My mum is suffering from AL amyloidosis ( A rare form of Blood Cancer ) at stage 3 and has been told she likely has less than a year left with us. Watching someone you love decline like this is heartbreaking, and right now our biggest wish is simply to make her remaining time as comfortable and dignified as possible.
At the moment, Mum is confined to a hospital bed in our living room. She can’t manage the stairs, and without a stairlift she has no way of getting to her own bedroom. The bed downstairs may as well be a prison bed - she’s isolated, gets very little sleep, and barely has the energy to move herself. She’s essentially stuck in the lounge all day and night.
We’ve tried to get help through grants, but we’ve been told the wait time is around 12 months. Tragically, Mum doesn’t have that long. A stairlift would allow her to sleep in her own bed, have privacy, rest properly, and feel like herself again - something so basic, yet completely out of reach for us financially. Stairlifts are specialised equipment and, sadly, extremely expensive in the UK. A standard straight stairlift might cost around £2,000 - £5,500, and we believe we may need a custom curved solution, and prices for what we need are typically £4,000-£10,000+ - far beyond what our family can afford. We’re trying to raise enough to get Mum safely and comfortably back upstairs as soon as possible.
She hasn’t been able to work for over a year due to her illness. My dad is the main provider, but he’s had to take a huge amount of time off work to care for her. Me and my Brother are doing everything we can to help pay, but there’s only so much we can contribute.
Every donation, share, or kind word helps more than we can express.
My Mum is truly an angel. She’s the most loving, kind-hearted person you could ever meet, and she’s never had an easy life. Seeing her suffer like this is unbearable. All we want is to give her peace, comfort, and dignity in her final days.
Me, my younger Brother, and my Dad can't bear to see her living so uncomfortably in her final days. Everyone knows Cancer is a nasty disease, but I never knew it could be this difficult to navigate.
Thank you so, so much for reading, for caring, and for helping us give our mum the comfort she deserves.
