<div>There are so many devastating losses in Western NC right now, it is hard to wrap our heads around it and know where to start to help. Our community faces a long uphill road to recovery, and there are so many people who need assistance. Part of what makes this community so vibrant and wonderful are the small businesses that provide us with unique and fun places to come together. And if you know Brandon and Davie, you know how much of their heart and soul went into creating their bar and coffee shop, DayTrip which just opened a little over a month ago. They spent countless months and so much blood, sweat and tears renovating the space and realizing their dream of creating a cozy and quirky place for friends and neighbors to come and feel welcome. And it was that place for a sweet brief time. But when Hurricane Helene hit Western N.C., DayTrip, along with so many other small businesses along the French Broad, was completely destroyed. As everyone is trying to navigate through the slow process of insurance claims, the bills are still coming due, and the employees have no income until they rebuild. Brandon and Davie used their life savings and took out a large business loan to get this dream of theirs started. In all, they put over $180,000 into this business and are now facing the daunting task of rebuilding from the ground up. They need to pay their business loans and other bills and, in typical Brandon and Davie fashion, their first concern was their employees. They really want to be able to provide their employees with some assistance during this extremely difficult time.

The film explores essential facets of the Asian-American experience: migration, assimilation, intergenerational scars, as well as the importance of preserving personal narratives. Lola is an attempt to uncover and reconstruct my family’s story while analyzing and reflecting on how these experiences have inherently shaped my life.

Lola (Grandmother) Documentary Fundraiser

<div>My dearest friend, our treasured colleague, most devoted teacher and brilliant artist, Jean Marie Casbarian, has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML). We, her family, friends, colleagues and students, are asking you to help us raise $110,000. Funds are needed to cover the cost of medicine, special transportation to and from Memorial Sloan Kettering, living expenses, including rent, utility bills, food, caregivers, and any other unforeseen expenses that may arise over the next 5 years.

<div>Just as Spring was beginning to unfold, Jean Marie’s primary care doctor noticed some anomalies in several routine blood tests. After consultations with her hematologist, a bone marrow biopsy, and further specialized testing with a Leukemia specialist at Weill Cornell in New York City, she was diagnosed in late August with Acute Myeloid Leukemia and told she needed to begin treatment immediately. Without treatment, her prognosis is dire.

<div>Jean Marie began treatment at Weill Cornell on Thursday, September 1st. She will undergo extensive chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant at Memorial Sloan Kettering on March 17, 2023, leaving her hospitalized for at least one month and under 24/7 care for a minimum of 100 days. This procedure will leave her severely immunocompromised and physically depleted.

<div>This news was received at the very moment she was preparing to move to Northampton, Massachusetts, for her Visiting Professorship at Hampshire College. However, her doctor strongly recommended that she remain in Jackson Heights, NY, because her health very much depends on her community (us) carrying and supporting her through this critical phase of her life.

<div>She is heartbroken to miss the opportunity to be teaching at Hampshire. Losing a large part of her income is devastating, and she needs help to maintain financial stability.

<div>On March 19, I was shooting at a venue with an event in the space to follow. I was told by the building's manager that I could lock my equipment in his office and that he had the only key. Twenty minutes after I secured my equipment, the building manager brought a complete stranger into the office and let him walk off with my camera and all my lenses. After the event, when I realized my equipment was gone, the building manager took the blame, citing ignorance, and shared the CCTV footage of the theft with the police on the scene. However, a few weeks later, the building decided not to cooperate and help me recover my losses.

<div>This is now a legal matter which will take much time to resolve. In the meantime, I have bills stacking up and jobs I'm losing because of the theft, as well as attorney's fees. This has also seriously hampered my ability to recover financially from the Covid shutdown. I'm asking for any help you can give. Help Replace My Stolen Camera Equip & Cover Bills

