<div>Dr Tina Cassar has become known throughout the Bluegrass over the past 20 years not only for her excellent equine veterinary skills, but her limitless compassion for animals and their owners. The tougher the case, the more tenacious Tina is, with positive outcomes more often than not. Ironically, Tina has had to turn that determination and drive inwards the past 4 months, especially this past week. As of right now, both Tina and her newborn son are in intensive care, in separate hospitals.

<div>Tina and her partner, Scott Snider, were expecting their first child together, due late March 2024. Halfway through the pregnancy, they learned that their son had a congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). This meant he would be born with severely underdeveloped lungs. He would need intensive care immediately after birth and would need several surgeries.
</div>
<div>As is Tina’s style, she wanted to do the utmost possible in the situation, which meant undergoing surgery on her baby in utero while she was only 27 weeks pregnant. In late December, Tina had the surgery and has been in Cincinnati Children’s Hospital since then. Tina faced complications in the past month, culminating in an emergency C-section on February 25 at 36 weeks. Baby John was born at 4 pounds 3 ounces. He was immediately placed on life-support consisting of a heart-lung by-pass machine and underwent his first surgery to repair his CDH at two days of age. He suffered a brain bleed and had additional abnormalities identified that may have a lifelong impact. Baby John is still critical but stable and is facing months of life-support in intensive care and many more medical/surgical procedures during his childhood.

<div>As heartbreaking as the situation with Baby John is, the family has been dealt another blow with Tina developing acute heart failure herself hours after Baby John was out of surgery. The cause of the heart failure and Tina’s long-term prognosis is still undetermined. Tina has been in the University of Cincinnati Cardiac ICU for the past 5 days. Once she is stable enough, further diagnostics will be performed.

<div>Medical costs, as well as Tina’s inability to work for an unknown extended time period, are daunting. It is our hope we can show Tina the same level of compassion and care that she has shown all of us for the past two decades.

<div>We have setup this fundraiser for the loving family of Luis Yamil Marcano Pastrana. Luis had lost his life on Sunday January 7th 2024 to a tragic motorcycle accident at the young age of 19. He had recently found out he was going to be a father for the first time and was very proud of that moment. Luis lived with no fear and was so full of life. He always had the most infectious smile and laugh that would light up any room. He loved his family and friends deeply while always being concerned and willing to help in anyway that he could. Luis was on his way to do great things as a jockey but he was more than just a jockey. He was a son, grandson, brother, friend, soon to be father and a great young man who will be remembered forever. On behalf of his family and unborn child we are asking for everyone who knew him and anyone who didn't to help the family for funeral costs and help for his unborn child when it's born into this world to carry on his life. Extensive renovations are now required in order to facilitate access and movement within the new dwelling for two full sized power-chairs. The installation of medical equipment and amenities will also be necessary. These essential facilities will need to include – ceiling hoists, profile beds and wet rooms so that the boys can live their lives with dignity and with some degree of independence. In addition, a specialised mobility vehicle will be purchased in order to transport the boys and their power-chairs to and from school, for activities, and for social visits to their friends and relations.

