<div>In juli gaan wij op bezoek bij de Concordia Primary School in Mombasa (Kenia) om daar te helpen bij het onderhoud van de school. Een vriendin van ons zit al 20 jaar in het bestuur van Stichting Kinderen van Kenya en zet zich in om de leef- en leeromstandigheden van Keniaanse kinderen te verbeteren. Ze heeft laten weten dat hulp ontzettend welkom is.

<div>Met het openstellen van onderwijs voor alle kinderen in Kenia is de Concordia Primary School in een korte tijd gegroeid van 200 naar 4500 leerlingen. De overheid betaalt alleen het salaris van de docenten. De school moet zelf de overige kosten die nodig zijn voor het onderhoud van de school en het geven van onderwijs financieren. De stichting Kinderen van Kenya heeft de afgelopen jaren geld ingezameld onder meer voor het bouwen van klaslokalen en het maken van schoolbankjes.

<div>Het ontbreekt de kinderen nog aan de nodige basisbehoeften zoals voldoende toiletgebouwen. De allerkleinsten (kleuters 4-6 jaar) vinden het ontzettend spannend om gebruik te maken van de bestaande toiletten. Deze bestaan uit een groot gat waar ze boven moeten hangen. Ze zijn erg bang om in het gat te vallen. We zouden deze zomer graag voor de allerkleinsten een toiletgebouw neerzetten met echte wc-potten. Hiervoor is 8000 Euro nodig.

<div>Ook ontbreekt het meisjes aan menstruatiemiddelen. Dit maakt dat ze maandelijks een aantal dagen verzuimen van school. We zouden ze willen voorzien van menstruatiemiddelen om het menstruatie gerelateerde verzuim te verminderen en meisjes de kans te geven om evenveel onderwijs te krijgen als jongens.
