<div>There is a good chance that you already know Sheila Colla: she is a brilliant academic, conservationist, author, political advocate, parent, and community leader. She is also our dear friend.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Sheila recently received the devastating and shocking news that she has a rare and aggressive form of thoracic cancer. She is trying to remain positive, as there are some very new treatments and clinical trials that she may be eligible for, but she and her loved ones are reeling and the situation is very serious. While we don’t yet know exactly what Sheila’s treatment will involve, we know that it will be very difficult, and may require care at a centre of excellence outside the country with extraordinary travel and medical expenses not covered.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Sheila is an incredibly generous person, endlessly giving of herself to support her friends, neighbours, colleagues, students, community members, and family. If you live in east Toronto, you probably know her because you’ve seen her around and witnessed her support for her neighbours and people in the community - whether or not she knows them personally. You might have connected through East Enders Against Racism, a group she helped found, or through her volunteer work in local Facebook groups that connect and support thousands of parents. You may have helped her support a family of refugees new to Canada. Maybe you’ve sung with her in choir. Or, you might have followed her on a “bee walk” through the Don Valley, learning how to identify a common eastern bumblebee while admiring a patch of jewelweed.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Sheila’s deep care for her community is matched by her deep care for vulnerable native ecology. If you aren’t a conservation scientist but know something about the plight of native bumblebees, Sheila is very likely the reason. And if you are a conservation scientist, then we don’t have to tell you about her dedication to the field. She’s written 50 peer-reviewed, published journal articles; three peer-reviewed books; two book chapters. By Google Scholar’s count, her work’s been cited 4,250 times. (Even actor and environmental activist Leonardo DiCaprio cited one of her non-academic articles advocating for the bumblebees - she somehow finds time to write those too! - to his millions of followers.) And she has mentored so many conservationists who have in turn gone on to do powerful, essential work for our planet. It is not an exaggeration to say Sheila’s academic and professional contributions to changing the world for the better are immeasurable.

<div><br />
</div>
<div>Her support for those who most need it - from neighbours and friends and family to strangers to the tiniest at-risk pollinators - is beautiful and admirable and beyond our ability to fully put into words. But if you know Sheila, or know of Sheila even, you know.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Right now, Sheila needs that support from us.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Sheila will be taking a leave of absence from work and her husband Marc, a gifted musician and music teacher, will become her primary caregiver, requiring a step back from his professional commitments. There are no financial safety nets for artists who need to reduce their work and income. We don’t want Sheila or Marc to spend a single thought worrying about bank accounts. We want Sheila to be able to rest, spend time with her family, and access essential and complementary physical and mental health treatments not covered by insurance. We want - and we know you want - Sheila to have every chance to watch her young children grow up.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>We know that these are difficult times for many - please know that any amount you can contribute is gratefully appreciated. For those who would prefer to give directly through etransfer, gifts can be sent to IBAN BE25 9673 4450 7182 and will be auto-deposited into Sheila’s account. If you can’t donate at this time, it is also meaningful to share the campaign with your personal reasons for wanting to see Sheila supported. Your own loved ones may be moved by your care for her and want to help too. We want to surround Sheila in the same love and support that she has shown so many.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your generosity.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Anna Penner, Krista Holmes, and Victoria MacPhail- three of Sheila’s friends, representing many more
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Please note: We understand that this news is very difficult and will likely come as a shock to those of you who know Sheila. Sheila has guided and approved what we have shared in this campaign, and we will post updates as directed by her. We ask that you not reach out to her with questions about her diagnosis or treatment at this time, as she and her family are very overwhelmed. You are welcome to share messages of support here: although Sheila might not be able to respond to each one, your care is deeply appreciated.

