<div>At the start of the new year, January 2025 a special group of folks are making our way down to Ucayali region of Peru to make a traditional plant dieta with a Master Curendero (Healing Artist), <a href="https://centromunay.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Don José Campos</a>. During a dieta an individual courts a Master Plant Teacher and becomes a student to the wisdom of the Plants. It takes courageous discipline and heartfelt devotion to learn in this way.

<div>This particular journey is extra-ordinary. This group is majority BIPOC and female bodied - very rare down in the jungle! To experience the camaraderie that diversity offers while endeavoring the warriorship that a dieta requires is a true gift. Our hope and expectation is that this group create a ripple of benefit to touch places of relationality in the web of life that are in deep need now - and are not situated close to intersections held by the predominantly white male population in a typical jungle dieta experience.

<div>Honeybee Courtney and Tossie Long met several years ago in a medicine circle, and in that short time, their connection has blossomed into a powerful bond. From the very beginning, they shared a vision of traveling to the jungle together - a vision rooted in their shared commitment to personal growth, healing, and mastery of their medicine work. Now, that opportunity has finally arrived. Both dedicated medicine workers, Honeybee Courtney and Tossie are embarking on a journey to work alongside master teachers in the heart of the jungle, where they will refine their skills and expand their knowledge. This collaboration marks a significant step in their paths, but they cannot do it alone—they need your help.

<div>Generational San Franciscan Tossie Long (she/her) is a multi-hyphenate, multi-lingual Grammy nominated vocalist, international performing artist, producer, director, composer and ritualist who speaks to the intersections of sound, culture and sociopolitical edges spanning from rock and roll vocals to Afrofuturistic psycho-spiritual immersive experiences. Nicknamed "Bone Rattler '' Tossie is a practitioner of ceremonial music from around the world with a focus on diasporic cosmology. An ethnomusicologist; Tossie has voyaged to Ayiti, Cuba, Benin, Nigeria, Brazil and New Orleans tracing the migration of Vodou for an embodied devotion to music in its cultural contexts. Tossie is currently working on Red Clay Sound Haus (RCSH) an immersive sound-centric project with 4 thematic directives, Land Love Labor Legacy which explores Black sound; body, architecture and desire. As well as Sound Haus Excursions; exclusive experiences for ritualistic living. Tossie does not perform for the sake of performing, but rather to challenge and to experiment with how far she can push her perceived limits.

<div>Honeybee Courtney's journey toward healing began with her family in the kitchen where she discovered that food is far more than sustenance—it’s a vehicle for connection, love, and joy. Her parents instilled in her a deep appreciation for healing from a young age because she witnessed their transformational work firsthand. Honeybee saw how these practices could transform lives, and she was drawn to follow in their footsteps. Honeybee currently works as a ceremony retreat chef as well as a healing soundscape artist, tarot card divinator, and last but not least an integration and manifestation consultant. She recognizes the powerful synergy between nourishing the body, mind, and spirit. Today, Honeybee weaves together these holistic practices to help individuals heal not only through food but also through spiritual modalities. Her mission is to create a beautiful world where hearts and spirits are free and full of life.

Empower Black Women in Medicine: Tossie and Honeybee

<div>Hello, I am Regent (Queen) and I am once again faced with the impacts of income insecurity and medical needs. After beating cancer in 2022-23; a recent mammogram of my left breast showed "abnormal" cells, which may be a precursor to breast cancer. In order to be sure, I must have surgery to remove more tissue to determine if cancer is present and remove the "abnormal" tissue. I also have a non-cancerous cyst that needs to be surgically removed in my right breast. As this news comes right after being laid-off from my position at Spirit Rock, I find myself slightly overwhelmed, yet very confident I will beat this again.
</div>
<div>I am reaching out for support from my community, my village. One of the lessons I learned through beating cancer previously, is that I cannot and should not do this alone- my community has always been the medicine I need to thrive.
</div>

<div>Essential Food and Medicine (EFAM) transforms food waste into nourishment, trauma into leadership, and disconnection into healing through our HDRSS Program: Wellness, Direct Services, Recovery, Ecology, and Self-Determination.

<div>EFAM is a project of <a href="https://www.esphera.earth/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Esphera</a>, which creates liberation through restoring ecosystems, regenerating communities, storytelling and remembering our divinity.

<div>We distribute food surplus and natural medicines to unhoused, formerly incarcerated, and indigenous communities to regenerate people and land.

<div>First and foremost we want to thank everyone who has been a part of our work. From the very first juice that we made out of our home kitchen 3 1/2 yrs ago, to the thousands of pounds of produce we transformed and diverted from landfills and waste streams, to holistic health classes for Oakland’s front line communities, to putting our bodies on the line to defend the houseless from eviction, to each drop of herbal Medicine that made it into the bodies of those that needed it most… we thank each hand, prayer, and action taken together for our collective liberation.

<div>EFAM was born 3 yrs ago April 2020 at the beginning of the Pandemic. The health &amp; well being of some of the most vulnerable members of our local and global community was at the crux point of the crises. We know that solutions to the systemic root causes of illness require a holistic approach that includes mind, body, spirit, and the earth itself.