<div>Greetings everyone. My name is Carrie Brogden and Jay Goodwin and I are looking for help for our dear friend, Stuart Morris, or as he is very affectionately known as Stu Mo. He and his long-term girlfriend, Patty, were stunned when Stuart woke up on Christmas Eve morning with some mild paralysis of his left side. Colt Pike took him to UK where he was diagnosed as having had a stroke. Unfortunately, the paralysis continued to get worse, leaving him with no function of his left arm (but has feeling and sensation), partial function of his left leg, some slurred speech and mild facial paralysis. He had his second Cat scan on Christmas Day and his Dr. is optimistic that he can recover most if not all of his functionality but it is going to take time, a lot of therapy, heart, love and money. Please take the time to donate to this wonderful family and help them through this most difficult time. Everyone that has ever met Stuart knows what a lover of life, kids, horses and people he is. <strong>During this tough time with the Covid 19 going on, we </strong><span style="font-weight:900;">experienced</span><strong> a heartbreaking time with one of our employees Antonio Sosa Silva.  Antonio is a </strong><strong>Hotwalker, hard worker, loved by all staff members, and mostly, loved by the horses.  Not only a Hotwalker in the barn, a brother, a role model, a fatherly figure.   The love he showed to the horses he worked with seven days a week can only show us how much love he showed to his family.  He worked seven days a week for his family and horse.  He is family and he is Horse Racing. He was a proud father.<br /><br /></strong>Antonio would never ask for any help.  He'd walk into the barn, take care of his work, then continue around the barn asking if others needed help finishing up.<br /><br />The other day, I walked into the barn and Antonio was hot walking a Horse.  For the first time, He asked me "Jack, doing you mind giving this horse a couple of rounds as I need to take care of something".   I walked the horse for 5/10 minutes but then had another staff member go and check on Antonio.  <br /><br />The news was not good.  Antonios  daughter was murdered and they took his granddaughter into custody.  The hurt/tears from Antonio who was grounded at the time was heartbreaking.  We tried to pull together as a team but no words at the time could make Antonio feel better.  We are with him now and supporting him during this difficult time.<br /><br />He has expensive attorney fees to fight to get his granddaughter released and back home.  During this tough time in the world, Antonio is going through this also.<br /><br />Any donations would be greatly appreciative during this time. Bob has worked with horses all his life and has been a mainstay at Churchill Downs for over 20 years. He has been a friend and entertained us all for years. The stories and laughs we have all had with him are endless apart from being a great rider on the easy and not so easy horses.<br />Bob has had a serious accident just outside Oaklawn Racetrack where he was working for the winter. He has serious head injury which is going to need a lot of rehabilitation firstly in a nursing home and then on to a rehab center and not to forget the massive hospital bills already incurred.<br />We ask his friends and the racing community that you please help the best you can. No matter the amount. It all helps!!

On Thursday December 7, the Lilac Fire overtook San Luis Rey Training Center where hundreds of Thoroughbreds were stabled. Horsemen tried their best to evacuate barns to get both themselves and the horses to safety. Amongst those people was <a href="https://www.bloodhorse.com/horse-racing/articles/225096/trainer-suffers-severe-burns-in-san-luis-rey-fire" target="_blank">Martine Bellocq</a> , a trainer who had six horses based out of San Luis Rey. <br /><br />In putting the safety of her horses over her own safety, Martine suffered second and third degree burns on more than 50% of her body. She was airlifted to a specialized burn intensive care unit medical center where she is being treated. Sadly, Martine and her husband Pierre ended up losing two of their six horses in the fire.<br /><br />Losing an animal is always tough, but for the Bellocq's this has created a devastating impact on their way of life. Martine and Pierre have always been involved in the horse industry. For them, horses are more than just a business--they're a way of life. <br /><br />For those of you who personally know Martine, I think you'd agree with me on two things: 1. She <strong>ALWAYS</strong> puts her horses' well being before her own and 2. Her fierce determination will get her through this. <br /><br />All funds will go directly to the Bellocq's through Stefanie Hincks, Martine and Pierre's daughter, and will be used for medical treatment and rebuilding after everything they have gone through. Thanks to all the employees and volunteers who have stepped up to ensure the safety of the horses in such a scary time. We are thankful for such a tight knit community both in San Diego and across the whole horse racing industry.

