</div>Help Fund Groundbreaking Cortisol &amp; Mental Health Research <br /><br />I’m studying something no one else has tested yet:
Can your body learn to sweat out stress hormones like cortisol?
<br />This project is based on an idea:<br />Cortisol excretion through sweat might be a learned neural response—formed through early life stress or repeated adult stress—where the brain rewires itself to use sweat as a hormonal release valve.
<br />This is not just about “stress makes you sweat.” <br />This is about how the HPA axis (the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal system that controls your stress hormones) may create new neuroendocrine pathways in the body that shift cortisol clearance into your sweat glands.
<br />This might explain:
<br />Why some people sweat uncontrollably when anxious. 
<br />Why others wake up in buckets of sweat at night. 
<br />Why cortisol sticks around longer in some people, worsening symptoms of depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar disorder, panic, and autism—all conditions where HPA axis dysregulation plays a major role. 
<br /><br />I’m using ELISA (enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay) kits to measure cortisol in sweat from a wide population—some athletes, some not—to see if the body’s ability to excrete cortisol through sweat depends more on life history and fitness level. This includes early stress, trauma, physical activity habits, and experiences like stress sweating, panic sweats, and night sweats. My goal isn’t to compare athletes vs. non-athletes, but to uncover a neural signature for how the body learns to regulate cortisol in unique ways.<br /><br />If we prove this theory, it could change how we:<br /><br />Diagnose chronic stress in a non-invasive way (no needles, no blood).<br /><br />Create biofeedback therapies to retrain the body’s hormone regulation.<br /><br />Better understand the biological roots of emotional overwhelm, burnout, and stress disorders.<br /><br />This is my thesis work—but it’s also a deeply personal mission. I’ve lived through the symptoms I’m studying. And I’m crowdfunding this because there is no existing grant for a study like this. It’s never been done.

Sweat, Science, and Healing: A New Frontier in Mental Health

<div>A friend reached out to me recently asking for advice on how to help their estranged mother Angela, a disabled woman in her 60s now on the run from her husband whose threats to kill her have reached a crisis point.  <em>For her safety, we can’t show any images of her or use her real name as this may help him find her.  </em>

<div>Last month, Angela was finally able to run away from her abusive husband and has been living in hiding waiting for space to open up in a shelter in her area.  Unfortunately, all the shelters are full and so she has been sleeping rough, something very hard for a woman of her age and with her current medical issues.  She needs financial support for legal fees and to help tide her over until community services become available in her area.

<div>Angela’s husband (we’ll call him Stan) has been abusive for most of their marriage, and it cost Angela everything. Initially, he seemed like a knight in shining armor.  Her first marriage was one marked by violence directed at both of them, and it was fear for the safety of herself and her young child that drove her to finally leave him.  Stan seemed like a godsend.  He had a steady job, he was nice to them both, and he was willing to offer care, support, love to a young single mother desperate for love and security and to welcome her child along with her.  Things were great for a while; Stan took charge of everything and suddenly Angela didn’t have to live in fear or worry about anything because Stan would take care of it.  He accepted her, her past, and her mental health struggles, but underneath a carefully constructed veneer of loving support lurked a hideous monster.

<div>Stan was using Angela’s PTSD and her mental health issues as a means of control.  Here he had the perfect victims, a woman who struggled to care for herself, someone constantly fighting mental illness that challenged her ability to cope with reality, someone who had no idea what a healthy, loving relationship looked like, and someone who came with a young daughter who was too young to fight him off when he came for her in the night.  Angela’s daughter was able to escape that home, but Angela couldn’t.  Stan controlled her medication, her finances, the tiniest details of her everyday life, and to her shattered sense of self-worth, he didn’t beat her, he provided for her, and her daughter was at least out of that house, even if it came at the cost of their relationship.  This continued on for years, until things started to change.  Angela’s health started getting worse and she developed disabilities that we can’t list here as they would identify her.  Suddenly Stan started refusing to take her to her medical appointments and refilling her prescriptions, and as both her mental and physical health declined, this started getting worse.  He became verbally abusive, constantly berating her, which eventually started escalating until Stand began threatening to kill her and she started fearing for her life again.  Later conversations have revealed how insidious his prolonged treatment of her was behind closed doors, something I’m not sure she’s fully come to terms with yet.

