I grew up here, went to Roosevelt High School, and later graduated from the University of Washington. My parents have worked hard their entire lives—both of them are employees at the Hyatt Hotel Seattle. We are a close, loving family, and they’ve always given everything to build a better life for me.

<div>On 4/18, both of my parents were <a href="https://www.kiro7.com/news/local/video-woman-critically-injured-south-seattle-hit-and-run-crash/3dfaa811-6a64-4039-bde2-89df220d992c/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">hit by a motorcycle</a> that ran a red light at high speed near MLK Jr Way S and S Alaska St in South Seattle. The rider fled the scene, leaving them both on the ground.

<div>My mother was critically injured and rushed to the ICU, where she fought for her life for days. On 4/20, she passed away from her injuries. We are heartbroken beyond words.

<div>My father survived, but he sustained serious injuries to his spine and knees. He is in pain, recovering physically, and carrying the heavy emotional burden of this loss.

<div>Yanan Xu was shoved into the subway tracks at the Chambers Street station on Aug 29 where she suffered a fractured leg. Mrs. Xu is a recent immigrant and had only been in NYC 3 months when the attack occurred as she was returning home from job training.

<div>Mrs. Xu had no health insurance and had to endure the pain of a fractured leg for 6 weeks before finally having surgery on Sept 29. Mrs Xu will have to stay off her feet for a minimum of 3 months and her husband is unable to work full time in order to care for her. With no relatives in the country, they will need help in paying rent, living expenses and recurring medical bills.

<div>Although this suspect was not charged with a hate crime Mrs. Xu there were a dozen other riders on the platform at the time when the suspect singled her out.

<div>The Chinatown Mural Project a 501c3 nonprofit organization is organizing this fundraiser for Mrs. Xu and all funds raised minus the Paypal fee will benefit Mrs. Xu.

A few years ago, the couple experienced a miraculous opportunity to open a restaurant, a business they passionately worked towards, located next to Pike Place Market in Seattle.

<div>On Tuesday, June 13th, at 11 a.m., while commuting to work, they were stopped at a traffic light, preparing to make a left turn at the intersection of 4th Avenue and Lenora Street. In that moment, an unknown gunshot rang out, and instinctively, the husband tightly embraced his wife, who was eight months pregnant. Despite feeling no pain due to the suddenness of the incident, he realized that the objects hitting his arm were bullets. Thinking he had successfully blocked all the randomly flying bullets, he turned to look at his wife and noticed that she had been shot and was in critical condition. He frantically tore his clothes to stem his wife's bleeding and immediately boarded an ambulance to Harborview Medical Center's operating room. However, the 34-year-old mother, with a beautiful smile and lovely demeanor, and their unborn daughter tragically passed away.

<div>According to court documents, my friend, who was 32 weeks pregnant, was shot four times. She passed away in the hospital, and her unborn child survived for a short time but also later died. Sung was able to hold his beautiful daughter for a quick moment to say goodbye. My friend never got to hold her baby daughter... Doctors were able to remove the bullets from his arm, but fragments scattered inside could not be removed. Fortunately, the bones and nerves were not affected, and he has been discharged from the hospital.

<div>Based on the surveillance video, my friends' vehicle stopped at the intersection, and the suspect quickly ran up to the driver's side door with an extended arm. As he approached the vehicle, smoke could be seen coming from either the handgun he was firing or from the shattered glass window of the vehicle. Sung did not even notice someone approaching his vehicle. Who would have thought this would happen? The suspect, named Cordell M Goosby (30), is a convicted felon and should not have been able to possess a weapon. The handgun used in the shooting was reported stolen.

On May 5, Zhi’s mother, Mei Ran Hu was stabbed to death in her apartment in San Francisco by her next door neighbor, who is known to have serious mental health issues. Because Zhi's father passed away a few years ago due to illness, Zhi is now the sole survivor of the family. On top of that, Zhi is still grieving for his Grandma passed away just two months ago. She had lived with Mei Ran, and now both are gone. Obviously his mother’s tragic and sudden death is a terrible blow for Zhi. As an immigrant with limited English language skills who works as a busboy at a restaurant, Zhi barely makes enough to support himself. <div>My father came to this country with the hope of economic promise. For years, he worked 12 hour days as a cashier and saved.  Used his savings to open a small grocery store, then finally a jewelry store called Solid Gold. This store holds a special place for my family.  It put me through college and provided a place for my brother, a combat Veteran, to go after he came back from overseas battered and lost.  My father loves this store and he loves the community which surrounds it.  He loves his customers and I would like to think that there is mutual admiration and respect for every gold chain across the counter.

<div>Things have never been as tough as they have been recently.  We were just scraping by during the covid pandemic then the evil opportunists during the George Floyd protests looted the store and left him with virtually nothing.  My dad persevered though.  His customers were glad to have him back.  Then someone violently robbed the store.

<div>First he pistol-whipped him.  Then he stomped his head when my father tried to get up.  Then finally beat him in the head 28 times with two of those blows thrown with a deadly hammer.

<div>My Father was gravely injured.  He was critically ill in the ICU after suffering from an internal head bleed and severe concussion. He spent 4 days there before heading to a rehabilitation facility.   He is relearning how to do the most basic things like walk, read, and talk.  My father is 68 and his “American Dream” has come to a crashing halt.

<div>There has been no media coverage of this crime despite its horrific nature. With so much violence against Asians lately I struggle to understand why no one seems to care.

<div>Thankfully, the suspect is now in custody with a $130,000 bond. He has a long criminal history but the charges against him are weak. The robbery could have been a stick-up alone, but I believe the hate / anger filled in this person led to the many unnecessary blows to my dad’s head. We want justice and to get this violent man off the streets before he hurts someone else.

Help My Dad Recover from Robbery & Severe Assault

<div>I was very hesitant and scared at the same time to share the story of my father to the community. Last Saturday on October 1st, 2022, my father confronted two shoplifters who was trying to steal from his store and ended up be meeting a tragic end. He was stabbed by one of the shoplifter’s multiple times and was pronounced dead on the scene. My father Tommy has been operating his hair product business in downtown for nearly 20 years. Over the past five years, my father has been in multiple incidents like this, confronting shoplifters and getting beat with a golf club, getting beat by multiple men breaking his nose and fracturing his arm. Every time he would come back home with injuries like this, I would tell him, “Just give it to them, it’s too dangerous,” but not once did he listen. This has infuriated me very much in the past, but after Tommy had passed away, I got to speak with one of his neighbor store owners. She told me, “Tommy wasn’t fighting for himself, he was protecting all the small business owner there. Because if you just let them steal easily, they are going to keep coming back. He was more like a brave heroic figure to us.” After hearing this, aside from anger, I am proud of my father and his bravery. After my father’s passing, I got to visit his work place for the first time, every one of his neighbor store owners, landlords, friends, came to me with welcoming arms as if they had seen me their whole life. It was my first-time meeting most of those people, but they knew everything about me. They told me my father would never stop talking about me. My father loved me more than anything, and this gave me mixed feeling of joy and sadness.

<div>It is deeply saddening for me that my father is now gone, but as his only daughter, and the only remaining family member he has here in the United States, I know it is my duty to send him in peace. I am planning to hold two funeral services for my father, one here in the United States, and one back in his hometown in South Korea. My father always mentioned that if he were to pass away, he wanted his ashes to be laid next to his father’s grave. That is exactly what I am planning to do. Physically I am now here alone in the United States, but I know my father will guide me for the rest of my life with his bravery and love. I know I am not alone. I wanted to share my story with the community, anything would be a huge support for me during these hard times. I would like to thank all of you guys for sharing your time to read my story.
