From sweet treats, to bread and water, loss, exile, and survival.
These images reflect the life once lived by a family in Gaza; allow me to introduce you to Wafa and Haitham. Before the war and displacement, Wafa and Haitham and their children used to bake for family, friends, and neighbors in Gaza. Wafa, passed along the skills and recipes she learned from her elders. She and her family baked and decorated delicious treats, they loved to feed people and decorate sweet treats of happiness for others; together they would bake and create colorful goodies for special occasions. Wafa loved her kitchen; especially her oven. She fondly remembers the many intimate and large celebrations full of love and community. She finds solace in those memories and retains hope for a better future, a future where she and her husband Haitham can rebuild their home and thrive again.
Wafa has been in survival since displacement. Baking has stopped. No ovens, no flour, no food, no eggs, or butter or sugar are easily available or affordable. cakes are a rarity or non existent in survival mode.
Until they can bake cakes again, Wafa and Haitham bake bread and help organize their small community. Haitham assigns tasks according to ability. Together they sustain so much and help so many of their neighbors too. They’ve endured unspeakable tragedy and terror but from the rubble, they’ve built a tiny environment where they and their neighbors can care for one another, physically and emotionally.
They both always have kind words and concerned questions for me; with warmth and patience they endure so much and still lend a helping hand or loving ear to all.
Please follow their profile and befriend them and their family and tiny community in Gaza. If you’re able to help, small gifts go so far and are the backbone of survival for so many of our brothers and sisters enduring life in Gaza. With love and gratitude always, Felisa
