Our brother Matt (known to many of you as Coach Hawn) was recently terminated from his teaching position by the now former Sullivan County Schools director who has attacked Matt’s introduction of racial justice materials to students to read and discuss in an upper level Contemporary Issues social studies class at Sullivan Central High School in Blountville, TN.   Matt has taught as a tenured teacher in the Sullivan County School system for 16 years and prior to this past year had never received anything other than satisfactory reviews as a teacher and coach, serving the entirety of his career at Sullivan Central High School where he taught Economics, World History, Cougar Experience, Personal Finance and for the past eleven years  Contemporary Issues. Matt has also coached softball, football, and was the pitching coach for the varsity baseball team.   We are proud of Matt---he has been an exemplary teacher for almost two decades, including being nominated for Teacher of the Year for Sullivan Central during this past school year. As is his legal right as a tenured teacher, Matt is fighting this termination process as he believes the actions taken by the former director of schools are unjustified and politically motivated.  While we ultimately believe the process will exonerate Matt and return him to the classroom and the playing field,  the appeal process as defined by Tennessee law could extend many months and has several steps either party may appeal until it reaches a final conclusion.  The purpose of this Go Fund Me is to support our brother financially with any expenses related to his dismissal appeal and to replace his salary in order to pay for his living and healthcare expenses----including health insurance. (Matt is a type I diabetic and will use the money raised for insulin, diabetic testing supplies, health insurance, insulin pump supplies, etc.) To those of you that know Matt, you know his passion for teaching and love for his students and players. He is eager to get back into the classroom and do what he loves...teaching students. Hello everyone, My name is Walter, and I am 32 years old. I am reaching out to you all today to share my story and ask for your help. 

When I was 8, my symptoms of Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) were ignored by doctors for almost year. By that time it was too late. This led to 8 of my now 16 surgeries.  Aside from the hole in my esophagus and vocal cord dysfunction, this condition also severely decayed my teeth. And no matter what I did the effects couldn’t be reversed or remedied. As an adult, GERD made a reoccurrence in my life, presenting the same problems once again. A few weeks ago, I sought help at Aspen Dental. Unfortunately, this experience turned out to be a nightmare. I came in to get a broken tooth replaced but was pressured into getting all my upper teeth removed. I was told they were all bad by one dentist and the other said they were strong, day of the procedure. I wished I would’ve looked into the company first and their bad reputation but I was desperate. They removed all of my top teeth, but the procedure was anything but smooth. I was not properly sedated, and I felt every pull and crack. With my blood pressure soaring over 150/90 and a heart murmur, I genuinely believed I was dying in that chair. It was a traumatic experience, one that I never wish to repeat.
 I run a nonprofit organization called the Brister English Project, helping American descendants of chattel slavery with their genealogy, and I have big plans to take it on the road with live events. My smile is crucial to my work, and without it, I feel lost. Due to the pain and the negligence of the dentist, I've been unable to eat, sleep, or create the videos needed to promote and advance my nonprofit in the right direction. I can’t even kiss my wife without experiencing pain. Today, I am reaching out to you all because I need dental implants. As someone who has already gone through so much, the thought of facing another dental procedure is daunting. But I know it's necessary. I miss being able to smile without feeling self-conscious. I miss being able to eat without pain or difficulty. The cost of the dental implants I need is $24,000, a sum I cannot afford on my own. Therefore, I am humbly asking for your help. Any contribution, no matter how small, will bring me one step closer to restoring my smile and my confidence. This journey is not just about regaining my physical health; it's also about healing from the emotional trauma caused by my previous experiences. It's about reclaiming my life from the shadow of past medical neglect and malpractice. I wish to have this procedure done at Four Ever Smile in Buffalo, NY, or any reputable All-On-Four location that is not my previous dentist. Thank you for taking the time to read my story. <div>On April 6th, loved members of our GYTO community, Shivy and Crystal Brooks suffered the tragic loss of their son Bryce and a close family friend. Bryce, 16, was a selfless young man full of passion and love for life. Bryce was victim to a strong ocean current in Florida after his heroic action of jumping into the ocean to save a group of younger children out of the current. Bryce’s actions helped to save several lives. We can not even begin to understand the unimaginable impact this has had on their family, friends, and loved ones but know the power of this community.
