<div>This is a humble request for financial help for my mother, Cynthia Johnson. As some of you may know, she has been chronically ill since 2009 with ME/CFS. It is a disabling multi-system disease that causes her to suffer daily from significant chronic pain, limited and unpredictable mobility, and post-exertional malaise (PEM) that can leave her flat in bed after physical exertion that most people take for granted. She has been mostly apartment-bound the last few years as a result of being an immunocompromised person during the pandemic, mobility limitations, and car troubles with her 1995 Ford Windstar.

<div>Unfortunately, the financial assistance (social security, SNAP, etc.) my mother receives monthly simply does not fully cover all her basic monthly living expenses (i.e. food, phone, internet, healthcare expenses). She lives so simply and diligently, only spending money on the most necessary expenses, but her limited savings have run out and she does not have any other source of income. And there’s other things she really needs that she hasn’t been able to afford such as: dental care (badly!); other medical expenses/supplements she goes without to save money; dietary choices that would benefit her health; car repairs for her ’95 Windstar (which has a scooter lift she is reliant on).

<div>My mom has been so brave in the face of the misfortune life has handed her. When I was in elementary school, she survived breast cancer while being a single parent. ME/CFS then took away a career that she loved, a significant amount of her mobility and independence, and left her bedridden for almost two years resulting in the foreclosure of our home in 2016. In recent years, despite her major health limitations and the global pandemic, she has managed to stay involved in her community by volunteering on Zoom-based committees and tirelessly advocates for disability justice and ME/CFS research/awareness, as her health allows. I greatly admire her resilience and optimistic spirit.

<div>As for myself, I am currently finishing the last couple quarters of my undergraduate degree while working part-time, and do not make an income that allows me to support my mother. If this fundraiser can provide my mom with financial stability for the near future, it would make a world of difference for both of us: allowing her to focus on her health without over-exerting herself trying to get the bills paid each month, and allowing me to finally finish my degree and advance my career without worrying about my mom’s immediate wellbeing. And if we can raise enough for additional expenses like dental care or car repairs, it would improve her quality of living even further.

<div><strong>CONDITION</strong>
</div>

<div>James wants me to help you understand what life is like right now. It’s difficult, because, unless I was here every day, experiencing this with him, I would not be able to imagine it from a description. This diagram shows a few of the ways James copes.

<div><strong>Extreme sensitivity to light</strong> means light hurts his brain. He has very special light bulbs he controls with his phone and when I’m in his room I’m basically feeling my way around, doing things pretty much blindly. He puts a black sleep mask on so I can turn on the light – which I really must do to get some things done.
</div>

<div>What this means: He has not been able to look at the sky for two years. When we take him outside by ambulance his eyes are fully protected.
</div>

</div>

<div><strong>Extreme sensitivity to sound</strong> means that sound hurts his brain. He wears noise-cancelling headphones all day every day. He adds foam hear plugs under them when a neighbor is mowing their lawn, or when I’m doing something noisy in the room, like changing bandages on his toes. In February of 2020 he had a 45-minute seizure because my dog barked right outside of his closed door. It was a terrifying experience. It hasn’t happened since because I work super hard to protect him from noise.
</div>

<div><strong>Extreme sensitivity to “input” </strong>means that he cannot listen to speaking, watch a video, or read. He can process a word or two and read a sentence or two. Any more than that and his brain starts to hurt. If the other person doesn’t stop talking, etc., it will give him a “brain crash.” This means that he will suffer for a few hours, potentially a whole day. He fears this pain and suffering more than anything. During the crash he cannot look at his phone at all – not to check the time, not at all. He can’t talk to Siri. He can’t do anything but lie in darkness and silence and wait for hours and hours in total isolation before he can do any tiny thing at all.
</div>

<div><strong>Extreme fatigue</strong> means he cannot expend physical energy without suffering a serious consequence. He can’t pick up anything that weighs more than a few ounces. He can lift his phone, he can lift a plastic fork for food, or a pill bottle for a pill, but he can’t hold his arm up long enough to, for example, shave his beard. He can’t sit up. He can’t stand or walk. Doing one small task, such as reaching around next to him on his bed for something he can’t find, can give him a “crash.” During a physical crash (vs. a brain crash) he loses the ability to do anything with his arms at all. I have to feed him, or, if it’s so bad that he doesn’t have the strength to chew, put a straw in his mouth so he can sip pureed soup.

