<div>My name is Jenny, and I am raising funds for my father, Yi Dong Sun (born November 7, 1969). He has been diagnosed with metastatic hepatocellular carcinoma (advanced liver cancer, BCLC stage C).

<div>My father’s cancer was discovered by pure luck in early February 2024. He went to the hospital with severe heart pain, and during the examinations a CT scan revealed a tumor on his liver. It was devastating news that none of us expected. He was given a year to live.
</div>

</div>
<div>In the Netherlands, doctors have declared him “uitbehandeld” (= meaning no further treatment options are available). But we are not giving up. My father is now receiving tislelizumab, an anti-PD-1 immunotherapy, in China. This treatment was started out of medical necessity, after standard options in the Netherlands either failed or were no longer suitable.

<div><strong>Why</strong> <strong>tislelizumab</strong> <strong>matters</strong>
</div>
<div>Since starting this therapy, my father has shown improvement: the cancer in his lungs has decreased. Multiple scientific publications support tislelizumab for liver cancer, and the European Commission has already approved it for other indications, so this is not an experimental drug.

</div>
<div><strong>Why</strong> <strong>insurance</strong> <strong>won’t</strong> <strong>cover</strong> <strong>it</strong>
</div>
<div>In the Netherlands, tislelizumab is currently categorized as a “sluismiddel” (a locked or pending drug awaiting reimbursement approval). Because of this bureaucratic status, our Dutch health insurance does not cover the treatment abroad, even though it is medically necessary and effective for my father.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Our</strong> <strong>financial</strong> <strong>struggle</strong>
</div>
<div>The costs we are facing are overwhelming:
</div>
<div>•	Medication (tislelizumab): several thousand euros per cycle, ongoing.
</div>
<div>•	Plane tickets to China: regular long-distance travel is required for treatment. He has to get the tislelizumab per three weeks and check-ups.
</div>
<div>•	Household costs: my parents’ mortgage and living expenses continue while income has collapsed.
</div>
<div>•	Restaurant costs: my father can no longer work in our small family restaurant, leaving my mother to run it at minimal capacity. This has drastically reduced our only source of income. Also, fewer customers come in, likely because of the current economic state, and revenue is very low.

</div>
<div>Hiring another chef is not an option:
</div>
<div>•	My father, who is in China for treatment, cannot train someone new.
</div>
<div>•	Dutch immigration rules have made it much harder to bring in Chinese cooks.
</div>
<div>•	Because my father’s Dutch is limited, finding alternative options is difficult.
</div>
<div>•	We did try to hire chefs, but some demanded salaries we could not afford, and others turned out to be unreliable or unqualified.
</div>

</div>
<div>This means my mother is carrying the entire restaurant alone while also caring for my father, with almost no income to cover our growing medical and living expenses. We just are a family of 5 (mom, dad, me, my little sister and little brother). Our other family is in China and they also have their own financial struggles. Not many of them even know about my dad’s situation.

<div><strong>A little about my family</strong>
</div>
<div>My parents grew up extremely poor in China. They came to the Netherlands to build a better life and they started with nothing. As a child, I remember not having toys or many things at all. But through hard work and determination, they built a life here: a small restaurant, and eventually even a house.

</div>
<div>Now, everything they’ve worked so hard for is at risk of being lost and I can’t let that happen.
</div>

</div>
<div><strong>Why I’m asking for your help</strong>
</div>
<div>To be honest, I’m ashamed to ask for help. I’ve never done something like this before. I was raised to be independent. But right now, I have no other choice.
</div>

<div>My parents are very modest people. They never ask for help even now, they’re quietly struggling with this burden, mostly alone. As mentioned before, most of our family doesn’t even know about my father’s illness. But I know I have to step up. I’m doing this for them for everything they’ve sacrificed.

<div>We are not asking for everything to be covered, but any contribution would make a world of difference. Even partial support will help us:

De artsen gaven hem een levensverwachting van ongeveer één jaar.

<div>In Nederland hebben de artsen hem “uitbehandeld” verklaard – dat betekent dat er geen verdere behandelingsopties meer beschikbaar zijn. Maar wij geven niet op. Mijn vader krijgt nu tislelizumab, een anti-PD-1 immunotherapie, in China. Deze behandeling is gestart uit medische noodzaak, nadat de standaardbehandelingen in Nederland niet meer werkten of niet langer geschikt waren.

