With a heavy heart, we are sharing that the Sullivan-Dawes family lost their beloved home in Black Mountain, North Carolina to Hurricane Helene. Now, they are facing astronomical costs. <div>We are so grateful that Katharine, Seth, Bradshaw, and their dog Rosie are safe and sound. Just before the storm, the family traveled out of town on a much anticipated trip to celebrate their 10th wedding anniversary. It’s truly a miracle that they were gone, because on the morning of their anniversary, the peaceful Swannanoa River next to their house swelled into a raging river that ultimately swallowed their home and belongings. Reportedly, the Swannanoa River swelled from its average of 1.5 feet to an unprecedented 26 feet. Their lives would have been held in a precarious balance had they been home during the storm. We’re so grateful they are safe.

<div>Thankful for their safety, the family is now facing the reality that the water rose 3 feet inside their home, left inches of mud behind in each room, and destroyed their home as they know it. Thankfully, Kat and Seth have flood insurance that will cover some damages to the home. But, it won't cover any of the costs it will take to provide them long-term substitute rental housing in North Carolina or the costs to replace items inside the home like all of the beds, couch, other furniture, clothes, children’s books, toys, etc. We expect they will need $18,000-$36,000 to cover 6-12 months of rent for substitute housing. Any funds donated here will go directly toward these rental costs and to purchase replacement goods to make a home.

<div>Unfortunately, the flood also swallowed a beautiful, vintage airstream trailer that Katharine and Seth had renovated and turned into a popular Airbnb. This takes away an important income source for the family, at a time when they are also recovering from Seth recently losing his job this year. Unfortunately, they still owed $30,000 on the purchase of the vintage airstream, and it is not included in insurance coverage.

<div>As soon as they could, the Sullivan-Dawes family along with John, Kay, and Sergey Sullivan and several generously devoted Winthrop staff from Florida made it to Black Mountain to save what they can of their belongings and home. Together, they have been working around the clock without power, water, or much cell communication or supplies, all while helping neighbors and friends where they can as well. The path forward is unclear, but we know that Katharine, Seth, and Bradshaw will not be able to live in their home for 6 months or longer. And it is unclear what will come of the house – whether or not it can be made liveable again or if it will need to be demolished and rebuilt.

<div>As you know, the extended Sullivan family is very tight knit and committed to helping each other. We will make sure the Sullivan-Dawes family has temporary housing in Florida and that all their basic needs are met, of course. Unfortunately though, the Sullivan-Dawes crew are not the only ones in our family who lost their homes in this storm. Three households and a total of 11 family members are currently displaced. My aunt Mary (Kay’s sister) lost her home in Florida and my cousin Christen (Mary’s daughter) will be displaced for weeks to months. Currently, Mary and Christen’s 8 family members are all living at my house in Florida.

Hello to all of our Hard Time Cafe extended family members and loyal guests. As you know, many people are struggling during this tough time while the restaurant industry is on hold due to the COVID 19 pandemic.  Lead by Ned Parker, the son of founder Fred Parker, a few of the Hard Times family members have organized this fundraiser to assist kitchen staff.  Several of our back of the house staff members have a spouse / children and are often the sole income earner, often working at multiple restaurants to support their families. Prince is an immigrant from the Central African Republic who has been living in the U.S. since he was a teenager. And he needs your help now. <br /><br />Last Thursday, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained Prince and, unless he can quickly pay attorney’s fees to reopen his asylum case, he will be deported away from his U.S. citizen wife, home, and life and career as an artist.<br /><br />I met Prince in 2017 after he had been freed from an immigration jail in Maryland in 2015. Ironically, director Oliver Butler and I were interviewing Prince for a theater piece we hoped to create out of the voices of immigrants who have spent time in our nation’s draconian immigration detention system. As a result of his incarceration, Prince had lost his business and been forced to grieve his parents’ death behind bars, but he was rebuilding his life and career as an artist.<br /><br />Prince told me and Oliver a lot about his life in the U.S. and his passion for his art, but he was reluctant to talk about his difficult past. Prince’s father was a diplomat who brought him to the U.S. when he was a young teen, but as war and violence took over the C.A.R., Prince’s father feared the government would harm him and applied for asylum in the U.S. The asylum claim was denied and, as a result, young Prince was ordered deported, although he didn’t know this at the time. Shortly after the asylum denial, uniformed officials in the C.A.R. brutally attacked Prince’s mother and she died of resulting injuries. <br /><br />Heartbroken and fearing imminent return to the C.A.R., Prince’s father died shortly after his asylum claim was denied. Still suffering from the loss of his parents, Prince was picked up by ICE and held for six months in a remote jail far from Shaniece and his support system. Fortunately for Prince, he was released under the Obama administration’s policies.<br /><br />Prince is now 26. He and Shaniece live in Maryland with their cat. Prince’s favorite musician is Jay-Z, he loves Chipotle, and loves watching nature and history documentaries. Prince and Shaniece have been waiting for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) to determine that his marriage to his wife Shaniece is “bona fide.” They have been together for over seven years; she was his high school sweetheart and prom date and is the love of his life. As a U.S. citizen, Shaniece hopes that Prince can stay in the U.S. with her and, last year, started the process to get him a green card.<br /><br />The cost: Prince and Shaniece are devastated by their separation. Prince and Shaniece have already rebuilt their relationship and lives once after immigration detention and know that doing so a second time will demand high financial and emotional costs. <br /><br />Prince has found an attorney to represent him in reopening his asylum case, seeking bond, and pursuing his green card, but it will cost at least $7,500. Prince and Shaniece urgently need half that cost just to get the case started. Prince hopes to secure release on bond, but it will almost certainly be set in the thousands of dollars. <br /><br />At a time when our nation’s immigration police is unleashing a systemic policy of cruelty, I hope you will join me in reuniting this one family and creating a bright future for these high school sweethearts.
