In March 2027, I’ll be taking on the 100km Sahara Desert Trek to raise funds for The Azaylia Foundation, a charity established to honour the life and legacy of Azaylia Cain. Every year in the UK, 1,900 children are diagnosed with cancer, yet it receives less than 3% of all UK cancer research funding. The foundation is dedicated to providing crucial family support, championing the voices of patients and families, and helping children access treatment options that may not be available on the NHS. Every mile I walk across the Sahara is for the children and families facing challenges far greater than any desert trek! My fundraising target is a minimum of £3,000, and by supporting my challenge you’ll be helping to bring hope, support, and opportunities to families navigating the unimaginable. Together, we can help change lives.I am taking on this incredible challenge in honour of my wonderful grandchildren — Avery, Bailey, Elizabeth, Audrey and Adeline — as well as my nieces, Margaret and Kate. My grandson, Gavin, proudly keeps all the girls in the family company! I want the younger generations of my family to grow up knowing that no matter who we are, where we come from, or how old we may be, every one of us has the power to make a difference. Sometimes that difference comes through the smallest acts of kindness, and sometimes it means stepping far outside our comfort zone to take on an extraordinary challenge — such as trekking across the Sahara. This cause is particularly close to my heart. I know personally the unimaginable pain and devastation that the loss of a child can bring. I suddenly lost my beloved son, Donald, when he was just 21 years old — a loss that changed my life forever. No family should have to face such heartbreak alone. That is why I am determined to take on this challenge and raise as much as I can for this wonderful charity, which provides vital support, comfort and hope to families during some of the darkest moments of their lives.
