My name is Nathan, and for the past year, my two dogs—Moses and Athena—and I have been without a home. After seven years of renting, my landlords refused to fix major issues in our house, leaving us with sky-high electric bills and health concerns from an infestation they never disclosed. Despite my efforts to address these problems, they grew tired of hearing about repairs and eventually took me to court under false pretenses, leading to our eviction. The judge never heard my side, and we were left with nowhere to go. This experience has been especially hard because I spent 13 years serving my country in the Army, including three tours in Iraq. I never imagined that after giving so much, I would find myself struggling to find a place to live. My dogs, Moses and Athena, are my family—one is even a service dog who helped me heal after my time overseas. But finding a new home has been nearly impossible, as most landlords won’t rent to someone with two pit bulls, no matter how loving they are. For a year, we’ve faced rejection after rejection, and it’s taken a toll on all of us. We’ve known real hunger and exhaustion, and the hope of having a home again feels further away every day. Today, I’m reaching out for help—not for special treatment, but for a fair shot at rebuilding our lives.
