We lost her unexpectedly on Thanksgiving day through a very tragic event, she was a victim of a murder-suicide at the hands of her ex husband. We her family, are asking for help. She was a very strong, independent, single mother raising her three young daughters. We are asking if you can please find it in your heart to help us out, and will be setting it aside for her three daughters who will have to grow up now without a mother and father. Paying Tribute to Mayra Uriarte

Early this year, I was walking home from the gym on a particularly cold day. I was still dressed in my running clothes. And as I neared my home, I passed by a 76-year old woman dressed in a floor length faux mink coat. She was gripping tightly to a railing. ‘You look great,’ I told her.  Then she pointed at my own clothes— ‘Let me ask you a question,’ she said. ‘Why is it always white boys who wear shorts in the winter?’ And thus began my friendship with Stephanie. One of Stephanie's more endearing  traits is that she will launch into a wild story within seconds of meeting a person-- often before customary greetings are exchanged. And that's exactly what she did. She began telling me stories from the 1970's, when she worked as a burlesque dancer named Tanqueray. Her memory for detail was amazing, and she had a singular way of describing things. Stephanie will say the wildest things without a hint of self-consciousness. It really has a way of drawing you in. And after she'd been going for about five minutes, I interrupted for long enough to ask if I could run to my house and get my camera.   <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/51307760_1600541509357281_r.jpeg" alt="51307760_1600541509357281_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> The resulting interview went quite viral, as many of you will remember. And Stephanie had a lot of fun with it.  People were stopping her on the street all day long. And Stephanie loves an audience-- even if it’s just an audience of one. So anyone who stopped her for a selfie would leave ten minutes later with an earful of stories. And what stories they were.  Nobody has lived a life like Stephanie’s. The two of us agreed to meet regularly at a nearby diner, so I could get her whole story down on paper. We did about twenty interviews together. Our initial plan was to create a podcast. But after we'd gone quite a distance down that path, circumstances suddenly changed.  Stephanie has been in pain for as long as I've known her. When we first met she was walking with a cane. And every time we walked to the diner, she'd grip tightly to my arm. Even then-- it would take us fifteen minutes to travel half a block. She’d wince in pain whenever she was jostled or bumped. Occasionally she’d scream out. It was clear that something was seriously wrong with her leg. She attributed the injury to a bad fall that she'd suffered a few months earlier, but she seemed confident that she was on the mend. When the pandemic started, Stephanie and I continued our conversations over the phone. She would call me several times a day. And whenever I didn't answer, she'd always leave a voicemail—usually telling me some story she’d just remembered. Last month I grew concerned when a few days passed without hearing from her. I called a neighbor to check up on her, and he heard Stephanie's voice coming from the back bedroom. She'd taken a bad fall and had been on the floor for 72 hours without food or water. The EMTs broke down her door and took her to the hospital.  Ever since the fall, Stephanie has been unable to stand or walk. She is in a lot of pain. She's always been  a private person in many ways, but the current crisis has necessitated a candor about her situation. We’ve hired a team of professionals to make her apartment clean and comfortable. We’ve gotten her a 24-hour home health aide. She now has a physical therapist coming to the apartment multiple times a week.  And we're working on handling the back rent and eviction notices. Her health is not improving as quickly as we'd like, but Stephanie remains absolutely convinced that she is on the mend. Unfortunately her unorthodox lifestyle hasn't qualified her for social security. And she doesn’t currently have insurance. (Though we're trying to get her signed up for Medicare.) Her care is extremely expensive. So far I’ve been using funds from the HONY Patreon, but it’s not sustainable long term.    Stephanie and I have decided to scrap our idea of making a podcast. And I’ve spent the last few weeks retooling the story for publication on Humans of New York. Our plan is to raise funds for Stephanie’s care alongside the telling of her story. The ultimate goal is for Stephanie to live the rest of her life on her own terms. Maybe that means an assisted living facility. Maybe that means remaining in her apartment with the assistance of a home health aide. I’m not sure. But I want to provide her with enough resources so that it’s her decision, and not a decision forced upon her. But I’m not viewing this as charity. Stephanie brings a priceless resource to the table—her story. We're just going to tell that story using a new model.  