Support Sheila Colla Through Cancer Treatment

<div>My name is Chris and for over two decades I have been living with ongoing pain in my upper back and neck. In recent years this pain has gotten much worse and is now impacting my quality of life on an ongoing basis. My GP confirms there is arthritis in the joints however there is also a benign mass that was formed in the area of my c6 vertebrate that if removed will be part of the solution to relief.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The health plan of Ontario once covered this procedure but it is now considered elective, even though it is clearly a contributor to my pain. I am self employed and still struggling to get back to a full time schedule and at this time unable to afford the $7500 cost of this and any recovery time, which fortunately is only 10 days.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>I have booked the appointment for late April and need to pay the entirety 3 weeks prior to surgery date. I was able to deposit $2k and now need another 4500 to make this happen quickly and not adding to my stress and finances. I can afford a little more at this time but not the entire cost which I have calculated at 4500.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>If I can get 200 people to donate 20-30 this can happen quickly. Every donation of 30 will get you a ticket to my live mind reading show being booked for early June. So think of this as buying an advanced ticket for a cause that will allow me to live a much better quality of life.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fund will be entirely used to cover the cost of the surgery. I have already put down $2000 and obtained a $500 discount from the clinic. I also have $1000 this month to put in but thats all I can afford.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>And to the countless people I've requested "come stand on my back" over the years, it wont be necessary much longer.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your time and consideration. I understand times are hard so even a share will help greatly

Come fix my back (Surgery needed)

<div>Earlier this month, my brother Will passed away unexpectedly, leaving his former partner Quin as the sole means of support for their three children, Sara, Liam and Ben.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>As a single parent, Quin has very limited resources, and due to difficulties with employment and unforeseen expenses, Will did not leave anything behind. As it stands, everything is being poured into meeting the daily financial needs of the kids—with nothing left over.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Will adored his children and wanted the world for them. As it stands now, a secure financial future, higher education, travel—all the things that would open the world for them—are closed off. They’ve lost their dad way too soon, but I am hopeful that with your help, they won’t lose their futures, too. Will wanted a full life for them, and every dollar you contribute will help to get Sara, Liam and Ben off to a good start in getting there.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>The funds raised will be held in trust for the kids in an account managed by me, which they will be able to access as they get older. We all loved Will very much and I can’t help but think that the best way to honour his memory is to help ensure his children’s well-being. Thank you, everyone.

In Loving Memory of William Lugsdin

<div>Hello!
</div>
<div>This fundraiser is for Davy Love, who is undergoing a medical crisis that will include a lengthy recovery period.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For many of us, Davy Love has been synonymous with good times, most notably as the person behind Blow Up, a party that still draws a sold-out crowd for its annual Christmas bash after 28 years. Whether through music, food, or simply friendship, Davy has long brought people together. And now he needs us.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>For the past five years, Davy's been dealing with health issues, which started when he found himself paralysed from the waist down due to a rare condition called Arachnoid Web. He had to undergo months in hospital and some heavy spinal cord surgery to walk again. There have been residual effects of the damage done by the spinal cord fluid being cut off. This damage has caused lasting mobility issues and will probably affect his mobility for the rest of his life. Throughout it all, Davy's kept running his business, Brick Lane, and not let anything keep him down for too long.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Fast forward to last week, when Davy went into cardiac arrest and ended up in hospital. As he put it: "I was told that there was major multiple (8 in total) blockages in my heart... some blockages so serious they were at 100%.... within 20 minutes of that diagnosis I was told I needed open heart surgery...."
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Davy is currently in St. Michael's Hospital in Toronto recovering from a surgery where multiple stents were put into his heart (thankfully, he didn't have to undergo the open heart surgery). There are still five blockages, so there may be more procedures to come. He's being monitored closely and is thankful for the medical team who got him over the first hurdle.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>One thing's for sure, Davy's looking at months of rehab and recovery, which will be made more difficult because of his already limited mobility. This is a stressful time, made worse by the fact that he has bills and rent to pay. He will also have to pay to retrofit his apartment to support his rehab.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>This is where you can help! Davy feels quite awkward about asking anyone for help. But if you can spare a few dollars, please donate to help Davy take the time he needs to make a full recovery without worrying about his home. No amount is too little—it all adds up (of course, if anyone has some extra to give, it will be received with huge amounts of gratitude). The funds will go directly to Davy.
</div>
<div><br />
</div>
<div>Thank you for your generosity and show of love. Your support is greatly appreciated.

