<div>For those of you who don't know me, I'm Jed Schwartz, I'm an EMT and the Deputy Chief for the Washington Fire &amp; Rescue Department. Today I am reaching out to the community on behalf of the Department for support of our Fire Fighter/EMT, Maggie Atkins. As many have seen, Maggie urgently needs a kidney transplant. She has remained private about this issue for some time, however now she needs our help.

<div>We are raising funds to help Maggie cover the expenses of going through a kidney transplant. The transplant process for the recipient is complex and can go on for many months. This includes the time leading up to and following the transplant where Maggie will be out of work for an undetermined amount of time. Throughout the process there will be many financial impacts that include frequent travel to appointments, medications, rehabilitation, and living expenses.

<div>We want to give her the ability to feel supported through this process and ease the financial stress so she can focus on her recovery. While many this age are focused on building their lives and careers, Maggie has had to hit pause now, for a second time, to focus on her health. Your support will expedite getting Maggie back to a normal life.

<div>Maggie is a 26-year-old woman who was first diagnosed with kidney disease at the age of 10. By 12 Maggie had overcome her disease and remained in remission for 14 years. The damage that was originally caused to her kidneys was not recoverable and Maggie’s kidneys continued to age at a faster rate than normal. Her kidney function has now diminished to the point of kidney failure and she now needs a new kidney to survive.

<div>Outside of her kidneys Maggie has continued to live a full life, always striving to live like she has no limits. She went to college right out of high school receiving her criminal justice degree. While doing so she joined the department as a firefighter and quickly completed her EMT. She has worked on the department ever since and we have seen her persistence both on our department and in her life. Some may remember that Maggie went through serious brain surgery a few years ago and fought through that with tremendous strength. She immediately went back to school after her recovery finding a new light in helping others with health issues prepare and recover from their own major surgeries and illnesses. She completed her second degree and now is working in a physical therapy practice providing one on one care using her own life to relate to others. Last year it was with great pride that we nominated Maggie as our Rescue Lieutenant and she has served as a valuable leader for our department. Maggie’s leadership is one spearheaded by kindness. As a first responder she has given back to Washington and the surrounding communities. We know there are many that can attest to this.

Despite her health issues I am continually amazed at her cheerfulness, determination and independence. Today, in spite of everything, she works in the physical therapy field, serves Washington as an EMT/firefighter and volunteers her time at department fundraising. She arrives at medical calls armed with calm professionalism, and post call remains cheerful with awesome wit and a smile.

Support Maggie's Life Saving Kidney Transplant

Today, a family’s life changed in a matter of seconds. A family day spent at the beach ended with a horrific shark attack. A 17 year old girl would have her life completely turned upside down. Due to the severity of the attack, amputation of the left leg above the knee was inevitable. As family friends, we sit here hoping we can do something that could bring just a tiny bit of relief that may assist with Paige’s road to recovery. <br /><br />Charlie, Paige’s father, Marine, Firefighter, and Paramedic has served his Country and his community for the last 20 years. Now it’s time for us to rally around him and his family to help them in their time of need.<br /><br />If you guys are able, please donate whatever you can to Charlie and Paige. No donation is too small and the funds will be used to assist in the many surgeries, physical therapy, prosthetics, recovery process, and Charlie’s missed days from work.<br /><br />Lastly, We thank you all for the prayers and please continue to pray for this courageous, sweet, and beautiful soul. <img class="not-resizable" src="https://2dbdd5116ffa30a49aa8-c03f075f8191fb4e60e74b907071aee8.ssl.cf1.rackcdn.com/5623785_1439260702.7438_funddescription.jpg" alt="" width="100%" /><br /><br />On June 3rd, 2015 Allen Dingman of Deferiet, NY was diagnosed with Stage 4 Melanoma.<br /><br />Allen has been a life-long volunteer in the service of others in Northern New York and our nation.<br /><br />Over the past 25 years, he has served as the Volunteer Fire Chief in the village of Deferiet, Jefferson County Volunteer EMS Coordinator, Scoutmaster and Chairman of Fort Drum's Boy Scout Troop 26, and founder of the Carthage Lacrosse Club for Boys &amp; Girls Youth Lacrosse in Jefferson &amp; Lewis Counties.  From the 1970s to 1990, he served in both the Navy and the Army.<br /><br />He has selflessly rushed to hundreds of emergency calls, car accidents, structure and wild fires with the goal of assisting others.  As with many of our local volunteers, he has answered the call at all hours of the night, every day of the week, and in all weather conditions.  <br /><br />For 25 years, he has served the needs of others without asking for anything in return.  We are now requesting your help!  Since losing his job and traveling 4 hours a day for treatment, winning this battle will take a mighty effort including love, emotional support and financial resources!<br /><br />To those who know him personally, you know Allen Dingman would give you the shirt off his back in a snowstorm.  Please if you are able, consider a donation to this lifesaving cause.  The 5 year survival rates for Stage IV Melanoma are slim, but we know with all of our support, he can beat this!<br /><br />Many have asked us what they can do to help, even if they are so far away.  The answer is spread the word and please consider a small donation.<br /><br />Thank you very much!<br /><br /><br />Timeline of events:<br /><br />June 3rd, Stage IV Melanoma Diagnosis.<br /><br />He was forced to resign from his job as a contract safety officer on June 4th due to the rapid spread of his cancer and the nature of his work exasperating the condition.<br /><br />On June 16th, he had a tumor roughly the size of a softball removed from his right hip flexor area.   <br /><br />After delays resulting from complications during surgery, he was finally able to start immuno-therapy on July 21st.  <br /><br />Tomorrow, August 11th, he starts his second round of immuno-therapy injections.<br /><br />He has two more rounds of immuno-therapy injections every three weeks, then the radiation treatments begin.<br /><br />Safety Notes for Others:<br /><br />As anyone can imagine, the cancer news came as a shock to him and his family as he has worn long pants and shirts during the summer months for the last 25 years.<br /><br />Also, in what was surprising to many, was the fact that no primary site for the metastatic cancer was found.  So not only had his cancer spread to other parts of the body, but the doctors could not locate the primary site.  <br /><br />Additionally unexpected was the fact that he had a multitude of scans over the past two years during work ups to multiple hip and bicep surgeries.  During these scans and work ups, thorough blood and lymph evaluations were conducted and no cancer was ever found.<br /><br />This effort is being led by Lee, one of Allen's sons who lives in Summerfield, NC.
