The entire La Pointe Fire Department was destroyed on March 5th at 2:50am when the Madeline Island fire hall and all its equipment went up in flames. <br /><br />All 7 fire vehicles, 2 ambulances, turnout gear - pretty much everything - was a total loss. There is nothing left. <br /><br />This is devastating to a small town that relies on volunteer emergency services. It is even MORE devastating to a department that takes care of an island that is currently only accessible via an ice road that has weight restrictions.<br /><br />There IS insurance - however, not everything will be covered, and that is where this comes in. This is a fundraiser for whatever is not covered, and most importantly, this fundraiser is a thank you to the members of an incredible department who are on call 24/7 take care of their own family members, locals, tourists, ice anglers, boaters, pretty much anyone who shows up on their beautiful island. <br /><br />Without their presence on Madeline Island, we would not be safe, and we would not be able to live in this beautiful place. <strong><br /><br />There is a $100,000 anonymous matching grant in memory of Barb Rogers, a woman loved by all, who was an incredible fundraiser for many causes and people on Madeline Island.<br /><br />*** Funds from this will go to the ESB (Emergency Services Building) Town of LaPointe Special Fund, and will be matched up to $100,000, regardless if they are made via this GoFundme or direct check. <div><em>On June 30th, 2014, Todd Carlson got the diagnosis no one expects, and definitely no one wants. His uncharacteristic clumsiness and falling were because of the onset of ALS. </em>

<div><em>Lois met all Todd’s health challenges and caregiving needs compensated by love and devotion, 24/7 from 2015, until February 28th, 2023, when she broke her leg shoveling snow, requiring surgery and a forced cessation of caring for Todd.</em>

<div>The person with ALS loses all control of their muscles while retaining mental function, and basically is slowly being buried alive in a failing body. Todd’s physician couldn’t give a detailed prognosis initially, mentioning the average life span with the disease was 2-5 years after onset. But, those of us who know Todd, know he is not average, battling the disease for at least 9 years including the time before diagnosis.

<div>Due to a quickening onset, Todd had to leave his professional life at age 63 because he could no longer walk or hold a pen. Within two years he had lost his ability to speak with any clarity and quickly progressed from a walker to a wheelchair to a power wheelchair. Then, his condition progression plateaued and slowed. While he was suffering the effects of the horrible disease, his strong spirit and smile persevered. He lived looking for the best in every day and when he would hit a low note, his wife and soul mate, Lois would remind him of his many blessings and they both stayed strong meeting the challenges that rose up.

<div>Throughout his disease, Todd’s wife, Lois lived up to the vows of “better or worse, in sickness and in health” and has been his sole caregiver; lifting him daily, bathing him, tending to his personal care, dressing and feeding him by hand or through a feeding tube in his stomach. Most recently she has been managing pressure wounds and leg wounds due to compromised circulation.

<div>Lois met these challenges compensated by love and devotion, 24/7 since 2015, until February 28th, 2023 when she broke her leg shoveling snow, requiring surgery and a forced cessation of caring for Todd.
</div>

</div>
<div>Todd requires 24-hour care and was moved to a nursing home in early March, for which all expenses are paid out-of-pocket. Since there was no long-term disability insurance for Todd’s condition, Lois felt it was necessary to care for him to protect any assets. The bottom line is now, about $13,000 a month is required each month for Todd’s care alone. Their assets while greatly diminished throughout the years, are minimal but too much for assistance, and will be cleared out in short order by the costs incurred by this situation. We also want Lois to be able to retain their home in the community they love.

<div>Todd &amp; Lois have done their best to maintain the best in bad situations, but are now challenged well beyond their abilities. Todd innate resilience has bucked the odds with his condition, and while he is weak, could very well last for some time. Both Todd and Lois have contributed money, time and talents to their community before this crisis struck them and were more comfortable helping than being helped, but now need to look to receiving help instead of giving

<div>On Thursday night, Nettie was rushed to MMC in Ashland, WI, and told she had a brain bleed that needed emergency surgery in the Twin Cities. <strong>Due to the weather, a flight was not available until the next morning.</strong> When she was flown to Abbott Northwestern, they found that the bleeding had stopped, so they did further testing.
</div>

</div>
<div>After further testing, Nettie was diagnosed with Reverse Cerebral Vasoconstriction Syndrome (RCVS). She does not need surgery!
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She will have a recovery of 6 months to a year, as it can take months before the blood on her brain dissolves.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>She will be moved into a regular room in the next 24-48 hours and out of the ICU. Once she is released from the hospital, she won’t be coming home right away; instead, she will have to go to a recovery center to build up her strength to come home.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div><strong>This means that the Defoe family will be spending Christmas, and many more months, down in the Cities.</strong> Ashland is a 4-hour drive, and there will be hotel bills, meals, etc. As Bill said, it's a marathon, not a sprint, so any help at all is well, helpful.

