Demetria Hester (Sanga) is a long time community member and the woman who helped families seek and receive justice by providing crucial testimony about Jeremy Christian. In May of 2017, Demetria was physically assaulted by the convicted murderer and right wing tr*mper on a public transit train in Portland, Oregon. She approached authorities who detained and interrogated her as the assailant was allowed to leave the max platform. This allowed him to ride the train the very next morning when he attacked three people, two of whom lost their lives. Demetria has shown up for our community time and time again to help lead organizers, and in support of families affected by racism and violence. This work has not sustained her health or peace of mind. We know that Black Women are more prone to early death and depression, but her experience makes her so much more vulnerable. Demetria has made a plan to move to Ghana and has community ready to receive her as she moves toward a well deserved era of healing. We have ALL benefited from her heroic actions on the night of her assault, as her experience and witnessing helped to highlight the violence of white supremacy in Oregon. Her experience also highlights our complacency as no one stood up for her that night. That fact alone means we should do better. WE CAN DO BETTER. Help Demetria make her dream come true. Hi everyone, I’m fundraising for my awesome friend Bex of the Liminal Earth squad. Very unexpectedly tonight her poor doggo Ranger got into the trash and swallowed not one but 2 corn cobs. The ER vet managed to induce vomiting and one came up but the other is stuck, so emergency surgery is needed.  Literally in the last week her other dog had costly surgery and still has a cone on, and now this! #BlackLivesMatter #WeDoHeal In the wake of George Floyd's murder is a long, painful month that’s an extension of a year that’s challenged us to our core. We need healing. We need justice. And that requires action. Systemic change requires prolonged effort, but we can also make an immediate difference for frontline communities.  The Black Resilience Fund was launched on June 1st, 2020 to foster healing and resilience by providing immediate financial relief to Black Portlanders. Over $700,000 has been distributed to Black Portlanders since our launch, and we've also established a mutual aid network of over 300 active volunteers, delivering food boxes, performing yard work, providing emotional support, and more. The Black Resilience Fund is co-founded by Cameron Whitten and Salomé Chimuku. Cameron is a local Portlander who has more than 5 years of experience in nonprofit leadership and donation accountability. Cameron has served as the Executive Director of local nonprofits such as Know Your City, Brown Hope, and Q Center. Salomé has over a decade of experience in public sector work, working with organizations such as Portland State University, the Urban League of Portland, and Unite Oregon. She has served on many local social justice and advocacy boards and has worked for many statewide elected officials in the Oregon Legislature.  <img src="https://d2g8igdw686xgo.cloudfront.net/48455998_1593566731471029_r.jpeg" alt="48455998_1593566731471029_r.jpeg" width="100%" media_type="3" /> We’re proud of everything the BRF team has accomplished with 100% volunteer energy.
