I am writing this with a heavy heart and a sense of urgency I never thought my family would face. Today, our world was turned upside down when we received the devastating news that my mom has been diagnosed with lung cancer. This diagnosis comes at a time when we were already struggling to keep our heads above water. Just a few days before Christmas, my dad—the rock of our family—was unexpectedly laid off from his job. While we were trying to process the loss of his income and figure out how to make ends meet, things went from bad to worse. His former employer, who also provides our housing, issued us a 10-day notice to vacate. They have informed us that they are moving forward with an eviction. Within the span of a few weeks, we have lost our financial stability, are on the verge of losing the roof over our heads, and are now facing the fight of my mother’s life. My mom is the heart of our home. She is kind, selfless, and has spent her life taking care of everyone else. Now, she needs to focus every ounce of her energy on treatment and healing, but instead, she is overwhelmed with the fear of where we will live and how we will afford her medical care. Lost job before Christmas, struggling to find a job, and getting evicted from our home. Waiting on unemployment isn’t an option. I’m actively looking for work, my car broke down, and I’m running out of savings and options. Please, anything helps and I don’t want my family to be homeless.