<span style="color:rgb(127,127,127);">Hello everyone,

It is with a heavy heart that I announce the loss of my mother, Shannon Pearson. Shannon passed away on April 23, 2023, at the age of 40, after a devastating battle against Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS). Her passing was sudden and unexpected despite the terminal diagnosis given almost 2 years ago. <br /><br /> Shannon was a mother of 3, a friend of many and a loving sister, and daughter. She will live on through her 3 children, Tyrell (24yrs), Brianna (20yrs) and Avaya (2yrs) as well as her family and friends who love her so dearly. <br /><br />We are all devastated and heartbroken over the loss of Shannon. She was an amazing woman, she was selfless, loving, gentle and very caring towards her family, loved ones and anyone who was fortunate enough to have known her. She will be missed dearly.<br /><br /> My two younger sisters, Brianna and Avaya and I are absolutely devastated by our mom’s sudden passing - as I’m sure you are too - and we are struggling to find the funds to cover the cost of her celebration of life as well as the funds to support my two younger sisters through this difficult time. <br /><br /> Here is a list of some of our upcoming expenses through these hard times: <br /> - celebration of life costs<br /> - urns<br /> - diapers<br /> - groceries <br /> - bills/rent<br /><br /><br />As many of you know, we’ve not been strangers to financial struggle. Shannon would never ask for help, even when she needed it the most.

Shannon was the caretaker and provider for our family. Without her we are lost, heartbroken and alone.

Please consider donating if you are able to do so. We are so very grateful for any help we can receive during this heartbreakingly difficult time. <br /><br /> With love,
Tyrell Pearson</span>

Jennifer was a passionate teacher who inspired all those who knew her. She touched so many young lives and families with her generosity, kindness, and loving spirit as an educator.  She instilled a love of reading and literacy in so many and was a beloved colleague to all. Jennifer will be fondly remembered by her students and school community at Norman Ingram Public School.  Her most special places included being in the classroom, visiting Ireland and spending time cottaging with her family.  Words simply cannot express how much she will be missed.<br /><br />During the days leading up to her funeral and the difficult ones that have followed since, so many have asked how they can help.  Her friends and colleagues have created this fund as a way of honouring Jennifer’s memory in a place she loved deeply; her school, and as a way of helping her precious children follow the same pursuit of knowledge that she held so dear. <br /><br />Our goals with this fund are to create:<br /><br />·       <strong>An outdoor library and seating area</strong> that will be installed and dedicated to Jennifer in the outdoor learning garden which her classroom would have overlooked.  <br />  <br />·    <strong>   A permanent reading nook</strong>, housing her favourite books that will be placed in the school library.<br /><br />·        <strong>A yearly literacy award</strong> that will be established in her name and awarded to a graduating student who demonstrates a love of reading. <br /><br />·       <strong> An education fund</strong> that will be opened in trust for her children Jonah, Nathan and Phoebe to help pay for their education expenses.<br /><br />Jennifer's most enduring legacy is her three beautiful children who now must carry on without her.  Jennifer and Michael made sure that they never wanted for anything, but we all know how expensive higher education can be and 12 years of battling cancer can be financially straining. This fund will not cover all their expenses but our hope is that if everyone is as generous as their means allow, it will contribute in some way. <br /><br /><strong>Jen, you were a beacon for so many.  For those of us who had the privilege of knowing you, know that you have left an imprint on our hearts forever and your spirit will live on in us.</strong><br /><br /><img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/34934780_1543448534850956_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" alt="34934780_1543448534850956_r.jpeg" />
