<div>Asher’s apartment burned down on Wednesday, January 8, 2025, in the Eaton Fire in Altadena, California. He evacuated with very little time to pack while the fire spread quickly through his neighborhood. As with so many others, Asher’s home is totally gone, and almost all of his belongings have been lost.

<div><strong>We are humbly seeking support for the cancer treatment of our dear friend, Indigenous leader and activist Maria Magdalena. </strong>
</div>

<div>Maria Magdalena “Elena” Alvarado Ixpata is a beloved Maya Achi elder with great ancestral knowledge and wisdom in language, culture and traditional seed saving. Elena was born on June 28, 1955 in a village called Chiticoy in the municipality of Rabinal, Guatemala. <strong>For decades she has shared her rich cultural knowledge with communities across Guatemala, New Mexico, California and Arizona through her work with Qachuu Aloom Association and The Garden’s Edge. Through her charisma and devotion, she has inspired future generations to plant gardens, and preserve their seeds, cultures and languages.</strong>
</div>

<div>She is a survivor of the Guatemalan civil war (1960-1996) and a two time survivor of cancer. She overcame cervical cancer in 2009 and then she survived breast cancer in 2015.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Five years later, <strong>in 2020, she was diagnosed with Metastatic Carcinoma in her L5 vertebra. </strong>
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Elena is currently confined to a wheelchair and has been hospitalized with complications several times over the past three months where she has received blood and platelet transfusions, antibiotics, chemo, radiation and intravenous feeding.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The ups and downs of her health have caused tremendous emotional and financial hardship and $11,000 of debt for her only child, Samuel, whom she raised as a single mother. <strong>This campaign is to help with her medical treatment and to help her stay as comfortable and pain-free as possible. </strong>
</div>

</div>
<div>After each chemotherapy the costs of treatment have risen due to various complications in her reaction to treatment. Corruption in Guatemala’s public health system contributes to a lack of access to hospitals with equipment and medicine to support patients with even a minor disease much less for a complicated diagnosis like Elena´s. Rampant COVID-19 and lack of vaccines have made the hospitals even more dangerous. For this reason her expenses are higher because she is being treated in a private hospital.

<div>In order to continue with her treatments, the oncologist is requiring two more chemotherapy sessions, ($986.84 each), but before that she must do another full body CT scan and a tumor marker lab test ($855). She is also in desperate need of another platelet transfusion and each one costs $1000. We anticipate at least another $4,000 of future expenses for an MRI, chemo, platelet and blood transfusions and hope to relieve some of Samuel’s $11,000 debt through this campaign. <strong>All funds will go directly to Samuel (Elena’s son) to pay for her medical expenses.</strong>

<div>Spine surgery, with prophylactic fixation at L5 vertebra level, for decompression of the nerve root.

<div>During surgery, a bone biopsy was taken from the pedicle bone of the L5 vertebra and sent to pathology. Upon confirmation of Metastatic CA, treatment is continued with the Oncology Specialist. He ordered several tests, two of the main ones were to rule out that the cancer had not spread to any other organ, full body CT scan, and bone scintigraphy

<div>2020 | In October, the race to win the battle against cancer begins. The initial treatment was 10 sessions of radiation therapy.

<div>2020 | November - 2021 February | Recovery process took place.

<div>2021| March | Severe pain in the lower extremities which required morphine to calm the pain. Treatment continued. In this case the specialist recommended six sessions of chemotherapy. Every 21 days, the cost of each chemotherapy amounts to Q 7,500.00. ($986.84) each.

<div>2021 | June | The consequences of the radiation received in the L5 vertebra began affect her capacity to urinate. She was monitored by a urologist who recommended she start using a foley catheter.

<div>2021 | August | After the fourth chemotherapy, she had to be hospitalized in intensive care for several days, due to a severe infection. She was put on a picc line to administer all the corresponding treatments; Antibiotics, Blood transfusions, Platelet transfusions, Feeding, Respiratory therapy, Serums, etc.

