<div>Hello family and friends near and far. On June 18th of this year, we received the unexpected and unfortunate news that <strong>my Dad, Kurt West, has cancer</strong>.

<div>A month and a half prior to this diagnosis, he was still a very active 73-year-old man. He kept himself busy with things like family genealogy with his Cherokee Facebook pages, running around doing instacart, and growing strawberries, squash, watermelon, and corn for and with his granddaughter, Avery. He was also making plans to attend the Cherokee National Holiday in Oklahoma in August.

<div>For a few weeks, he had some pretty bad pain in his leg that kept him from those daily activities, which led to a trip to the doctor's office. Some X-rays and test procedures were done, and this is how we discovered the cancer.
</div>

<div>Since the diagnosis, it has been a pretty quick downward spiral for my Dad. As a family and per his wishes, we decided the best place for him to be was at home. My brother, sister, our mom, his granddaughter, and myself, all help with his care. Avery especially likes to make him sno-cones when he asks for them, as a sno-cone machine was his most recent gift to her and it helps to keep him hydrated. In the span of 4 and a half months, Dad has gone from being active around town and at home, to being bedridden in the last two months.

<div><strong>Dad doesn't have health coverage or life insurance</strong>, so as a family, we have been coming together to help pay for all his current daily living aspects: specific dietary needs, medications, and medical supplies such as gloves, wipes, Depends, hospital bed, shower chair, commode. We also have end-of-life expenses to prepare for.

<div>Asking for help is hard. We have always been a family to offer help to those in need. Pre-cooking dinners for a week for families in need, paying a power bill to keep the lights on, or a phone bill to keep communication active.

<div>Hi my name is Emma, On Dec. 17, 2023 my 19yr old cousin Trey Glass went missing. He left home with a friend in Kansas , Oklahoma Dec 15, 2023 that's the last time his parents saw him . On Dec 17,was the last known sighting of Trey by a local rancher whom says Trey walked through his field towards home and was never heard or seen again. Trey's phone was found a week later on a back road north of the ranch . But yet still no answer's to what has happened to Trey . Delaware County law enforcement, investigators , MMIW Chata ,and Cherokee Nation Marshals and investigators have been working to find Trey daily. Family has been meeting nightly at a tribal community bldg in town . I'm on SSDI due to schizoaffective disorder bipolar type, anxiety, PTSD, and panic disorder. I lived with agoraphobia for 11 years. I managed through a combination of therapy, medication, and attempting to live my life walking in the footsteps of my ancestors. This has worked for quite awhile now but a few months ago I began to spiral.

My medication stopped working late last month. I slipped into a major depression and my anxiety was near constant. I tried to keep going, masking what was really going on by going going so it would seem like I was ok even though I wasn't. I spoke to friends about it and was almost to my psychiatrist appointment when I began to struggle with intrusive thoughts last week.

As I'm on SSDI I cannot afford the $1200 it cost for me to be in Oakwood Springs but it was an emergency so I checked myself inpatient. I was unable to call IHS for purchased/referred healthcare prior to admission so they are unable to assist.

Despite this I'm so glad I checked in. I was able to get on the Aristada shot which almost immediately worked. I still need my psychiatrist and therapy but I'm no longer in crisis. I'm relieved because it was very scary.

I cannot stay in the living situation I was in when I went inpatient. I'm currently at a hotel until Wednesday. After that I'm not certain where I'll be.

During this time, Justina has traveled multiple times from Hawaii to help her family with her brother as he suffered through his illness. His passing came as a shock as conditions for her brother seemed to improve and had to make last minute travel plans as they learned that he passed three days after entering hospice.

Help Justina w her logistics for brother's funeral

<div>Chris suffered from a perforated bowel and septic shock on June 8th and was admitted to Mercy hospital in Fort Smith, AR. He had an emergency surgery that evening and more surgeries on June 9th, 11th, 16th, and 20th. I was told Chris was fortunate to make it through that first surgery, and I can’t thank his surgical team, subsequent teams, and ICU and nursing staff enough. He spent a total of 3 weeks in the ICU.

<div>During the June 16th surgery, the surgeon discovered a mass that was later biopsied. We found out Chris has Colorectal Cancer, which caused the perforated bowel emergency. Chris has talked to an oncologist, and there will be chemo/radiation and surgery to remove the tumor once he has completely healed from the perforated bowel. He will likely have to go out of state for surgery, but we are unsure about the details.

<div>He is healing, but it’s been a slow process. Several nurses and others have put it two steps forward and one step back, but they’ve also said that is progress! He is currently in long-term care and is starting to do better with his PT. His care team likes how everything looks and is progressing; it’s just taking time.

