About us:

UCLA Kyodo Taiko is the nation’s first collegiate taiko team, founded in 1990 by Mark Honda. Since our establishment 35 years ago, our ensemble has worked to promote the art of Japanese American taiko drumming within UCLA and the greater Los Angeles area, as well as instill within the community a sense of respect and understanding of Japanese American culture.

Our concert:

Every year, Kyodo Taiko’s annual Spring Concert is a completely student-led, produced, and performed event that honors the resilience of previous generations, showcases the tireless work of our members, and inspires the UCLA community to explore and learn more about taiko and Japanese American culture. Over the past 25 years, we’ve performed numerous original compositions for sold out audiences of over 300 people, and this year we will return to the stage for another memorable performance.

We are honored to present our 27th Annual Spring Concert, "Akai Ito" (赤い糸) on Saturday, May 30, 2026, from 7-9 PM in Northwest Auditorium. “Akai Ito” translates to "red string (of fate)", representing an unbreakable bond that connects people across time and distance. This theme reflects the friendship, trust, and dedication within our team, built through countless hours of practice and shared effort. Taiko can serve as an escape from our daily stresses, and the countless hours each member has put into our event is a testament to how much our team cherishes this artform.

Why we need your help:

Our Spring Concert has always been free to the public to overcome financial barriers and constraints for guests, as well as advocate for the ease of accessibility to students, faculty, and other community members. Your generous donations will directly contribute to the costs associated with the event and allow us to continue celebrating the rich history of Japanese and Japanese American culture.

Please consider supporting our efforts, and help make this 27th Spring Concert a success! We thank you deeply in advance for your endless support and generosity. All donations made to our organizations are tax-deductible, and if monetary donations are not possible for you at this time, we gladly accept any support you can give our way.

Dear past and present Broadway families,

We are celebrating the lifetime achievement of our wonderful Principal Wang and congratulating her on a well-deserved retirement!

Principal Wang has been our rock, the leader of our community for over a decade. Most of us knew her name long before our kids entered Kindergarten. Without her, there would not have been Mandarin Immersion in West LA, or our beautiful multicultural dual language immersion programs as they stand today. Anyone who knows Broadway knows that she has poured her life, heart and soul into building our school.

If you ever email her excessively as we do, you will know that she is the only Principal responding to parent and work emails at all hours of the night. Her dedication to our children is simply unparalleled.

Even though we are all so saddened by the news of her departure, we understand that she must be with her family at this time. Let's honor her and show her how we feel by sending her off with the best retirement possible!

We will be presenting this gift and a photobook by Lily Liu Chan at her retirement potluck party on June 4th, 10-1 pm. More information to come and we hope you can all join us!

Sincerely,

Denna Wu & Michelle Wang - on behalf of the retirement party team :)

Our beloved Principal Wang is retiring...

Hello, past and present Broadway families!

After a long, illustrious 20 years at Broadway, Mrs. Rae Cullen is ready to embark on a new journey and we need your help to give her the retirement send-off that she deserves!

As a current Broadway parent with a second child finishing with Mrs. Cullen, I can firsthand say that she is a phenom among teachers. Our family, as well as many others, have been with her through the pandemic, remote learning, and health issues. She has powered through it all and kept our kids on track, if not ahead. She rarely ever missed an opportunity to teach our kids. That's dedication for you.

She has instilled a love of reading in scores of Broadway kids and inspired them to explore and question. Her wisdom, encouragement, and patience have made such a difference in my own kids' educational success; I know that many other families believe this as well.

Mrs. Cullen's unwavering commitment to our kids is a testament to why I believe that she is worth her weight in diamonds. Let's show her how we feel and get her ready to shine for the best retirement possible!

Please also share a memory of Mrs. Cullen, or a message of adieu and thanks on her Kudoboard, here!

