<p>----- den deutschen Text findet ihr weiter unten -----<br /><br />Wake Up Community Nursery &amp; Primary School is located inside the Nakivale refugee camp in Southern Uganda. The school, founded in 2016, is under the tutelage of “Run 4 Community Rescue (R4CR)”, an organisation with the focus on teaching English language to French speaking Congolese Refugees. During the following years Wake Up school started to introduce the Ugandan curriculum while hiring teachers that are able to teach in French, English and Kiswahili. This move enables students to more easily transition into the Ugandan education system. The school is currently hosting 295 children.<br /><br /><iframe media_type="0" media_id="5nczZKFPrCc" class="youtube-replace" title="YouTube video player" style="margin-bottom:20px;width:560px;height:315px;" src="//www.youtube.com/embed/5nczZKFPrCc/?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen="1"></iframe> <br />In early 2020 Mushiga, one of the founders of R4CR, contacted Jan Glasmeier and together they started planning a project for the construction of four classrooms + a teacher room for the <br />Wake up school. Mugisha and Jan co-designed the new masterplan for the school by considering the use of locally available material and natural resources. <br />One of Uganda’s most common material are Earthen Bricks (Adobe), also know as “Road Bricks”. The current school walls are made of these road bricks but without preparing a solid base on which the walls are protected from rain and flooding. The missing base resulted in fast deterioration of the walls. Recently, during a day of heavy rainfall, two classroom walls collapsed and the building had to be evacuated. The effected building is in such bad condition, that it has to be replaced. Jan has extensive experience working with earthen material. During his eight years residing on the Thai-Burma border Jan completed around twenty buildings using a variety of earth construction techniques. <br /> <br />After finalising the design for the new school campus, Mugisha and Jan compared local material prices and estimated the total project costs at 14.918$ (see detailed budget attached). <br />The majority of funding (9.000$) has been raised through individual donations. This campaign aims to raise the remainder of around 5.918$. The budget also includes salary for workers from the local community.<br /> <br />Start of the construction is planned for early December 2021. Jan, together with Oliver Giebels, an architect from Munster in Germany, will travel to Uganda to supervise the start of the construction. Jan and Oliver are working on this project free of charge.  The architectural design has been done as a Pro Bono project. Ich bin Oliver, 37 Jahre alt und arbeite seit 2017 als Architekt in Münster - achja, und ich liebe meinen Job. Am liebsten sind mir Projekte, die für eine Vielzahl an Leuten einen Unterschied in Ihrem Alltag machen können, immerhin verbringen wir doch rund 90% der Zeit in unserer gebauten Umwelt. Das können ganze Stadtquartiere sein, öffentliche Gebäude wie Bibliotheken oder eben auch Schulen und Kindergärten.<br /><br />Ende März habe ich Jan Glasmeier bei seinem Vortrag an der Hochschule Augsburg kennengelernt, bei dem er von seinen Sozialarchitektur-Projekten im Südost-Asiatischen Raum berichtet hat. Während seiner 8 Jahre in der Grenzregion Thailand/Myanmar hat er dort gemeinsam mit der lokalen Bevölkerung, regional verfügbaren Bauprodukten und traditionellen Bauweisen erstaunliche Projekte realisiert. Die meisten der hier lebenden Menschen kommen aus den Nachbarländern und sprechen französisch, Uganda ist englischsprachig. Diese Sprachbarriere sorgt für immense Probleme, bei den jungen und den alten. Die örtliche Organisation R4CR (<a href="https://run4communityrescue.wordpress.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">run 4 community rescue</a> ) hat sich diesem Problem angenommen und gründete 2016 ein Sprachen-Zentrum für Erwachsene und 2017 auch eine Schule für deren Kinder - die WAKE UP COMMUNITY NURSERY AND PRIMARY SCHOOL. Gerade in der Regenzeit drohen sich die Außenwände aus Lehmziegeln im wahrsten Sinne des Wortes aufzulösen. Das neue Gebäude soll daher nach dem Entwurf von Jan auf einem erhöhten Fundament stehen und ein Dach mit großem Dachüberstand schützt vor Regen und spendet Schatten an trockenen und heißen Tagen. In der ersten Bauphase sind vier Klassenzimmer und ein Lehrerzimmer geplant, in einer zweiten Bauphase soll dann das bestehende Gebäude inkl. Toilettenanlagen ersetzt und somit der quadratischen Schulkomplex vervollständigt werden.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/56307264_1620903671527205_r.jpeg" alt="56307264_1620903671527205_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br /><strong>Kosten und Spendenziel</strong><br />Von den prognostizierten Kosten in Höhe von rund 14.900 USD fehlen uns noch 5.900 USD <strong>(4888€)</strong> um mit dem Bau beginnen zu können. Die Kosten beinhalten sowohl die Baumaterialien als auch ein Lohn für die Arbeiter vor Ort und wurden von Jan und dem in Nakivale lebenden Mugisha ermittelt. Wie genau sich die Kosten verteilen, seht ihr hier. Jan und ich werden an dem Projekt Pro Bono arbeiten, also ohne Vergütung. Zum Baubeginn planen wir beide außerdem nach Uganda zu reisen um die erste Bauphase zu koordinieren und vor Ort mit lokalen Arbeitern Lehmbau-workshops durchzuführen. <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/56307264_16212535661164_r.jpeg" alt="56307264_16212535661164_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />Die Regenzeit endet Mitte Oktober. <div>We are a group of six volunteers from the UK and Germany. As a small
</div>
<div>group of architecture students, artists and young architects we’re going to support
</div>
<div>Jan and his project in Mae Sot, Thailand. Together we will design and build three
</div>
<div>new classrooms for 20 to 25 students (including purchasing the necessary
</div>
<div>construction materials) for Light school, a migrant learning centre in Mae Sot, run
</div>
<div>by Burma Migrant Teacher Association. Please check out Jan Glasmeier's website for more