Support Nettie Defoe's Long Road to Recovery

<div>Mara Montaño has been battling an unknown nervous system disorder for almost a year. Yesterday she was rushed by ambulance to the hospital when she was unable to feel/move her lower extremities. She was diagnosed with a severe vitamin b 12 deficiency. They are still working to rule out other diagnoses (including MS) or the reason for the severe b12 deficiency. Tamara has started b 12 injections and working with her care team to figure out a plan of care.

<div>She will continue to be in the hospital for a few more days and will need continuing care over the next few months.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Tamara loves to dance and attend powwows and round dances. Tamara enjoys spending time with her three daughters and working in her community. When Tamara is in a place to help, she helps, taking care of those around her, now it is our turn to help this mom out during this vulnerable challenging time. The financial burden should be the last thing she should have to worry about.

<div>I have known this woman since she was in middle school, and she has been a huge inspiration to *me*. Her resilience in the face of a ridiculous number of setbacks is incredible, but sometimes resilience means accepting the offers of help even when you are uncomfortable with it. <div>On September 23rd, Jadon lost the love of his life and Holden lost his loving mommy. Katie Lee Good passed away unexpectedly from a cardiac arrest. She was only 37 years old. I am currently a first-year student at UW-Madison, well not for long. As of now I will not come here this spring. Not because I don't want to, but because my enrollment is on hold at the moment due to unpaid fees (tuition and housing). Let me start from the very beginning. When I was about three years old I came to the United States illegally, not by choice of course. Up until the age of fourteen I never truly realized how different the lives between illegal immigrants and U.S. citizens were. As a child I always thought that everyone had the same opportunities to get to the same place. During elementary and middle school I was the same as everyone else, or at least that's what I thought. When I went to highschool that's when I realized that all of my previous perceptions on my life were wrong. I did not have the same opportunities as everyone else. My legal status was more visible and my dreams of going to college seemed to be  just that, dreams. Until the Obama administration passed DACA, which allowed me to have a more normal life as an "American". When this was passed I was so happy. I thought that now nothing could stop me from achieving my goals. I was in the top 5% of my class. I had more than a 4.0 GPA (weighted). When it was time to apply to universities I applied to the one school that I thought would be the best for me, UW Madison. When I was accepted last January I felt something that words could not explain. I am the second one of my siblings to graduate from highschool, and I do have a lot of siblings. Now I am the first one to attend college. Throughout last year I realized that DACA does really affect college cost. I am being charged out state tuition, even though I have lived in Wisconsin for about fifteen years. Also, I am not eligible to apply for many many scholarships/FASA. I knew this about four months before the school year started and it was to late too change school by then. My friends and family have helped me raise some funds, but I still need $1500 to be able to attend this spring.

My beloved sister and brother-in-law gave their hearts and souls to teaching at McNally Smith College of Music. At 5 pm Thursday, December 14, they were sent an email: the school was closing, they would not receive their earned paychecks the next day, and they were asked to work the last five days of the semester for free. <br /><br />Because they believe in their work, love their students, and are determined to help even as they face their own hardship, they have dedicated these last days to finding housing, transfers, meals and solutions for their students and colleagues. A look at the literally hundreds of comments from students and friends in music is a testament to how many lives they've touched, though they'd not think of it in those terms.  In short, they are thinking of others... so their sisters are thinking of them and their son, Gideon. <br /><br />We've aimed high here, but we are thinking of all the things we take for granted-- house taxes and payments, cobra insurance, and knowing full well that they will probably have dozens of students they will help... truly, the impact of anything you can give will reach far beyond their family. This is an investment in two people who have invested their lives in others, and would never think of asking for themselves. <br /><br />If this is not a way you'd want to help, please private message Sarah or Anna or Kate.
