I had the opportunity to connect with a young man living in The Gambia, which is an impoverished small country in West Africa. While rich in beauty and warm people, The Gambia is one of the most materially needy places on the planet. According to the World Bank the urban settlement of Brikama (the location of the person these funds are going to) is "home to 307,501 poor people or 48% of the poor, the highest number of poor people in the country." <div>I am fundraising for Suwaibou Ceesay, 20 years old, who became the caretaker and breadwinner for his three younger siblings in 2018 when he was only 14 years old. In 2017 his mother passed away from complications due to untreated high blood pressure. In 2018, his father succumbed to age and stress as well. This left Suwaibou to take care of his sisters (10 and 7 at the time, now 16 and 13) and a little brother (who was 5 when his father died and now is 11).

<div>Suwaibou has struggled to keep his family fed and safely housed. The children need to go to school and Suwaibou wants to finish his education, too. They need money for back and current rent, funds for regular food, and also for education. Rent costs around $90 a month -- a year of rent is $1,080. The school fees for one child add up (there is technically no tuition in The Gambia, and education is free, but there are school uniforms, books, and supplies that have to be purchased and many cannot afford these things [<a href="https://www.gambiarising.org/education-in-the-gambia.html" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Source</a> ]). It's about $300 per year for each child to go to school. Food is not expensive by U.S. standards, but it adds up and keeping children fed is not easy when there are not ways to make a good income due to lack of education and jobs.
</div>

<div>I know that there are scammers in The Gambia, but I have already given money to Suwaibou through a grocery app (groceries were delivered and he showed the delivery to me). I supplied mosquito nets and beds, and he showed me what was purchased as well. We have had video calls and he is who he says he is. Suwaibou has a great track record of being honest about the things he has needed and which I have helped with. I have also purchased some clothing for his sisters, and he was kind enough to send photos of them wearing the clothes he got for them with money I sent. Suwaibou is resourceful and is doing as best he can to care for his sisters and brother.

<div>However, I am at the end of my ability to keep assisting alone. I can't give more than I have already as I also have to pay my own bills and I'm supporting family members and a medical student in Egypt as well. I said that I would set up a GoFundMe for Suwaibou so he can fundraise and what he raises I am able to send to him.

<div>I will ask Suwaibou to provide updates about what he is able to do with the funds he raises here, and I will share them. The main concern is to help Suwaibou and the children with their education because escaping the trap of poverty in The Gambia can come through better education. Most employment comes through agriculture, but tourism is a growing area of employment in The Gambia [<a href="https://visitworld.today/blog/1045/work-and-employment-in-the-gambia-work-visa-for-foreigners" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Source</a>]. Education is a hope to better things.

At first, he was the organizer of the fundraiser and it showed I was the beneficiary, which was the opposite of the reality. Thanks to the helpful GoFundMe team, I am now showing up as the organizer with Awad as the beneficiary.

<div>With your help, we were able to help Awad get through the study portion of medical school, the first 5 years. The program is a total of 7 years, however, and there are 2 more years of practicum: it's the internship portion of study and requires $12,000 in tuition and fees for those 2 years.

<div>As of April 2025, I have put the first $6,000 on my credit cards and borrowed money from a friend, but we need to raise the next $6,000 as soon as possible, ideally by May 2025. I am looking at cashing in some retirement (if I can even do so) but it won't cover all of the $6,000 because of early withdrawal penalties and taxes (I will be taking a loss).

<div>In addition, Awad requires around $500 per month for the next two years to help with rent, food, supplies for his internship, and other expenses. Myself and a couple of my friends help pay for about half of this per month, but I could use help with this as my debt payments are increasing.

He is not able to be legally employed in Egypt and there are few jobs on the side, not to mention he is working 12-hour shifts in hospitals and clinics right now as he does his internship.

After experiencing five w-rs that required military escalations, this difficult expansion contributed to refining my character. Despite the financial difficulties I have faced during my 17 years in G---, I have persevered and continued to achieve my educational goals.

<div>I completed my secondary education, which qualified me to join the Zagazig University Faculty of Human Medicine, the faculty I dreamed of since my childhood, where everyone called me a family doctor. I traveled to Egypt and enrolled in a university specializing in Human Medicine, and I am now in the fifth year of my academic program [written in 2024 ~<em>K.B.</em>]. The past several years were extraordinarily difficult among the members of the university, and in these days of constantly seeing and experiencing the situation in G---, in light of... w-r and g---cide. So much of what we had has been destroyed -- our home and the neighborhood in which we grew up is gone and now there is no food nor water.

<div>I have not been in contact with it for a long time, and the economic situation did not allow me to pay for the rest of my university expenses, as the average academic year is $6,000, and I have 3 years remaining (almost 1 year of school and 2 years of internship) and the living expenses that have been saved, as I now have no breadwinner and no financial support.

<div>During the fierce w-r, my family moved between six different areas of danger. Now, they simply find themselves in southern G---, staying in shelters under non-functional conditions, especially with the harsh weather. [Update: They returned to the north in February, but conditions there now are even worse.] It is unfortunate that the direct attack by aircraft is counted as a number of times specified by a number of controls, and others are injured, and some of them go out to receive treatment in many countries, and we have lost everything we can of material, psychological and physical resources.