<div>Chris has been receiving his paycheck during this time but is being transitioned over to hourly pay. He will be able to keep his insurance, and Chris and his boss are hopeful he can work for an hour or two every day while in hospital. We are grateful to his boss and company for working with us! However, we will need help with medical and daily expenses. We do have a small savings, but it’s not much. Anything we receive will help him not stress so much and let him rest and heal as much as he needs to. Chris is ready to be back home with me and his cats, around family and friends, back to work, and back on his bicycle and geocaching again!

Callie is a beautiful 18 year old girl with her whole life ahead of her. She had just started her dream job as a veterinarian assistant. She is  a sweet kind hearted girl that I have had the pleasure of growing up with. She had been ejected from the vehicle and has multiple injuries including a skull fracture, a broken back, and more.  After being transported to Marian Medical Center she was airlifted to Stanford so they could take better care of her injuries. As of right now she is stable and has a long road of recovery ahead of her. She is awaiting to have a back surgery tomorrow. Support Chiapas Communities Against Attacks!

<div>Milly's case is a tragic one. This marmoset monkey was sold into the unregulated UK pet trade and subjected not only to neglect, but wilful cruelty and abuse.

<div>The team at Monkey World were shocked when asked to review footage filmed by the owner and confiscated as evidence by the Newport Police, which showed Milly being tormented and chased by a dog, egged on by the owner. The poor marmoset was huddled in a corner, clearly terrified, with no means of escape. Worst still was the footage of Milly in a toilet bowl, scrabbling for hold and trying to escape, whilst off-camera people laughed, and shockingly then flushed the toilet. Milly was also offered cocaine in shocking video clips that were taken from the owner’s own phone.

<div>Milly arrived at the park in January 2020 and the lack of trust she showed in people was heart-breaking. She hid at the back of the enclosure and alarm called whenever a member of staff passed by the enclosure.

<div>Gradually, the primate care staff gained Milly’s trust, helped by pairing her with another common marmoset rescued from the pet trade, Moon. Moon was quick to dash to Milly’s side to reassure her when she became alarmed- tragically all too frequent for this traumatised marmoset. With Moon by her side, Milly gained confidence in her surroundings, and began to enjoy her new home, friend, and spending time outside in their large enclosure hunting insects; a far cry from her previous life, suffering alone indoors.

<div>Milly's story touched many, and Monkey World have been overwhelmed with the number of people asking how they could help Milly, and others like her.

<div>We would like to raise funds to help the rehabilitation of Milly, and future rescues of primates like Milly from the UK pet trade over the next year.  Monkey World has been campaigning for a change in the law to stop monkeys being kept as "pets" in bird cages for the past 30 years. We have  rescued 120+ and built two specialist enclosures to house over 30 victims of the trade. While the law looks set to change with the implementation of the Kept Animals Bill, we are anticipating a large number of monkeys needing rehoming.

Deprived for years of family and friends and the ability to establish oneself professionally, the nightmare does not end upon release. With no money, housing, transportation, health services or insurance, and a criminal record that is rarely cleared despite innocence, the punishment lingers long after innocence has been proven. This is a reality that current client Kevin Strickland could soon be facing.<br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57540893_1622751067507652_r.jpeg" alt="57540893_1622751067507652_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /><br />For more than 41 years, Kevin Strickland has been incarcerated for a crime he did not commit!  The state of Missouri has robbed him of his youth, his health, and much of his life’s potential. He has largely lost the use of his legs and now uses a wheelchair. All for a crime he did not commit. All while the real perpetrators—to the extent they were prosecuted by the State—have long since been freed. All while there is overwhelming evidence of his innocence. <br /><br />On May 11, 2021, Mr. Strickland’s attorneys, led by the Midwest Innocence Project, filed a Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus with the Supreme Court of Missouri to discharge Strickland from prison based upon illegal confinement and the record before the court.  Even the Jackson County Prosecuting Attorney is requesting Mr. Strickland’s exoneration. <br /><br />As of this writing Missouri Governor Mike Parson has been made aware of Mr. Strickland’s case and the overwhelming evidence of his innocence.  At any time now Governor Parson could commute Mr. Strickland’s sentence or issue a pardon.  <br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/57540893_1622751128329237_r.jpeg" alt="57540893_1622751128329237_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" />L.R. Help Kevin Strickland After Wrongful Conviction

It is believed that he caught this on duty after attending a law enforcement conference. He was hospitalized shortly after on 8/15/2021 for low blood pressure and breathing issues. Fast forward to November 2021, he has survived the placement of a pace maker, intubation leading to a tracheotomy, medically induced sedation, ECMO, and many other things. He is now awake, alert, and able to talk. However, his lungs are shot. He is now in the process at the age of 36, yes having his birthday in the hospital, of needing a lung transplant. He has a loving and supporting family including his wife and one-year-old son. His wife has followed him to the different states to be by his side, all while juggling her own work, their son, and paying for hotels and food on the road. In addition to these costs, it is unclear how much health insurance will cover for the past months in the hospital and now the transplant.  Please help this family as they go through this life-changing experience to cover the cost of medical bills and other costs.
