could benefit from it for years to come.

<div>Hello, my name is Noah and I want to raise money for my family and me. My mom is a single parent of 6 and adopted 2 kids on the side. 3 of her kids are already out of our living situation and have moved on with life. She is the hardest working woman that I know. She works a full-time job and does Instacart and Spark deliveries on the side, yet we are struggling with our living situation.

<div>We have to move out of our duplex by 8/1/2025 and haven’t found a new spot yet due to money and other problems with it. Every apartment and house we looked at wanted at least $3000-6000 to move in, and it’s normally $1300-1700 a month, which is out of our budget. On top of that, I am dealing with a liver disease, arthritis, a slipped disk in my lower back, and fibromyalgia at just 16 years old. I've been working and working and working to help my family the best I can, but everything just doesn’t seem to work.

<div><strong>My mom’s office at the hospital is getting closed down in September due to the hospital having money issues, so she is actively looking for a job and trying to find an affordable place to live.</strong> We’ve been homeless before, but in this situation, we didn’t want the 2 kids she adopted to have to go through that. We wanted them to live well and not have to worry about if they have a shower or if we are going to eat tonight.

<strong>Hello. Peter Mullings Jr. (PJ) has tragically passed after a brave year and a half battle with cancer. He would have been 3 years old in February. His family and all who had the privilege of spending time with him will never forget his beauty, love, strength, inspirational will to live, love of life and so much more.  Funds are needed immediately so that his amazing, strong mom Karlene, can fly him home to Jamaica so that his grieving dad, Peter Mullings, and family can lay him to rest.  What Karlene, Peter, their families, and close friends have endured is indescribable heartbreak, but their strength, dignity, and love for PJ were just as indescribable. The bond between Karlene and PJ, playing with him, laughing with him, holding him, comforting him, advocating for him, loving him and being so incredibly in tune with his every moment is humbling and to be in awe of.  PJ's spirit and soul will live forever, but his body is still in NY, so please any amount you can give to help this amazing family find some peace would be deeply appreciated.  Every dollar donated will go from me right to Karlene.