We will be celebrating both Mrs. Cullen and Principal Wang on June 4th, 10am - 1pm at Culver City Park in the grassy field and picnic tables closest to Jefferson Ave. More information and volunteer potluck sign ups coming soon. We will be presenting this fund and her photobook at the event.

Sincerely,

Michelle Wang and Denna Wu, 2nd grade MI Room Parents

Help Ring in Mrs. Cullen's Retirement!

I was so deeply saddened to hear our neighborhood traditional family bakery, Vienna Pastry, is on the verge of closing after 60+ years in Santa Monica. The current circumstances surrounding COVID-19 has devastated our industry, where hundreds of small businesses have closed. Unfortunately Vienna Pastry is now struggling immensely to stay opened.

The 3 sisters who have been running the business for the last 35 years have done their best to keep baking and serving our neighborhood families during this difficult time. We have had multiple generations celebrate their happiest occasions with Vienna’s cakes and goodies. Their family story is a true American dream of success. They left Iran to escape tyranny and discrimination, hoping to provide a better life for their kids and future generations. Watching them struggle to keep the store open has affected all of us so deeply.

We are left with no choice but to come to you, our friends, neighbors and family. We are making every effort to continue to be opened to serve our community.

We invite you to help by either donating or sharing our go fund me link on your social media to help us reach our goal, so that we can continue to serve our delicious and creative pastries and cakes. We wish you all a very happy holiday season, but even more so a healthy one. Stay safe everyone and thank you!

The Gonzalez family is well known for being deeply involved in their kids' education. They are loved by everybody at school and they are always ready to help with whatever is needed.

The father, and main breadwinner of the family, was viciously assaulted recently. He was not only robbed but heavily battered, and his wrist, arm and two teeth were broken. He was left unconscious on the floor.

Without medical insurance, the family is now incurring high costs to have surgery on his arm. They will also need to cover dentist expenses to fix his two broken teeth soon.

I'm making this fundraiser hoping we can help them cover some of their medical expenses. In these trying times, something unexpected like this is the last thing any family needs!

If you can help out in any way, please do.
Thank you / Gracias!

Let's help the Gonzalez Family!

Thank you to everyone who donated to our GoFundMe campaign! Your generous contributions helped us cover health care for our employees and bridge the costs while our stores were closed. Now that Amoeba San Francisco and Amoeba Berkeley are open again, we are ending the campaign.

A Brief History of Amoeba Music

30 years ago, Amoeba Music founders Dave Prinz and Marc Weinstein had a crazy idea. Let’s open up an independent record store, beholden to no corporate interests, that could become a gathering place for the musical community. A record store that would have an affordable mix of new and used product, that could serve as a trading post where people could bring in any unwanted music or movies for cash or trade.

So we rented a space on Telegraph Avenue in Berkeley that had been shuttered for years. And we spent the summer of 1990 going to flea markets, garage sales and running a tiny classified in the SF Chronicle that netted us some truly amazing collections. And we put that store together. Piece by piece.

Many of our friends thought we were crazy too. We were going up against some very formidable stores - Tower Berkeley and Leopold’s Records. Both were over five times as large as us - how could we compete? But we believed. And we begged and borrowed and put up everything we had in the world, all in, to make this work.

The night before we were to open, the Berkeley Inn across the street from us caught fire. We spent that night up on our roof with garden hoses putting out ember after ember wafting over from the fire. We were there that night until 4am, then went home to catch a few hours sleep before our Grand Opening.

When we arrived back the next morning, wiped out and bleary-eyed, we saw something we never expected. We saw something that to this day still gives us chills.

We saw you.

We saw our people.

There you were in a line around the block waiting to get in. And our hearts sang. What a truly glorious day that was.

The support we felt that first day has never wavered and has enabled us to open two more Amoebas.

SF Amoeba in 1997 and Hollywood Amoeba in 2001. We can never thank you all enough for the love Berkeley, San Francisco, and Los Angeles have given us all these years.

And, over time, Amoeba has become more than we ever could have imagined. We have helped millions of people from California and beyond find music that means something to them, and that means everything to us.