<div>Finally, Angela had the moment of lucidity she so desperately needed.  She started secretly moving treasured possessions out of the home while Stan was at work, hiding them away in a place where he couldn’t find them.  She also started trying to save whatever money she could to build up an emergency fund so that she could run away.  And then it happened, and Stan snapped.  It was in that moment that Angela realized that this was her last chance, if she didn’t leave then on her own two feet the only way she’d make it out was in a body bag.  The next day while Stan was at work she was able to make her escape.  Unfortunately, there was no shelter space available in her county and so Angela has been living rough, waiting for space to open up.

<div>Not knowing how long her tenuous grasp of freedom could last, Angela reached out to her estranged child to let them know she had finally left and to try and have some kind of a relationship.  And this bring us to where Angela is now: disabled, homeless, on the run from her abusive husband, in need of medical care, and needing to file for divorce so she can sever all ties with him.  She has reached out to all the available social support services in her area, but the system is overwhelmed and there currently isn’t a lot available for her in her county.

<div>After working through the finer details, Angela needs at least $3,000 to get the legal support she needs, to pay the fees for her storage rental, help her relocate to a safer area far away from him, to find and put down deposits for more stable housing, and to help her out with medical care and support since she no longer has access to insurance.  This money will also be used for sundry items like food and public transportation since she legally can’t drive right now.  All of these are time-sensitive and especially complicated considering her age and circumstances.

Help Angela Escape Abuse and Find Safety

Hello beloved community, <br /><br />Our friend Yasmine has been through a harrowing time in this transition to the new year. They have come out the other end of an incredibly painful, frightening and relentless illness that started with flu and fever, intensified to pnuemonia, and eventually led to a gall bladder infection. Thankfully Yasmine was able to leave the hospital without needing surgery, and they were able to transition gently back to their apartment with help from close friends and family. <br /><br />Now we are reaching to our wider network of friends and community to help with the next part— recovery. Yasmine is still building back their strength, their lung capacity, their gut biome, and much more. They are not able to pay their medical expenses on their own, and being away from work for so long has created more financial hardship. Isabella was first diagnosed with leukemia back in Houston, Tx when she was 2 yrs old and underwent treatment for 4 yrs. She beat cancer and was in remission when we lost everything we had in the hurricane. 
We relocated for a fresh start in San Jose, CA 3 months ago and on a routine checkup found out that she has cancer again, this time with a 60% chance of beating it. We have been here living at the hospital with her but have run out of funds to keep our other children in motels ($120+/night) so we have been sleeping in car in garage parking lot. We have no funds coming in until end of the month. Bella is on a new type of chemo called blinatumomab which has to be administered 24/7 through a Hickman which is basically an i.v implanted in her chest directly to her heart. She will have a backpack holding it 24/7 and will have to go to the hospital every couple days to swap the bag out. Therefore we are required to stay nearby hospital which being next to Stanford is very expensive. 
Isabella will be receiving a bone marrow treatment in March and as long as her body doesn't reject it should beat this again. She wants this to be over so bad. She's only 6 years old and to hear her say she's tired of fighting cancer that she just wants to be normal breaks our hearts so bad. She's such a sweet happy girl.
We have no family or friends out here either so no help with other kids. 1 of us stays with bella and due to hospital policy other kids can't sleep here so they are with husband most the time preventing him from being able to work more hours being stuck in the car.  We need to get on our feet and with no foundation to start on especially here in Palo Alto, CA where we have to stay to be near the children's cancer center due to Bellas new meds she is getting through her Hickman  having to be changed out every couple days. It seems impossible.

Bella is supposed to be getting a bone marrow transplant here within this next month. However due to our current living situation they will not sign off on the approval until we are more stable for her. If she misses this opportunity it can lower her chances of survival. There is already less than a 60% chance of her surviving. Please if you can just anything helps. We are literally begging for help. She is a good kid and deserves to live her life. Please. We are truly thankful to anyone who helps. Anything helps cause like I said we lost everything.