His treatment will continue at home, this will consist of weekly appointments with psychological and medical professionals, thankful that they have health insurance but the medical bills have far exceeded what insurance can cover. If you can support the O'Brien's in anyway it is appreciated.<br /><br />The following post was written by Liam’s mother and has since gone viral.<br /><br />There has been a lot of talk about bullying lately. I would like to share my family’s experience with bullying. My beautiful son Liam turned 13 years old on September 8. He should be in school with his friends getting excited about high school and playing soccer, but he is not. He is at a medical center in Princeton NJ being treated for depression and an eating disorder. He has actually been hospitalized for 5 weeks. He hasn’t been home or slept in his bed. He hasn’t been able to watch football with his dad on Sunday’s. How did we get here? Liam went into 7th grade very happy. He had lots of friends, he was always on the go, meeting friends on 7th street, riding his bike, playing soccer and he loved food. A cowboy sandwich was his absolute favorite. He made the 7th grade soccer team and was so happy and proud. He is an amazing soccer player and he earned a spot on that team. As the season ended and winter came, Liam gave me back his iPhone. He said, “Too much drama Mom”. Then he stopped going to 7th street. He hung out at home with us. I was happy but I kept asking if anything happened and was everything ok? He said he was fine. He played soccer in the spring with his travel team. Soccer was the one thing that remained consistent. He played every day. He carried a soccer ball everywhere we went. I kept asking don’t you want to go hang out, make plans with friends? He said no I’m fine. Towards the end of the year, he came home very upset that someone had punched him on the way to the bus at school. Liam said he didn’t know who it was. I reported the incident but no cameras were in that particular area of the building and no monitors saw anything. School ended and soccers tryouts came and Liam made the team we thought he wanted to make. Liam didn’t pick up the soccer ball for the rest of the summer. I was so confused. He started going to work with his dad at the racetrack. He started to ride horses and really liked it. He went up to Saratoga at the end of July for almost 3 weeks. While he was there my husband said Liam is not eating like he used to and when he came home I noticed the weight loss. He started to eat just 1 meal a day. I kept trying to talk with him. What is going on ? Nothing Mom, I’m fine. I took him to the doctor and he had lost about 10lbs since June. 2 Days later he was admitted to cohens children’s hospital. He hated it and said, I will eat, please let me come home. I went to bat for him. I thought he really needs to start school with his friends. I went into Garden City Middle school on the first day and met with guidance. I met with the nurses and made them aware of what was going on with Liam. I was told staff would be aware and he would be safe. Liam came home on Friday with a bruise on his face. I kept asking what happened? He said nothing, he banged it by accident. That was his birthday and we went out to celebrate that night. He didn’t eat. He barely ate the rest of the weekend. He lost 5 pounds that first week back. That Monday he didn’t go to school. We sat at the kitchen table and we cried and I said please tell me what happened. He finally couldn’t hold it in anymore. He told me he was bullied terribly in 7th grade. It started when he made the soccer team. 2 kids told him he sucked and shouldn’t have made the team. There were unnecessary pushes and kicks. He was told he was weird, he was fat, his freckles were weird, his eyebrows were weird. They used horrible language and called him nasty words. I asked him how often it happened. He looked at me crying and said,”Everyday Mom”<br />They broke him, he believed he was no good and stopped playing soccer because it just reminded him of them. Then he told me the bruise on his face happened on Friday, his birthday. He was putting his lock on his Gym locker and a boy came and pushed his face against the locker. He was alone in the locker room. There are no monitors in the Gym locker room. There are offices with glass windows where teachers and coaches are but not always. One of the most vulnerable places for a child is in the Gym locker room. He was not safe as I had been assured he would be.I was told “Eyes would be on him” Liam was readmitted to the hospital. My husband and I reported the incident to the school. My husband sent a letter to the principal. We met with the guidance counselor and social worker. The principal didn’t even show his face. The school conducted an investigation. Meanwhile, my son had to have a feeding tube placed and was wearing a heart monitor because his heart rate was so low from malnutrition. He had to be transferred to a more intensive facility. He is opening up more and talking about what happened and how terrible 7th grade was, he has a long road ahead of him. I wish he had come to us and told us earlier but he said he didn’t want to make a big deal or for anyone to get in trouble. I went in to discuss the results of the schools investigation yesterday. The results were unfounded. I was told Liam’s perception may have been different from reality. They just couldn’t find evidence that this happened. I have a picture of a bruise on his face, they said staff said he didn’t exhibit behavior that would suggest something just happened to him. We are so disappointed. The bully’s will continue to bully. All during this investigation the students continued to play on the school team. In professional sports, if you are under investigation for something, you usually aren’t on the field playing. <br /> I just got an email about unity day next week. Wear your orange shirt to show you are against bullying. Seriously? What a crock of shit. Parents, watch and listen to your children. I had a parent tell me her son had a heart of gold and Liam must be a sensitive boy! Again, I was speechless! <br />Liam should be able to finish 8th grade with the kids he started school with in Garden city. There are so many wonderful kids and families that have reached out and shared their experiences with bullying. We have received beautiful cards and letters of well wishes and encouragement. Liam is truly a wonderful boy. He is kind and he loves his family. We miss him and want him to be home with us. So when you put on that orange shirt, really stand behind what it is supposed to mean. I think we can do more than an orange shirt. The school has closed their investigation, but this is not over. Our dear friend Becky Cooney was in Saratoga , NY and fell backwards down a staircase. Her neck is broken and she has a very long recovery ahead of her. We are calling on ALL of our friends, family, and the horse community to please help. Anything will be greatly appreciated. We will keep you updated with her progress. Thank you in advance.