<div>He does not experience brain fog, which many with ME/CFS have. His brain works brilliantly, but right now he can’t do anything with the many creative thoughts he has.
</div>

<div><strong>HIS TALENTS</strong>
</div>

Now he can only dream of ever holding a guitar again.

<div>In July of 2020 he began writing poetry for the first time in his life. <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1735971804/ref=dbs_a_def_rwt_hsch_vapi_tpbk_p1_i0" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">We published a book</a> of more than a hundred poems in October of 2020. He kept writing. He has another book to publish now. But I’m too overwhelmed with his care to produce it. It’s a lot of work. And, sadly, in the past several months he’s become too sick to keep writing poems. These days he can’t use Siri on his phone for more than a few minutes at a time. If you check out the Reels and Videos there, you’ll see his fans performing his poems for him, since he can’t do it.

<div><strong>CARE</strong>
</div>

<div>Having fought for Social Security Disability, and with it Medicaid, I've struggled for the past year to get no-cost care James needs through this means. The level of frustration, and number of tears shed, over the inadequacies of Medicaid services are abundant. Here's a summary:
</div>

<ul>
<li>Medicaid only pays $10 an hour, attracting the least-qualified caregivers.
</li>

<li>Agencies give caregivers rules which compromise their ability to help as we need.
</li>

<li>The Medicaid caregiver app doesn't work, and when they aren't paid because of it, they quit.
</li>

<li>I have gone weeks at a time with no help, as they try to find someone new to work with James.
</li>

</ul>
<div>I’m on disability myself. My own health is compromised by a chronic, progressive illness, which gets worse with lack of sleep and the stress of 24/7 caregiving, when I have no caregivers to help.
</div>

<div>Therefore, I have privately hired high-quality people who do whatever is needed.
</div>

<div> 
</div>

<div><strong>TREATMENT</strong>
</div>

<div>Most of James’ medical care is not covered by Medicaid. His excellent ME/CFS specialist is out-of-state. Most of his treatments are in the form of supplements and over-the-counter drugs which are not covered. Most of those average about $60 a month, but there are some that are extremely expensive (up to $1,000 a month for a new one). I am including a photo of everything that James takes every day. Some are as basic as all of the B vitamins; others are a little more obscure. Prescriptions are covered unless they are compounds. Those are out-of-pocket like the supplements.

<div><strong>SURGERY</strong>
</div>

<div>One of his odd symptoms is urinary hesitancy. He’ll feel the urge to pee, but it can take up to an hour for the stream to start. We learned that this is a symptom of a rare condition that some with ME/CFS develop – Adult Occult Tethered Cord. The bottom of the spinal cord has a filum which becomes fatty or stiffens, creating tension which causes neurological problems, including neurogenic bladder. The severity of James’s neurological issues (light/sound sensitivity etc.) might be caused by this condition. There are those with ME/CFS who, after having tethered cord release surgery, see a huge improvement in their ME symptoms.
</div>

<div>At the end of this month, November 2021, we are meeting with a South Carolina neurosurgeon to discuss this surgery for James. We are very hopeful that, since the treatments he is receiving help others but don’t help him, tethered cord is the reason for the severity of his condition. Getting the surgery would not cure him, but most people with ME/CFS can stand and walk to the bathroom, sit on a sofa, look out a window…

<div>The honest truth is that James wants to live, but not like this, so I’ll explore anything with even a remote possibility of helping him. Right now he’s on, what might be considered, two experimental drugs – one of them is $1,000 a month. But with or without these, he’s gradually getting worse, not better. Since tethered cord is a progressive condition, this further encourages us to pursue it. The most common cause of death for people with ME/CFS is suicide. I’m fighting every day to keep James from giving up.
</div>

<div><strong>HISTORY</strong>
</div>

<div>Without knowing what was going on over the years, James’s ME/CFS progressed slowly following a serious Epstein Barr Virus in 2010. His disease is considered a post-viral syndrome. Those with Long Haul Covid experience similar symptoms, with an added pulmonary element. Universal awareness of Long Haul Covid, but not ME/CFS, can be attributed to the media-focus of the Covid-19 virus, an exposure which—along with research funding—have historically not benefitted patients with ME/CFS. The chart below shows the contrast in funding priorities. For example, 2,000 Americans have brain cancer, which receives more than $300,000,000 in funding. By contrast, ME/CFS impacts 2,000,000 Americans, and receives only $16,000,000.