<div><strong>Background</strong>
</div>
<div>Mae Sot has a relatively stable number of Migrant Learning Centres (MLC) which
</div>
<div>provide education to the migrant and refugee community from Burma. Following the
</div>
<div>latest military coup in Burma on 1st February 2021, the numbers of students
</div>
<div>attending these MLC’s has been steadily increasing.
</div>
<div>There are currently three main organisations supporting MLCs in the Mae Sot area.
</div>
<div>They are, Burma Migrant Worker Education Committee (BMWEC), Help without
</div>
<div>Frontiers (HwF), and Burma Migrant Teacher Association (BMTA). These
</div>
<div>organisations support the schools financially by providing stationery, school trucks,
</div>
<div>remuneration for teachers and bus drivers and paying rent for the school land.
</div>
<div>Unfortunately, there are usually very limited funds available for maintenance of
</div>
<div>school buildings, or for constructing extensions to the schools.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The Light School</strong> currently hosts 100 students from Nursery to Grade 7. This number
</div>
<div>of students is projected to rise in the coming years due to the ongoing instability
</div>
<div>within Burma. This creates an issue of insufficient classrooms within the school
</div>
<div>premises, resulting in the sharing of classroom space between different grades.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>The Project</strong>
</div>
<div>Within a duration of five weeks, we are going to be in Mae Sot, to design and build
</div>
<div>three new classrooms located on a fallow on the school terrain.
</div>
<div>Through these workshops, we will demonstrate local construction techniques using
</div>
<div>Bamboo, Eucalyptus and Adobe Bricks (Baan Din). The Adobe bricks will be
</div>
<div>produced in collaboration with local students, university students, and volunteers
</div>
<div>by using local soil, combined with water and rice husk as a fibrous material.
</div>
<div>The bricks are then sun-dried over a period of 2-3 days until they are ready to use.
</div>
<div>Together with local workers who will supervise the construction, we will begin by
</div>
<div>constructing the classroom walls using these handmade adobe bricks. This
</div>
<div>participatory approach will reinforce feelings of ownership within the students,
</div>
<div>who will be using the classrooms daily.
</div>
<div>The roof structure will be put together using recycled second-hand timber from the
</div>
<div>lumber shops in town. In support of environmental sustainability, we will focus on
</div>
<div>reducing the amount of concrete used in the build, and instead rely on
</div>
<div>environmentally friendly materials and vernacular architecture to be climatically
</div>
<div>responsive. We are confident we can complete this project within a 5-week
</div>
<div>timeframe and within the calculated budget.
</div>