<div>Community is medicine. As mutual aid networks strengthened, EFAM volunteers produced healthy juices, smoothies, and natural medicines for our unhoused and formerly incarcerated community in West Oakland, redirecting fresh produce, herbs, and meals from our local gardens, farms, and food businesses that were destined for waste streams.
</div>

<div>Our medicine making operation, The Herbal Resilience Collective, created an Herbal CSA from locally grown and wild harvested herbs.
</div>

<div>Our work has spawned different projects such as Foodz, a mutual aid food network in Oakland, and Cob on Wood.

<div>Cob on Wood, was an eco-village of community support structures built for our Wood Street houseless relatives. It was located at what was possibly the largest encampment of houseless people on the west coast. At its height, COW boasted a community kitchen, hot shower, compost toilet, pop up clinic, free store, earthen oven, fire pit, stage and community garden. EFAM worked hand in hand with unhoused residents, countless volunteers, &amp; Sister organizations like Artists Building Communities and Living Earth Structures among others to shape and caretake what was a vital community resource until it was demolished by Caltrans earlier this year.

<div>The process of eviction from wood street was long and the state violence was extreme. Through all of it, EFAM worked to bring an element of the sacred into the process and elevate the voices and leadership of residents. This included supporting a resident led bike ride to Sacramento to lobby lawmakers and build power with other unhoused communities across the state.
</div>

<div>Another achievement was our 11 week Nutrition &amp; Healing Arts Class for our unhoused relatives. We explored culinary arts, traditional ancestral healing practices, had a rockstar team of guest presenters and supported participants on their personal healing journeys.

<div>Our work is creative. Not only did we collaborate with Primordia and Kin DAO to create NFT’s and digital wallets for unhoused folks and relatives at the Rosebud reservation, we also hosted educational screenings such as Dope is Death and offered NADA ear acupuncture to assist with trauma, detox and addiction.
</div>

<div>Though West Oakland is our base, our work has expanded to Lakota Country on the Rosebud Reservation and the Yawanawa territories of Amazon Jungle in Acre, Brazil.

<div>At Rosebud in South Dakota we curated an EarthDay gathering called Uncila Makoce. At this Food Sovereignty summit tribal leaders were able to share traditional recipes, language, and discuss challenges the community faces to their health and wellbeing. We explored solutions that dreamt beyond the effects of colonization, healed, and built community.

Esphera Highlight: Essential Food & Medicine (EFAM)

<p>My Peanut puppy has said goodbye to this world and grieving him has been a process. He was in and out of the hospital for a few weeks with kidney failure, a leaking heart valve and fluid in his abdomen.
</p>

<p>I haven’t worked since 3/14 and unemployment definitely helps but will come to an end soon. His emergency hospital visits, rechecks and cremation totaled $6000.
</p>

<p>Anyone who knows me knows that he was my baby and my life. I did everything I could do to give him the best quality of life and keep him around as long as I could cause he was my ride or die. In his last few weeks of life he could barely walk and he stopped eating and was basically a whisper of his spunky self. 
</p>

Goodbye Dreamboy

After over a decade working in the educational nonprofit sector, <strong>I'm looking to move into coaching and talent development with a specific focus on supporting current and emerging leaders working toward social justice and systemic equity</strong>. I have done work in talent development as a manager and facilitator in the nonprofit sector, but I am taking this next step to become a certified coach to deepen my learning and build my readiness to more fully step into a career in coaching.<br /><br />I'll be participating in the <a href="http://www.leadershipthatworks.com/public/courses/index.cfm?semID=6710&amp;view=1">Coaching for Transformation (CFT) program through Leadership that Works from June 2019-March 2020 in Oakland, CA</a> . This program prepares coaches to take a holistic approach that considers the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual development and well being of coaching clients. It also takes a culturally responsive lens and seeks to address issues of power, privilege, and identity as important elements of leadership development.<strong> Coaches from the CFT program are working to build capacity in nonprofit organizations, social justice movements, and communities around the world.</strong> For all of these reasons, I am excited to participate in a program that aligns with my own values and hopes for the future.<br /><br /><strong>$8495</strong> covers tuition, mentoring, books, assessment, learning community and resources for the program<br /><strong>$1500</strong> covers the cost of working with a CFT certified coach as part of the program (a required component of the program that must be paid directly to the coach, separate from program tuition)<br /><br /><strong>The cost of $8495 must be paid by the start of the program on June 8th</strong>. The remaining $1500 will be paid directly to the CFT certified coach after the program begins.<br /><br />I am deeply appreciative of any support my community is able to provide toward this new endeavor! This is a step and a program I've been interested in for awhile, but the cost has been a significant barrier for me. Folks that know me well know I am often reluctant to ask for help (and I'm working on that), and that has limited me from pursuing my goals and interests in the past. <strong>I am putting this request out there humbly and with gratitude for contributions of any amount that you are able to make.</strong> It truly all makes a difference and provides encouragement for me to continue on this path.