<div>On May 30th, my cousin Fernando Forero (known to some as Ferch) was involved in brutal hit and run on his E-bike. He was left with a broken shoulder blade (left side), multiple broken ribs, in an area that has altered his deep breathing, slight hearing loss (right ear) and several skull fractures that have altered his vision and has increased his sensitivity to light.

<div>EMS rushed him to the hospital; they reported him as a John Doe who had been involved in a hit and run and left unconscious. Upon his release from the hospital, he reported the accident to the Greenville, South Carolina police. They stated it was a reckless driving incident and no evidence found on the scene. The E-bike he rode was left in the front yard of a house, as per police and EMS. However, it was than stolen. The homeowner has video evidence on their Ring camara, and police are investigating the robbery. The police report was just released, adding to their investigation both the bike robbery incident and accident. Praying for positive results in order to pursue legal action toward this individual who had no heart in hitting him and leaving the scene.

<div>He is lucky to be alive. A father to three amazing children; blessed to have him back with us recovering day by day. He was able to make it to bless his oldest Ryan who will be protecting our country as he joins the US Army in the vertical construction engineering program, witness his 19-year-old Mars graduate HS to now attend Winthrop University pursuing a teaching degree and to rejoin with his 3-year-old Nakoa who flourishes and brings him joy daily.

<div>Unfortunately, these injuries will keep him out of work for at least 2 months. Overall, depending on rehab and upcoming treatments recommended in his recovery plan. He has implemented a healthier diet and set goals to slowly begin his sports routine such as yoga, tennis, and soccer when permitted. Family and Friends have been his biggest supporters, but he does need some extra help during this time. This life changing experience might even force him to a career change. Anxious over how will he make ends meet with upcoming medical bills and regular monthly bills. Any little bit helps!

Maksym works in construction. His earnings go for immediate living expenses—and so the family has no savings.

<div>In mid-June Hanna experienced acute pain in her lower jaw from a severe infection that required emergency surgery to extract all the teeth from her lower jaw. She is unable to chew and can only eat soft foods.

<div>Subsequent examinations revealed severe damage to her upper jaw and teeth caused by ongoing infection—meaning that all her upper teeth must soon be extracted. The treatment plan includes the extraction of all teeth, the insertion of implants into both jaws, bone grafts, and full arches of artificial teeth.

<div>The first surgical procedure is scheduled in mid-July at a clinic in central Ohio. The treatments are expensive and not covered by their insurance.

<div>I was a specialty food shop owner when my life was upended by illness. Like many disabled people, my savings were quickly drained by medical bills and just getting by. Not only did I have to sell my shop, give up my livelihood, and my passion, I also suddenly couldn’t tolerate any of the foods I’d built a career and life around. I feared I’d never be able to enjoy a meal with others again, one of life’s great pleasures.

<div>It turns out my fear is shared by people with a variety of chronic conditions, food allergies or sensitivities, and energy limitations for preparing meals. Figuring out what we can now eat can be a painful, long learning curve. Surprisingly, people with very different conditions often end up eliminating the same foods to help them feel better. When you’re really sick, incremental improvements are huge.

<div>As a homebound person with no stamina, I had to ﬁgure out unfussy dishes within these new food parameters with short ingredient lists so they’d be easy to prepare. The recipes I was ﬁnding were lackluster, so I started to create my own recipes using the skills I’d honed in my food career. I never imagined the process of creating foundational recipes would rekindle my passion for food. Yet with every coconut milk swap and citrus squeeze, a dream began to emerge of a cookbook of my recipes that could bring joy back to all sorts of people living with chronic illness, food allergies, and energy limitations.