Instead of selling advertising, or selling it to a publisher, we’re asking for voluntary contributions from anyone who’s gotten value from Stephanie’s narrative. If the story of her life has made you laugh, or cry, or think—please consider compensating the person who lived it. Because right now her story is the one thing she has to offer. We are being very thoughtful with the money. Stephanie knows that there are risks involved with publicly raising funds for a person in her vulnerable situation. So with her blessing, we will be placing the money in a trust to ensure that it provides sustainable, long term care. The trust will cover her living expenses and health care needs moving forward. (Which will admittedly be quite extensive.) And at Stephanie’s request, any money remaining at the end of her life will be donated to <a href="https://www.a-b-c.org/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Association To Benefit Children</a> —a highly respected New York charity dedicated to helping the city’s most vulnerable children. Dan Malone our friend and contractor and his sweetheart Ronna lost their home and all of their lifelong possessions in the Carmel fire last weekend. In addition Dan has lost most of his equipment and tools which is his livelihood as a contractor. We have only known Dan for a few years but long enough to find him to be a very kind, compassionate, talented, and genuine person. We are heartbroken for their loss as I’m sure anyone who has known Dan and Ronna over the years will feel the same way. We are hoping to raise some funds to help get them through this tragic loss. Our nine year-old daughter Olivia died of an incurable brain cancer on January 16th, 2019. Olivia was an extraordinary human being who left a deep imprint in the lives of everyone she touched.  Her absence has been felt far and wide.  During her life and hospitalization she taught us so much about living life fully, being true to oneself, having courage in the face of hardship, all with continued grace.   We would like to honor Olivia with “a nest” to be built by Jayson Fann, renowned Big Sur artist and musician, (with participation from the 4th grade and other friends.) The nest will be constructed of redwood branches and will be located in the lower playground at Carmel River Elementary.  Our hope is that it will be a place for her friends, and other children, to connect with her, have a moment of peace, prayer, or meditation.  This will be a sweet memory of Olivia at Carmel River.  One of the things we learned  in this past year is that Olivia's LOVE is bigger than her loss. The love she had for everyone, life, and the world we live in. This is her legacy. We would like to show her OUR love with this Memorial. Please join us in making this a reality. This has been devastating for her and her family as their world has been turned upside down. Colette is currently being cared for at the Lucile Packard Childrens Hospital at Stanford undergoing treatment. November 15, 2018 After a long, brave fight with ovarian cancer our dear friend Kira left her earthly body last evening on November 14 in her home surrounding by love, light and well wishes of so many loved ones across the globe.  The outpouring of love has been a comfort to all who loved her, please keep the well wishes and stories coming.  Along with leaving her body behind she also left behind her beloved young son Quincy just shy of his 8th birthday. Her wish for Quincy has been that her memory and love for him stay alive through all of us as well as knowing that he has monetary support throughout.  Whether  you personally know Kira, Quincy or Fitz please make a donation on behalf of every child who has lost their mother too soon, for every mother that had to say goodbye to their child, for every grand baby that will never know their grandmother, for every life that ovarian cancer has affected. It is a horrible disease that takes too many, too many women, too many mothers, too many grandmother, aunts, sisters and friends. She has been surviving the last 4 years with stage 4 ovarian cancer like a warrior and now in this place and time hospice is her reality. As a mother her heart, mind, body and spirit are pushed onward for her sweet boy, Quincy.  One of her many wishes is to see her young boy turn 8 in January and that he continues to be supported by their community once she passes on and leaves her body. I have listened to Kira and heard her wish that all money raised on this platform be used for Quincy's future. I have a urinary tract infection, cancerous fluid called ascites which will be drained. I have more cancer in lymph, on liver and now on spleen. This is really bad news bares. I'm not long for this world, please be kind at least.  1:25 PM 9/23/18 ~ Looks like I'm going on Hospice. End of my life, gonna try to make it to Jamaica to say goodbye to my family. I hope I can make it to my sons 8th birthday. This is so surreal, I can't believe I'm actually dying.  August 20th, 2018 Kira has always had a raw honesty when it comes to her fight with this wicked and debilitating ovarian cancer. It has claimed organs, time and her ability to function "regularly". In her vulnerability Kira has remained humble in regards to her financial needs and they are ever present. Kira is in desperate need for emotional support as well as financial support  to assist in medication, healthy foods and regular expenses. This is an ongoing but urgent fundraising effort and if you have the time, means and empathy to support if even just a small amount monthly you will be greatly appreciated. What we've been up to: - Working: The summer time is our busiest time! We've been doing lots of moving, hauling, and landscaping jobs, and even did our first long distance move last month. Our member apprentices earn $15-17 hour and receive on the job training.    - Supporting: We go with each other to navigate daunting government offices and to register for school. We share stories, break bread, and show love through words and actions.  In July, Jumoke, David, Juan and Al attended <a href="http://relationaluprising.org/">Relational Uprising</a> 's <a href="https://www.thewatershedcenter.org/program/relational-somatics/">Relational Somatics</a>  training, which supports movements to foster a healthy, interdependent, relational culture of complex connection and inclusion. Thanks to the <a href="https://www.thewatershedcenter.org/">Watershed Center</a> for hosting us! - Housing: Most of our member apprentices are not in stable housing situations, which makes it challenging to show up rested and on time. We've rented a home where the core crew of Tightshift members and apprentices will live, have dedicated meeting, healing, and training time, host events open to the community, and practice being together in a caring, relational way.  What's next: - We're buying a truck.  