<div>To date, we have raised approximately 60% of the construction costs of 6000
</div>
<div>Euros and would like to request your support in raising the remaining 2.500
</div>
<div>Euros for the construction of three classrooms.
</div>
<div>If the funding goal is exceeded, we will also be able to support the school with new
</div>
<div>sets of tables and chairs for the students.
</div>

<div><strong>Die Light School</strong> betreut derzeit 100 Schülerinnen vom Kindergarten bis zur

<div>7.Klasse. Aufgrund der anhaltenden Instabilität in Myanmar wird erwartet, dass die
</div>
<div>Schüler*innenzahlen in den kommenden Jahren weiter steigen. Dies führt zu
</div>
<div>Platzproblemen, da nicht genügend Klassenräume vorhanden sind. Somit müssen
</div>
<div>sich verschiedene Klassen Räume teilen.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Das Projekt</strong>
</div>
<div>Innerhalb von fünf Wochen werden wir in Mae Sot drei neue Klassenzimmer auf
</div>
<div>einer ungenutzten Fläche des Schulgeländes entwerfen und bauen.
</div>
<div>Im Rahmen von Workshops demonstrieren wir lokale Bautechniken mit Bambus,
</div>
<div>Eukalyptusholz und Lehmziegeln (Baan Din). Die Lehmziegel werden in
</div>
<div>Zusammenarbeit mit lokalen Schüler*innen, Universitätsstudierenden und
</div>
<div>Freiwilligen aus lokalem Boden, Wasser und Reishülsen als Fasermaterial
</div>
<div>hergestellt. Die Ziegel trocknen 2-3 Tage in der Sonne, bevor sie einsatzbereit sind.
</div>
<div>Gemeinsam mit lokalen Arbeiter*innen, die den Bau beaufsichtigen, beginnen wir
</div>
<div>mit dem Errichten der Wände aus den handgefertigten Lehmziegeln. Dieser
</div>
<div>partizipative Ansatz stärkt das Gefühl der Eigenverantwortung bei den
</div>
<div>Schüler*innen, die die Klassenzimmer täglich nutzen werden.
</div>
<div>Die Dachkonstruktion wird aus recyceltem Holz von lokalen Holzhändler*innen
</div>
<div>zusammengesetzt. Um die Umwelt zu schonen, reduzieren wir den Einsatz von
</div>
<div>Beton und setzen stattdessen auf umweltfreundliche Materialien und eine
</div>
<div>klimatisch angepasste Bauweise im Sinne der traditionellen Architektur. Wir sind
</div>
<div>zuversichtlich, dass wir diese Aufgaben innerhalb des vorgegebenen Zeitrahmens
</div>
<div>und Budgets erfolgreich umsetzen können.
</div>

<div>Bisher haben wir etwa 60% der Baukosten in Höhe von 6.000 Euro gesichert und
</div>
<div>bitten um Unterstützung, um die verbleibenden 2.500 Euro für den Bau von drei
</div>
<div>Klassenzimmern zu sammeln. Sollten durch die Kampagne noch mehr Mittel

<div>gesammelt werden, möchten wir die Schule zusätzlich mit neuen Tischen und

<div>Stühlen für die Schüler*innen unterstützen.