Our all-star staff came from all corners of the country to make us one of the greatest resources and music communities anywhere: a place where true believers can be themselves and where music is the single most important thing.

Amoeba has provided free live music to the community for decades with thousands of in-stores by renowned artists such as Elvis Costello, Patti Smith, Brian Wilson, and even the great Sir Paul McCartney.

And we have helped break up-and-coming artists at the time such as the White Stripes, the Black Keys, Anderson .Paak, Gary Clark Jr. and so many others.

Those other stores are all gone now. But we remain. Still providing and protecting the physical manifestation of our musical heritage.

We have become an integral part of each of our communities as well as the larger Amoeba community through our commitment to helping. Through your support we have been able to contribute to thousands of charitable causes over the years. Including raising over $600,000 for Hurricane Katrina rebuilding; and working with the Rainforest Action Network to preserve and protect many millions of acres of Rainforest. It has been a part of our culture from day one that we are committed to giving back and sharing the support we receive.

We have weathered many storms-911, recessions, the Internet, downloading and streaming. But we don’t know that we can weather the COVID-19 storm.

All three of our stores have been closed since mid-March and must remain closed indefinitely. With no way to generate income, our savings are running out, with bills and rent coming due, and with a primary commitment to our staff, who we are trying to keep as healthy and financially sound as possible.

We’d like to reassure you that we’re doing everything we can to keep Amoeba going, and to position ourselves to play a vital role in what is for now a very uncertain future.

We know how much we’re all going to need Amoeba again, this oasis of music, where we can find each other once more.

We’re exploring every possible means of support, including federal and local grants and loans. But these funds are not guaranteed to come in, and they won’t meet the needs of our short-term future.

So, we most humbly ask for your help. We know that this is a very difficult and uncertain time for everyone, and we understand that there are many individuals and organizations in need.

If you are in a position to help us, we would be incredibly grateful to receive that support.

Any donation to this campaign will contribute to the cash resources we need to deal with the immediate future, to take care of our staff of over 300 Amoebites, and to allow Amoeba to continue operations.

Your donations will also greatly help us finance Amoeba’s upcoming move to our new location in Hollywood this fall.

And, if you could let others know about this campaign, that would be very much appreciated, as well.

Without the physical manifestation of music, we are one electromagnetic storm away from having our culture wiped out. We will not let that happen. We are the keepers of that flame; as are you.

Though, we’re dark now, Amoeba is still there, waiting for the day when our doors can be opened again to welcome everyone back inside to celebrate the joy of what moves our souls the most: Music.

Until then, keep the faith.

Listen to Louie and Billie (Holiday or Eilish), Miles and Coltrane, Thundercat and Bootsy, Sabbath and Zeppelin, the Stones and the Beatles, Hank and Patsy, Kanye and Cardi, Otis, Prince, Gram, Django, Amy, Tyler, Sun Ra, John Prine... whoever else moves you.

And know we miss you all so much, and long for the day we can all gather again.

Thanks, as always, for all your support.

Dave and Marc

P.S.

Again, we know these are such hard times for everyone. It is a reversal for us to ask for assistance rather than give it, but these are challenging times, and we truly need your help.

We do so with deep respect and gratitude to all of our customers.

Thank you.

Help Amoeba Survive & Continue Health Benefits

Three days before his 44th birthday, Timoteo Martinez Ildefonso was struck by an unknown driver while crossing the street on break from his job at Whole Foods and died as a result of his injuries. He has left behind his beloved wife, Martha Eve Jimenez, and three kids ages 7, 9 and 12. His family is devastated and in need of financial assistance. The funds will cover funeral expenses and the family's living expenses without Timoteo's income.

UPDATE: Police are searching for a red pickup truck that witnesses said hit Timoteo. Witnesses told police that the driver stopped initially but did not call police or an ambulance, even though Timoteo was bleeding from the head and hand.