After learning more about our different options, we decided that it's better to save up for a new truck ($45k) than to buy a used one ($15k), which is likely to need costly repairs and make no guarantees for how long it will last. On top of that, truck and moving insurance is $15k per year, and general liability is $3k per year.  - We're creating a healing center in Amherst, VA. When coming home from jail and healing from trauma, there's nothing like getting out of the city into a space surrounded by nature and a caring environment. We are partnering with the <a href="https://www.schoolofliving.org/">School of Living Land Trust</a>  and the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/will2survive/">Women's International Living Library (WILL)</a>  to build out the infrastructure we'll need to support people in this way.  How you can help: - Hang out with us! Dear Family and Friends, Matt Wilson, beloved father, husband, brother, son, and friend, died Tuesday, December 6, 2016 in a flying accident. So many are in deep grief over this sudden loss. My story is simple, I have been a paraplegic since an auto accident in 1980 and after an active 35years using a wheelchair my spine finally broke again. There are lots of words and syndromes we could talk about in more detail but really the bottom line is due to lack of muscle control below my injury level my scoliotic (twisted) spine finally broke loose to an extent where my cord was severely pinched and could no longer be ignored. This all began in december of 2014 and i have now had two major spinal fusions, had a colostomy installed and spent over 4 months in the rehab hospital and as of today I have spent the last 7 months wrapped in a body jacket.  I had my first surgery in June of 2015 and after 5 months 15 of the 16 screws loosened and had to be removed, I underwent a second reconstructive surgery where they basically fused my entire spine from the thorasic to the sacral levels the current surgery placed 24 screws and 4 titanium rods into my spinal column as well as a cadaver bone and stem cell cage to fuse the damaged t-9 t-10 verterbrae. I made it though the first year of surgeries, co-pays and hospitalizations by working hard,. hustling and using my savings and even selling some old family hierlooms but i am now out of the hospital and using iv drug therapy for osteoporosis that costs almost 2700.00 per month and also having to pay for personal caregivers to dress me and help take care of me, about 300 a week and this doesnt count the two latest surgeries, it was also neccesary for me to borrow to buy a new chair and seating to position me upright and give my body a chance to heal properly. So if you know me you likely know how hard it is for me to ask for help, what i can say is i really dont have another option, so i intend as of now to recieve gracefully that which i need to heal my body so i can return and be of service to the world. Around 1:45 AM on June 27, 2016, a man broke into 94-year-old Betty Reid Soskin's apartment in Richmond, CA, where he brutally beat and robbed her.  Her face was badly bruised from the attack and many of her possessions were taken, including an iPad, laptop, cellphone, and her commemorative coin collection including one given to her by President Barack Obama for being the oldest park ranger in the U.S.   President Obama has announced that he will  replace this coin. Betty Reid Soskin Fund

I could tell you a million stories of how Alana has showered her magic on the lives of so many, but I don't have to. If you know her, you have felt it for yourself. Whether you have felt the healing touch of her hands, or been whisked away for a magical day in the heart of Big Sur, you've felt her nurturing care, heard her powerful laugh, and ridden the wave of her adventurous spirit. Alana gives her energy so generously to everyone who is blessed to cross her path, and there is no one else quite like her.  In this moment, we have all been given an opportunity to bless this beautiful being as she begins her healing path to beat Cancer. After an emergency appendectomy, Alana was informed that she has cancer in her ascending colon known as goblet cell carcinoid. This form of cancer is very rare, and with Alana being 4 months pregnant, the healing road is going to be a long and delicate path. At this point, the team of doctors at Stanford have recommended removal of Alana's ascending colon, followed by chemotherapy. Depending on what they find, there may be more surgical procedures involved. As of now, these procedures will be taking place after Alana has given birth. For now, she has began a holistic path to wellness that is safe for her and her baby. Alana hopes to attend the Gerson Institute as soon as financially possible, where she can receive additional support for her health regimen.  Any support, whether it be financial or through prayer and good thoughts will be humbly accepted with the utmost gratitude. Funds will be helping pay for Alana's healing road.  We thank you from the depths of our hearts for holding space for Alana on this journey of healing.

Egee Mabolis, a beloved figure in the Silverlake community where he has been the parking lot guard at the local Trader Joe's for many years, was badly injured in a bicycling accident on November 20. He is at USC Hospital in Los Angeles, and so far is without feeling in his arms and legs. Egee does not have health insurance, and is far from his home and family in the Philipines. As everyone who knows him will tell you, Egee is one of the kindest, most cheerful, generous, and optimistic people you will ever meet. If you don't believe me, just check out this story about him that appeared in <a href="http://www.laweekly.com/arts/the-man-devoting-his-life-to-the-silver-lake-trader-joes-parking-lot-4591349" target="_blank">LA Weekly</a> a while back. Assuming he regains the use of his limbs, Egee will have to learn how to walk again, and faces a long and painful recovery. The money raised here will be used to help offset his medical costs and the loss of income he faces during this extremely challenging time.
