<div>This past Saturday, Derek suffered a sudden cardiac arrest and was taken to the ICU at the University of Iowa Health Care. Despite the tireless efforts of his care team, Derek passed away surrounded by the family he loved so deeply.

<div>Derek was a bright light, an extraordinary talent, and a dedicated leader. As a student studying Business Analytics and Information Systems in the UI Tippie College of Business and member of the horn studio in the School of Music, he brought passion, intelligence, and joy to everything he pursued. He served on the executive team for Intersection A Cappella, led with pride as the Mellophone Section Leader for the HMB, marched with the Colts this past summer, and poured his whole heart into his music and the people around him. To know Derek was to feel his warmth, his humor, and his fierce loyalty.

<div>We organized this fundraiser with the blessing of Derek’s family because we want to wrap our arms around them and bring comfort the way Derek’s smile brought comfort to all of us.

I thought my insurance would cover it, but surprise! I live in America, and that means it doesn't! I honestly forgot about my debt due to many many things happening in my life at the time, plus I believed my insurance at the time would cover it, but it did not. <strong>If I cannot come up with the $632 I need by the 12th, I will have to go to court according to the paperwork I received.</strong> In order to avoid this, I'm asking for help. My area has a really bad job market right now and I'm unfortunately a high school drop out with barely any income or vehicle to search for work. I have zero work experience and I have already applied to multiple places, every single one of them ended up ghosting me. No matter what I do or how frequent I email and call businesses, no one is hiring or is interested in hiring *me*. I have no idea what else I can do except rely on social media and my art for income, until more jobs open up and I can apply to more positions. I just placed a down payment on this new computer I got, to my understanding it's about $350-$400 a month. Unfortunately I cannot afford that with my art alone, so I'm seeking help here. I will be paying everyone who donates back with my art, you just need to send me proof of donation and I will make you a doodle. Please Please only donate if you have the means to do so, if you do not, I beg you to share this as much as you can. I need the help, and my dad is already beyond stressed. He's currently working 6 days a week, over 60 hours. Up to 14 hours a day sometimes. We pay bills and rent and currently my dad is the only one capable of affording it, However every single month we struggle to keep food on the table. I have resorted to skipping meals just to be able to pay this computer off and just to be able to help my dad a little with whatever he needs help with. I am currently eating one meal a day and if I'm able to, two meals. If money is too tight, I will straight up not eat for at least 2-3 days at a time. I insist on stretching out whatever food I have access to, and I'm serious when I say we do not make enough to survive, I'm praying this computer helps me out more.  I will be using a certain portion of proceeds to pay my computer off and whatever I have left will go straight to my savings to help my dad and I have a better future. My housing situation is currently really bad, to explain it as best as I can without boring you with too many details, my mom and my grandpa suddenly passed in 2019 forcing us to shut down and become extremely depressed. My dad made the decision to quit his job because he needed to take care of me when I dropped out of high school. We both relied heavily on my Government checks as I was a minor when my mom passed. We eventually couldn't keep affording our land payment and thus lost both our land and our house. We got offered to live with my uncle, who is quite possibly the worst human being I know and that alone is a very long story. I'm constantly surrounded by fighting and negativity, I try my best to not leave my room because I avoid my uncle as best as I possibly can. He truly sucks and I wish you all could witness the person he is behind closed doors. I've been wanting to find work so I could start saving to get both me and my dad out of this house so we could live on our own and just overall experience a better life for once. I've been in this situation for 21 years, quite literally my entire life. Born into poverty, faced some of the worst trauma a child could endure and now I'm in a different home with an even worse situation going on. I'm tired, my dad is tired and we need to get out of this house and we need to stop relying on useless evil family members. I'm grateful he's letting us stay but I cannot live with him anymore.

I will continue searching for jobs, but for now I need to lean back on Your help as well as my commissions.