Hello everyone, below is the explanation of why we originally started this GoFundMe but unfortunately now, my mother has passed, she passed on her birthday February 10th 2021 at 2:28pm, thank you for all your support and love, my mother was the most incredible woman, and now her suffering has ended and that bring us great relief, but we will forever be heartbroken and grieving for her love, her presence, and her touch. <br /><br />Hello everyone, we are fundraising for my mother, Julie deKoning, she was diagnosed with terminal stage 4 colorectal cancer in 2016 and has been struggling with treatments including chemotherapy, radiation, and surgical procedures for the past 4 years. Recently our humble family begun incurring more and more troublesome and burdening expenses, and would greatly appreciate your help weathering the storm of financing my mothers treatments and care for her terminal illness. This is especially difficult on our family because we have to go through this harrowing experience during the isolation and constant fear of a global pandemic. The pandemic and Covid-19 have forced us to expend much more of our family’s funds on things like proper cleaning and sanitizing supplies, as well as Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) for our family and nursing staff coming into our home, in addition to all her treatments, medical care, and elder care equipment like wheel chairs, body lifts, safety rails, ramps, elderly/disabled patient caregiver alert systems, elder bathing equipment, physical therapy equipment, etc., and the list of necessary expenses goes on and on, also including lawyer and legal fees for end-of-life legal and financial documents and final arrangements. Any and all donations are deeply appreciated. My mother touched so many people throughout her lifetime with the meaningful work she dedicated herself to. She was the Administrator and Admissions Director at Pacific Oaks Children’s School for 40 years. Pacific Oaks was and is a school incredibly passionate and dedicated to social justice, child-centered play-based learning, and the celebration of difference and diversity, not merely the toleration of it. These are all morals, beliefs, ethos, and principles my mother embodies, and has diligently worked her entire life to advocate for. I grew up at Pacific Oaks with my mother and so did my sisters. In the early 70s my mother started working there as a cleaning lady, and with no degrees or formal training she rose to become the highest level administrator at the Pacific Oaks Children’s School. She loved that place, the people, and what it stood for, and she felt like her life had meaningful honorable purpose working for an organization that uplifted young children by giving them the social emotional and social justice tools to be conscious, critically aware, just, forward thinking, accepting, loving citizens of the world. Now more then ever, witnessing the racial, political, and economic injustices and horrors happening in our society, it has never been more apparent that the principles, beliefs, and ideologies my mother dedicated her life to, are what we need to instill not just in children, but in the global population as a whole now! We hope that her community will rally together and show her how much her life, work, efforts, and her dedication have meant to them over the years. <span style="text-decoration:underline;"><strong>Help Us Support Sagan</strong></span><br /><br /><br /><strong>What happened?</strong><br /><br />On June 4, 2020, Sagan suffered a life-threatening brain hemorrhage while surfing in Santa Monica, CA. He managed to get himself out of the water, where lifeguards spotted his lack of motor control and got him to the hospital. He then underwent invasive brain surgery to reduce the bleeding in his brain. This was the first night of critical care with 31 nights to date in the neurointensive care unit.<br /><br /><br />Sagan was kept in a medically-induced coma for over two weeks while the neurosurgical and neurocritical care teams worked around the clock to keep him alive. Currently, he is stable and doctors have slowly weaned him off the coma medication. He has beaten the odds, and continues to fight each day.<br /><br /><br />Sagan’s insurance will not cover the intensive therapies that will give him the best outcome possible. He will not be able to work for at least 12-18 months, and this will also take a toll on his ability to cover these expenses. Please help support Sagan’s recovery with whatever you can offer. We already know he won’t be able to work for at least 12 to 18 months, perhaps longer. He will need specialized, round-the-clock neurological rehabilitation, and unfortunately the insurance doesn’t cover much rehabilitative care. And he will need, of course, to continue paying the everyday costs of living, without being able to work. However, with the proper, intensive rehabilitation Sagan could make a full recovery, be fully independent once again, and get back to bringing us amazing sound. <br /><br /><br />At a time like this, the last thing one should be worrying about is money. <div>On March 23rd, 2025, over 200 people gathered to honor the life and legacy of Láwû (Mango) Makuriye’nte in a deeply moving memorial in Los Angeles. It was a powerful testament to the profound impact Láwû had on so many across different communities. Since then, other memorials have been held throughout the country, each a vivid reminder of the love, light, and fierce spirit they brought into our lives.

<div>My name is Iris Carmina Escobar, and I was a close friend of Láwû for over seven years. They became like family to me, staying at my apartment in Los Angeles for extended periods and collaborating closely through Boss Witch Productions. Láwû co-directed Mirrored Fatalty, a project we presented and supported over the past year and a half. Their loss is immeasurable, and I remain committed to standing by their mother, Miss Edirose M. Lapid, during this incredibly difficult time.

<div>All funds raised through this campaign have been directed to Edirose to cover the substantial costs of funeral and memorial services in Los Angeles, as well as other essential expenses that have arisen in the wake of this tragedy. As Edirose battles cancer, the funds are also being used to provide her with a financial cushion, allowing her to focus on her health and navigate the profound grief of losing her child and primary caregiver.