<div>Food could still be one of life’s great pleasures, a delicious and full sensory experience with everyday dishes that celebrate what’s in them rather than what’s left out. I could share these dishes with people I love —with no apologies or explanations. As I began to tell others of my dream, people with all sorts of conditions—multiple sclerosis, diabetes, celiac disease, mast cell activation, rheumatoid arthritis and other autoimmune conditions as well as ME/CFS and Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome that I have—experience so many of the same losses around food. They were excited about my cookbook for not only weeknight meals but also for holidays and family events -- gatherings that can be so difﬁcult for us or the people cooking for us. I had to make this cookbook dream a reality for all of them too.

<div>I don’t claim this to be a cure for my conditions or any others -- though a lot of doctors and nutritionists are fans, and people with many conditions report feeling better eating this way. I’m still mostly homebound. My husband does all of the grocery shopping and helps me with prep—for which I’m so grateful. Many people without support have that extra hurdle for cooking, so my recipes have them in mind. I’m also very thankful that as limited as I am, I’m still considered among the more moderately ill; some of the most severely afﬂicted by ME/CFS develop sensitivities to foods so profound that they need feeding tubes to survive. It is for these fellow patients that I’m giving all of the proﬁts from the ﬁrst year of this cookbook to the Open Medicine Foundation, one of the best hopes we have for ﬁnding causes, treatments, and a cure for this terrible disease.

The costs include Studio rental for 9 days, a Prop stylist who sources the linens, background surfaces, dishware, serveware and flatware needed for each recipe, the Photographer who handles the lighting set-up, photography of each dish and the author, then all the post-production editing. Photography assistant who helps the photographer with lighting, breaking down scenes, and running errands, Food stylist who shops for all of the ingredients, preps in advance, cooks and styles each recipe, and Food styling assistant who shops, preps, cooks, cleans, washes dishes, handles mishaps, and helps maintain the schedule.

<div>Eric was diagnosed with ALS in November of 2020 at the age of 33 years old. At the time of diagnosis I had just turned 30, our son Logan was only two years old. We are now four years into this battle and are doing everything in our power to not drown financially living with an ALS diagnosis.

<div>It is no secret that battling a disease such as this comes with a great financial burden. We struggle greatly with this because currently I am Eric’s only caregiver. I am unable to get a job and provide for my family financially due to this. And if I were able to find the time to work, Logan and I would lose the benefits we currently have that help us medically and help me put food on the table. This creates a great deal of stress for us, in addition to the stress we feel daily dealing with a terminal and progressive illness.

<div>If there is one thing we have learned while dealing with ALS it would be to ask for help when help is needed. We don’t know what the future has in store for us but we do know that we are in need of help. Housing in Philadelphia that is handicap accessible is EXPENSIVE and unfortunately for us it is a necessity.

Eric Brunner’s ALS Battle

<div>The nugs got a bunch of teeth extracted and when she came home her head was tilted all funny.  We chalked it up to the sedation.  She was so out of it and walking drunk.  But as that wore off she was still walking on egg shells and not herself.  Then her neck started spasming.  I took her back to the vet and they gave her a very rough exam in my opinion and it made it worse.  My fear is she has IVDD.  I'm getting exrays today but I'm trying to get ahead of these vet bills.  I'm already 2g's in.  So anything you can do to help would be so very appreciated.

<p>Hi, my name is Jess and I’m fundraising for my amazing brother Josh Morey. As some of you may know Josh suffered a very serious injury on Friday, 06/25/2021. He was accidentally shot in the head. The bullet entered his head through his right eye. Thankfully he is still here with us today, and did not suffer any brain injury. He has underwent extensive eye surgery at one of the Country’s most renowned hospitals. We are so incredibly lucky to have such an amazingly dedicated team of surgeons and staff at Mass General Hospital and Mass Eye &amp; Ear. In the next coming weeks he will need to undergo many more procedures and surgeries. Currently he is stable and doing well.

<p>Josh is the most amazing man I know. He is so incredibly strong and the hardest working man I’ve ever met. He started an incredible welding business and puts his blood, sweat and tears into it. He always goes above and beyond in his line of work. Let’s just say he’s a miracle man!!! He is such an unbelievably talented welder, an amazing father to his 14 month old son, and a loving husband to Jerrica. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated.