<span style="color:rgb(127,127,127);">This weekend we discovered that Major had a life threatening disease called Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD) that was causing him severe pain and would take his motor skills, mental capacity, and eventually his life if it wasn't addressed quickly. <br /><br />It was a very tough weekend trying to understand what was causing my baby to have these fits of pain and to act as quickly as possible. Because he cares so much about making me happy, he hid his as long as he could until it became unbearable. <br /><br />After a weekend of escalating symptoms and we were able to get him an MRI that confirmed our fear that IVDD was the culprit for his quickly deteriorating functions and he was rushed into spinal surgery. <br /><br />I went into the hospital last night after his surgery was complete and was told by the doctors that he is a strong boy and already able to be taken off anesthesia and oxygen support because he has such a strong fight in him. <br /><br />This morning they let me know that he is showing some movement in his hind legs which is a very good sign and is "being sweet" to all the doctors and nurses which is also a great sign for his mental function. <br /><br />I can't see him yet in the ICU for fear of it being too exciting for him too early but I'm getting regular updates and will be getting pictures of him soon. <br /><br />Unfortunately, this life saving surgery and amazing care come at a hefty cost that I currently can't afford. I'm setting up a GoFundMe to ask for help paying off Major's surgery so that hopefully we can move forward from this moment. <br /><br />I appreciate any amount you can give, big or small. <b>In the early hours of July 11, 2021, the world changed in an instant.</b> Josh Dowd—a spirit so bright, kind, and full of life that he left a mark on everyone he met—was found brutally assaulted and left for dead on the railroad tracks in Atlanta.<br /><br />The initial medical reports were devastating. Doctors classified his condition as a GCS3 coma—the deepest level of unconsciousness. We were told to prepare for the worst: that Josh would likely never wake up, or if he did, would remain in a persistent vegetative state. We were told to say goodbye.<br /><br /><b>But Josh had other plans.<br /></b><br />What happened next was not just a recovery; it was a defiance of the odds. In those critical first six months, while the world watched and prayed, Josh fought for every inch of ground:

</ul><span><br /><b>The New Battle: The Cost of Breaking Through</b><br /><br />Today, the "crisis" phase of saving Josh's life is over, but the fight for his quality of life has entered a more complex financial chapter.

While Josh still has high quality health insurance, the medical system has limits. Insurance covers the "standard of care"—the basics to keep him stable. But we know Josh is capable of more than just "stable."<br /><br />To truly recover what was stolen from him, Josh needs access to cutting-edge neuro-cognitive therapies and innovative rehabilitation techniques. This page has been set up by his friends in memory of Jason H. Jackson, known to all of us as "Big Hus",  who has passed away due to a tragic accident on January 26, 2019. Jason was funny, always full of energy, and he loved his children.<br />Jason is survived by his four children Jason Jr. (his first),  Jada (his second child), Jaymier (his third) and daughter Jayonna (his baby).  In lieu of this tragedy, we are asking for donations to help provide as much financial support to his Mother and children as possible. One of the sweetest men that I’ve ever met, the love of my brother’s life, the son of two amazing parents, the brother of 4 incredible siblings, the uncle of 10 nieces and newphews, the brother in law that my sister and I have always wanted, the son-in-law that my parents loved dearly - this was Landen and he has tragically passed away.  There are no true words to describe what type of person that he was. He unfortunately passed away because he wanted to stop and help someone else. Landen had the most beautiful soul. Puck’s Vet Bills

On Saturday, May 6, 2017, 42-year-old Jacek (“yaht-zek”) Chmielowiec, my dear friend and co-worker, was on his way for a run through his local park in Queens, NY. You see, several years earlier, his wife, Natalia, had given birth to a precious little girl, Emma, and the arrival of this magical child opened Jacek’s eyes to some of the ways in which he had unwittingly taken to living—working long hours, eating for convenience over health, and not getting regular exercise save running up and down subway stairs. It was shortly thereafter that Jacek took up running as part of a new commitment to get and stay healthy, as he’d declared to me proudly one day at work, “<strong>I know I’m only 37</strong>,<strong> but I want to be there when Emma graduates. I want to walk her down the aisle someday</strong>."<br /><br /> And with that declaration, Jacek's priorities shifted seemingly overnight. His daughter and wife (and now his small son, Oliver), became his priorities and the very reasons for which he would begin taking better care of himself. <strong>Little did he know that his comment</strong>—<strong>made half in jest</strong>—<strong>would hold the significance that it did</strong>.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/22849362_1502728051.2643_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><em>Jacek and his little angel, Emma</em><br /><br />So, on that particular Saturday back in May, as Jacek headed for a run, he had no idea that he was about to go into cardiac arrest before making it to the park and that no one would perform resuscitative measures on him for at least 10 minutes (possibly more). He had no idea that his brain would be deprived of oxygen (<strong>anoxia</strong>) for at least 10 minutes (possibly more) and that he would be literally <strong>dropping open the jaw of every EMT on the scene</strong> who’d presumed that the tragedy unfolding before them—just like every other one with the same circumstances—would likely end tragically as well.<br /><br /><em>The EMTs were wrong.</em><br /><br />Even though <strong>doctors initially had told Jacek's family that he would never talk or move again</strong>, a month-long medically induced coma helped stablize his body and commence brain healing, and he became "healthy" enough to be moved to a brain injury rehabilitation facility in early June. <br /><br />Not surprisingly to any of us who know him (though very surprisingly to most of the rehab staff), Jacek surpassed all expectations in the rehab. He can read headlines and kiss his family and talk in a whisper. <em>And this from someone they'd said would never move again! </em>He is not walking yet, but <strong>he moves his arms and legs</strong> and has finally (thankfully) had the eating tube removed from his stomach, letting him ingest soft foods and liquids orally.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/22849362_1502728301.4587_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><em>Jacek with his wife, Natalia, by his side</em><br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/22849362_1502728333.3976_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><em>Jacek with Natalia and his children Oliver and Emma</em><br /><br />Last month, Jacek was moved from Helen Hayes Hospital in W. Haverford, NY, to a rehab facility closer to home. This was done because Helen Hayes is an acute facility, which permits only short-term stays. The new rehab facility was not the family’s first choice but was the only one that had open beds while satisfying insurance as well as facility restrictions (e.g., no tracheotomies allowed, etc.). <br /><br />Unfortunately, <strong>the actual transport traumatized Jacek</strong> (common among brain injury victims) and set him back a bit. He suffered seizures (which were misdiagnosed); however, there was also a benefit—Jacek was closer to friends and family. <strong>He responds very positively to visitors</strong>, such as his co-workers, whom he recognized and was thrilled to see (during the times he was “present”) while at Helen Hayes.<br /><br /><img class="not-resizable" src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/22849362_1502748233.6404_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><em>Jacek surrounded by his family of co-workers—I'm loving that smile!<br /><br /></em>The goal has been to get Jacek into the New York State Certified Traumatic Brain Injury Rehabilitation Program at the Park Terrace Care Center in Rego Park, the best facility for his particular brain injury. That prayer was answered last week! The downside is that <strong>Park Terrace is out of Jacek’s insurance network</strong>, and<strong> the cost of a single night is $700</strong>—<strong>just for the bed</strong>. His family has had to pay an entire month’s expenses out of pocket just to secure the “last bed,” which wasn't available until that gesture. That makes my blood boil, but that’s okay; we’re where we want to be. <strong>Everyone is grateful</strong> and will take it from there.<br /><br />And that is what I’m doing here, now—trying to “take it from there.” <strong>I know that this is only the tip of the </strong>“<strong>financial burden</strong>”<strong> </strong><strong>iceberg for Jacek and his family.</strong> The long and short of it is that medical funds are dwindling quickly. Personal savings are being tapped into regularly as out-of-pocket expenses are increasing, while delays in insurance claims prevent expenses from being reimbursed in a timely fashion. Then there are construction costs for making his home handicapped accessible in anticipation of his return, however long it may take. I know I’ve likely overlooked some important information to help justify this request in many of your minds, but <strong>please don’t let that stop you from helping</strong> Jacek fully recover, which we know he will do if he receives the proper care, which <strong>we can make happen right here and now</strong>.<br /><br /> “<em>I know I’m only 37, but I want to be there when Emma graduates. I want to walk her down the aisle someday.</em>” That sentiment from several years back is the driving force behind my intention here. <strong>I am determined to see Jacek walk his daughter down the aisle</strong>. He is already beating the odds like nobody’s business, and I know he can do it! <br /><br /><strong>Thank you</strong> for your selfless love and support, and God bless you regardless of your decision.<br /><br /><strong>HOW YOU CAN HELP TODAY</strong><br /><br /><strong>1.</strong> Please <strong>GIVE </strong>what you can. <strong>No donation is too small</strong>. Everyone eligible for deferred action should know their rights and consider an application or renewal ASAP (note: while most in the legal community agree that current dreamers should renew their protections, experts disagree whether eligible dreamers who haven't yet applied should risk coming forward now for the first time, given "changing winds" in Washington). <br /><br />We hope to raise enough money to help 1,000 dreamers renew or apply for deferred action (and then, we hope to challenge funders, policy makers, and others to ensure that every person who is eligible for and wants deferred action is able to apply). Fund for DACA students (vs arrests)

<strong>Sisters make the bad times good and the good times Unforgettable</strong>. That’s the best way to sum up my love for my one and only sister, Sharon. And that’s why I am taking this leap and reaching out to my dear friends and family and asking for support during a difficult time that she and her immediate family are currently going through. I have posted some recent events over the last few months with limited information pertaining to my sister,  and today I’d like to elaborate a little so you have more insight to the challenges that she has faced and those she continues to be up against. <br /><br /><strong>For those that know Sharon, know that she and I are really just 2 different flowers from the same garden.</strong> She’s beautiful, thoughtful, compassionate, friendly and carries a constant, contagious smile. Some say we get that from Dad! For those that don’t know her, you’re really missing out! <br /><br /><strong>14 years ago, after years of struggling with her weight, Sharon engaged in a very invasive bariatric weight loss surgery called the Biliopancreatic diversion with Duodenal Switch, also known as Gastric Reduction</strong>. This surgery is composed of a restrictive and malabsorptive aspect. 14 years ago, pre and post treatment was not performed as it is today in Bariatric medicine, therefore she was advised to increase vitamin supplements for life and carry on. She has spent the last 14 year monitoring her body, but over time, the supplements were not able to keep up with her loss. <br /><br /><strong>Within the last year and a half she has had unexplained, continual changes to her body and health.</strong>  After multiple tests, physicians and racking health bills, the conclusion was that this is just how it is, “maybe you have Fibromyalgia”, and “eat more protein”.  We attended a concert on August 31st 2016 at the Sprint Center and that was the last time Sharon was confidently on her feet and feeling well. Soon following, Sharon begun falling, blacking out, losing weight, and in time got to a point where she could barely eat due to increased swelling and pain in her mouth and throat. Her hair begun thinning as her body developed severe Edema. Between November and late December, atrophy set in and she had become immobile. After a few runs to the ER and recommendations that didn’t seem to help in addition to lack of physician care, we took her to KU Hospital on January 6th. It was there she as advised that she was “knocking on Heaven’s Door” and they admitted her. During that week, every possible test, scan and poke occurred. Tests revealed strong organs, considering the toll her body was taking. Unfortunately, after multiple blood tests, it was discovered that she was missing something called “Trace Minerals” which are required in order for nutrients and vitamins to cling to. They compared her and her levels to that of an Ethiopian and advised that this is not common in America. Her Protein levels were the lowest they had ever seen. <br /><br /><strong>After a week of care and tests, she was transferred to a wonderful Rehabilitation Hospital in Overland Park, KS. It was there that her life begun to turn around.</strong> She was immediately introduced to Dr. Saradih who ordered that she be fed intravenously with what is referred to TPN. His opinion is that Sharon was never going to get better by oral feeding due to the malabsoption issue.  With daily hours of therapy, feedings and movement, she was able to increase her energy, healing on the inside and out, and regained mobility! She was released last week to home where she continues to administer her own 14 hour TPN treatment, a $300 a day prescription, and engage in Home Health therapy and nursing.  At this time, the only cure for Sharon, is surgical reversal. She is in the midst of seeing a Bariatric Surgeon at Shawnee Mission who will discuss this procedure and the hope that the reversal will allow her body to begin absorbing nutrients again. <br /><br /><strong>With hope in our hearts and a future of good health anticipated, Sharon and Chad were hit yesterday with a very large stumbling block.</strong>  Sharon is a stay at home wife and mother, and Chad the provider for their family.  Chad has a loyal and devoted heart for his wife, children and employer. Over the last several months, Chad was hit with an increase of responsibility. It was him in charge of Sunny, school, chores, food, pets and his job.  He was able to keep everything in check providing for all to his best of abilities.  Yesterday was a day that should have been filled with further hope.  But unfortunately, Chad was on the road performing his job when he was called back to the company office. He was advised that he was “being let go” with no reason provided. He didn’t argue or object and simply turned over his vehicle, computer and company cell phone. Also included in that turnover was their family insurance. The one crucial piece needed at this time in their life. <br /><br /><strong>So effective tomorrow, February, 1st, my sister is without health insurance needed to cover her current medical situation.</strong> We are so close to getting her well again. Without an income, Cobra Insurance will be very expensive for them, but so needed to get her through her final medical journey to health. Sharon's health is critical at this point . <strong>Without the TPN and reversal surgery, life expectancy may not be very long. </strong><br />  I am reaching out, as persuaded by so many great people that are in my circle of life, to those that would like to contribute in helping them secure their health insurance until she is recovered. Any donation is an appreciated and worthy donation.  I just want to do what I can, in any way I can, to help out my sister. She wouldn’t do any less for me.
