<div><strong>The past several weeks have been some of the most difficult times our family has ever faced. I spent countless days and nights by my mother's side while she fought in the ICU. With very heavy hearts, we recently said goodbye to our beloved mother. </strong>

<div>Our family would like to express our deepest gratitude to everyone who supported us during my mom's hospitalization. Whether you visited, called, sent messages, prayed for her recovery, donated, or simply kept our family in your thoughts, your love and support carried us through some of the darkest days of our lives. <div>For thousands of Dakota men, women, children, and elders, this was not a nightmare—it was their life during and following the Dakota Exile.

<div>This ride specifically honors the Dakota people exiled after the 1862 Dakota Wars and the subsequent Dakota 38+2 mass execution ordered by President Abraham Lincoln.


</div>

<div>In the winter of 1862, nearly 1,700 Dakota were displaced to an internment camp at Fort Snelling, where an estimated 100 to 300 died from starvation, measles, and cholera.


</div>

</div>


<div>In 1863, the remaining Dakota women, children, and elders were loaded onto overcrowded steamboats by the U.S. Army and abandoned far from everything they had known. Many leaped from the ships, risking drowning over the horrors awaiting them, and many others perished during this harrowing journey.

<div>For those who reached shore, on what is now known as the Crow Creek Reservation, life was hell—starvation to the extent of forcing them to dig through animal waste for seeds, while over 300 children and many others succumbed to malnutrition, disease, and the harsh, extreme environment. Dakota women endured relentless physical, mental, and sexual abuse.

<div>This traumatic experience left indelible scars on the Dakota community, impacting generations to come and shaping their enduring fight for survival and justice.

<div><strong>Emerson Begay was so close to many people.</strong> A talented artist, musician, and dancer, originally from New Mexico. He traveled to many places sharing these talents with everyone. He made people laugh and smile. A positive soul that blessed so many people.

<div>Students at Haskell Indian Nations University would like to host a Memorial For Cole BringsPlenty on April 19th, 2025 to honor the memory of our friend, classmate and relative Cole. These funds would be so that we can host an event and support his family during this process, Organizers have gotten consent from Joseph BringsPlenty (Cole's Father) to do so. we would really appreciate the support/donations from the community to make this event happen.

<div>As some of you know, we have lost our friend and family member, Joseph Komok. Joe was a loving member of our community. His passion and medicine was ceremony using the sweat lodges. He loved to share the experience and teachings with anyone who was interested. Other interests included drum making, weaving with cedar to make hats, beading and carving and again teaching those skills to others.
</div>

<div>Joe overcame much adversity and injustice in his life. Many who went through situations similar to his did not survive. His personal strength and ceremonial practices got him to a place where he could heal. Part of that healing was the love he found with Katleen Colaert of Belgium. Their story is the kind that movies are made of. Joe is an Inupiaq Native from the Native Village of Mary's Igloo near Teller, Alaska. Joe would recount stories from his childhood of riding dog sleds and using animal skins for clothes. He had fond memories of the days before his family moved to Nome. With the influence of the new surroundings, his life from that time forward was changed. He found himself taken from his father's loving care and put into the foster system. The years from then until he was about 50 were fraught with adversity including 25 years in the federal penitentary system where he saw behavior that no one would want to remember. The passing of the Native American Religious Freedom Act of 1978 may have saved his life during that time. That is where he learned his spiritual ways.

<div>Recently, Joe was suffering with heart disease and was so looking forward to having surgery so that again he could heal and live longer to spend more time with Katleen and his family. Unfortunately, his time came sooner that many of us hoped.
</div>

<div>Joe is survived by his son, Joseph Alokie Luther Komok, his daughter, Rosemarie Martinez (Troy.Clawson) and six grandchildren. He was predeceased by his parents and all four of his siblings.
</div>

<div>We want to give Joe the burial and funeral he deserves and are setting up this fund to make that happen. The services will be on Saturday, July 20, 2pm at 804 State Avenue in Marysville at Schaefer-Shipman Funeral Home.  Prayers up for Joe and his family.

Honoring Joseph Komok: Support His Final Journey

The COVID19 pandemic has hit the Navajo Nation especially hard and a peak in cases is expected in the next few weeks.  There is a shelter in place on the Navajo Nation and elderly are especially encouraged to stay home for their safety to reduce exposure.  See this recent link in the New York Times - <a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/us/coronavirus-navajo-nation.html"><a href="https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/us/coronavirus-navajo-nation.html" target="_blank" class="" rel="nofollow noopener noreferrer">https://www.nytimes.com/2020/04/09/us/coronavirus-navajo-nation.html</a> </a><br /><br />Chinle Planting Hope is a local organization that works on different community development projects in Chinle, AZ, on the Navajo Nation. Chinle Planting Hope is currently focusing our efforts on vulnerable elderly and working with the Chinle Senior Center to help get hot meals and emergency food baskets to elderly in Chinle and surrounding reservation areas. We are buying extra aluminum trays for hot meals and assembling essential food boxes that can be delivered to Navajo grandma and grandpas that are quarantined, lack transportation or have extra needs during this stressful time for the next 3 to 4 months and beyond.  <br /><br />This project with the Senior Center and elderly in the community is an extension of the ongoing work Chinle Planting Hope is already doing on the reservation through our Chinle Community Volunteer Team that runs each year.  Chinle Planting Hope has a long term commitment to serving in the Chinle community and is honored to help care for our precious Seniors at this difficult time.  <br /><br />Please partner with us now to provide emergency food supplies during the pandemic and help strengthen the long term service work of Chinle Planting Hope and the Chinle Community Volunteer Team.   Thank you so much and stay healthy! Food Baskets for Elderly on Navajo Nation-Covid19

My sister in-law, Fanny Mae Spencer Garcia (age 69), Diné-Navajo Nation Tribal member passed away March 11, 2020 in New Haven, Connecticut. She lived with her daughters whose wish is that Fanny be interred next to her infant son's grave  at the Itak Cemetary, Itak, AZ within the Tohono O'odham Nation lands.  <br />Fanny spent most of her life in Indian Wells, Diné Nation and she also spent many years with her husband and family in Tucson on the Tohono O'odham territory. Fanny's sisters in Arizona hope to see their sister for interment on April 27, 2020. <br />It is a difficult time to loose a relative at this time. <br />Fanny has a 2,650.7 mile journey to arrive to be burried next to her infant son's grave  at the Itak Cemetary, Itak, Tohono O'odham Nation lands.