<div><strong>Waarom tislelizumab belangrijk is</strong> 
</div>
<div>Sinds het begin van deze immunotherapie is er verbetering te zien: de kanker in zijn longen is afgenomen. Er bestaan meerdere wetenschappelijke publicaties die het gebruik van tislelizumab bij leverkanker ondersteunen, en de Europese Commissie heeft dit middel al goedgekeurd voor andere indicaties. Het is dus geen experimenteel geneesmiddel.

<div><strong>Waarom de verzekering het niet vergoedt </strong>
</div>
<div>In Nederland is tislelizumab momenteel geclassificeerd als een “sluismiddel” (een geneesmiddel dat in afwachting is van toelating tot de vergoeding). Vanwege deze bureaucratische status wordt de behandeling in het buitenland niet vergoed door onze zorgverzekering – zelfs niet wanneer deze medisch noodzakelijk is en duidelijk effect heeft bij mijn vader.

<div><strong>Onze financiële strijd</strong> 
</div>
<div>De kosten waarmee we worden geconfronteerd zijn enorm: 
</div>
<div> •	Medicatie (tislelizumab): enkele duizenden euro’s per behandelcyclus, doorlopend.
</div>
<div> •	Vliegtickets naar China: regelmatige langeafstandsvluchten zijn nodig, omdat hij elke drie weken de tislelizumab moet krijgen en controles moet ondergaan.
</div>
<div> •	Huishoudelijke kosten: de hypotheek en vaste lasten lopen gewoon door, terwijl het inkomen is weggevallen.
</div>
<div> •	Restaurantkosten: mijn vader kan niet meer werken in ons kleine familierestaurant, waardoor mijn moeder het alleen moet draaiende houden op minimale capaciteit. Dit heeft ons enige inkomen drastisch verminderd. Bovendien komen er door de huidige economische situatie minder klanten, waardoor de omzet erg laag is.

<div><strong>Waarom we geen nieuwe chef kunnen aannemen:</strong>
</div>
<div> •	Mijn vader, die voor behandeling in China is, kan niemand nieuw inwerken. 
</div>
<div> •	Door de Nederlandse immigratieregels is het veel moeilijker geworden om Chinese koks te laten overkomen. 
</div>
<div> •	Omdat mijn vader beperkt Nederlands spreekt, is het lastig om alternatieven te vinden. 
</div>
<div> •	We hebben geprobeerd koks aan te nemen, maar sommigen vroegen salarissen die we niet konden betalen, en anderen bleken onbetrouwbaar of onvoldoende gekwalificeerd. 
</div>

<div>Dit betekent dat mijn moeder het restaurant volledig alleen runt, terwijl ze ook nog voor mijn vader zorgt en dat met bijna geen inkomen om de stijgende medische en huishoudelijke kosten te dekken. We zijn een gezin van vijf (mijn moeder, vader, ikzelf, mijn kleine zusje en broertje). De rest van onze familie woont in China en heeft zelf financiële problemen. Velen van hen weten zelfs niet van de ziekte van mijn vader.

<div><strong>Over mijn familie</strong> 
</div>
<div>Mijn ouders zijn opgegroeid in grote armoede in China. Ze kwamen naar Nederland om een beter leven op te bouwen, helemaal vanaf het niks. Als kind herinner ik me dat we nauwelijks speelgoed of andere spullen hadden. Maar door hard werken en door niet op te geven bouwden ze hier een leven op: een klein restaurant, en uiteindelijk zelfs een huis. Nu staat alles waar ze zo hard voor hebben gewerkt op het spel, en ik weiger om dat te laten gebeuren.

<div><strong>Waarom ik om hulp vraag</strong> 
</div>
<div>Eerlijk gezegd schaam ik me om hulp te vragen. Ik heb nog nooit zoiets eerder gedaan. Ik ben opgevoed om zelfstandig te zijn. Maar op dit moment heb ik geen andere keuze. Mijn ouders zijn bescheiden mensen. Zelfs nu vragen ze niemand om hulp en ze dragen deze zware last in stilte, bijna helemaal alleen. Zoals ik eerder heb geschreven, weet het grootste deel van onze familie niets van de ziekte van mijn vader. Maar ik weet dat ík nu iets moet doen. Ik doe dit voor hen, voor alles wat ze voor ons hebben opgeofferd. Wij vragen niet om alles vergoed te krijgen, maar elke bijdrage, hoe klein ook, betekent ontzettend veel. Zelfs gedeeltelijke steun helpt ons:
