Leo is fighting for his life! After suddenly becoming critically ill, he’s needed urgent, life-saving treatment — including a rarely successful blood transfusion generously donated by his owner’s friend dog (Xenotransfusion). The vet hospital bills have now surpassed £2500, and Leo will need ongoing follow-up treatments and tests due to emergency hospitals not providing ongoing ICU monitoring like they would for a human who has had such a serious procedure. Leo remains in critical condition therefore his owner/best friend/mum has heartbreakingly had to sign a Euthanasia consent form if treatment continues to escalate to a price that is no longer attainable which she prays is a contract that will not need to be fulfilled!
 His mum Sarah, is a 27 year old care leaver who lives alone and suffers from severe mental health.. the only consistent protective factor that keeps her going is her best furry friend Leo. She has had him since he was 7 weeks old, he has always been well looked after and never needed hospital treatment prior to developing severe regenerative anemia at 7 years old, which has sadly led to a heart mermer due to lack of red blood cells meaning he’s not producing enough oxygen.

 Sarah has already paid most of it out of pocket as he will not survive without life-saving treatment followed by a temporary alternative accommodation to monitor Leo while he is in long-term recovery to ensure no external factors trigger a decline in his condition. Unfortunately, emergency vet hospitals do not accept payment plans and due to the environmental cause being unknown, Sarah is fearful of returning to her property and has no one who can take her and Leo in due to other pets being present or allergies. Therefore, she has not only paid for alternative accommodation while Leo is so fragile but also removed everything from her household - making it a bare house - in the hopes of eliminating the unknown cause of Leo’s anemia. It took years of hard work and budgeting to furnish the property to begin with, as it is not a council flat alongside the fact she is care leaver and vulnerable young adult living in central London. This was suggested by the hospital when Leo was discharged due to the vets not being able to pinpoint the exact cause. The lack of stability of not being able to return home has caused additional emotional and financial worries.. Sarah has worked since she was 16 years old, including charity work, fundraising, pastoral roles and advocacy for mental health and care leavers. She has always been overly independent but is currently unemployed after a period of long term sick leave, due to severe mental health struggles. The one time she needed life to be kind, her cat, her everything, her reason to live — became seriously ill.

Leo isn’t just a pet — he’s her comfort, her family, her reason to keep going.
