Since re-opening in September 2021, we have been struggling to bring back our audience to our B Street theater, and that is slowly happening. But we continue to need your help in surviving these crisis times.</strong>

<div>Many of you have heard about Celebration Arts’ good fortune to have received a $714,000 allocation from our 6th state assembly district Assemblymember Kevin McCarty. We are grateful for his show of support for Sacramento’s Premier Black Theater after 37 years of serving our community.

<div>First, the grant will not be available until 2024.

<div>Second, when we can access the funds, it is earmarked for specific line items, such as staff salaries and capital building improvements.

Celebration Arts Needs Your Help

Thank you Beloveds, for all those who have sent us prayers, well-wishes &amp; asked how you might support us during this time.  While I envisioned doing party fundraiser &amp; see all my peoples, I'm realizing I just don't have the capacity yet.<br /><br />As you may know, we were in a pretty severe wreck on the 580E last Sunday.  While we were Blessed to walk away whole, the car is totaled and we are recovering physically from concussions, whiplash and emotional trauma.  (Mama Ro bouncing back significantly slower, you might have already seen Che out &amp; about!)<br /><br />As a small business owner and independent contractor in Oakland I am not covered for the work days I've missed nor for medical care.<br /><br />As of yet, I have not been able to return to work due to pain, swelling, and the journey to returning to normal Ro post-concussion.  The majority of my healing work and art practice requires my hands which i don't yet have full use of.  My account has already been drained by car impound expenses, as well as our medical bills, none of which has been covered by insurance.  Not to mention normal cost of living, rent, food, etc.<br /><br />While I am prayerful I'll be able to return to work next week, I am being advised to wait a bit longer, and even then I'm not sure how long the journey will be to working again at full/former capacity.  <br /><br />Funds are needed immediately- your Love contribution will go toward keeping a roof over our head, groceries, business expenses, travel until we get a new car, and continuing to receive medical care for myself &amp; Che while gifting me with the time off required to heal.<br /><br />Thank you for considering a contribution to our Road to Recovery Fund. Youth Empowerment for Girls Roadtrip

Our beloved sister/artist/activist/spiritual being Reshawn Goods AKA “Bush mama” needs our immediate support. In her words: “Two years ago the state decided that my son is no longer disabled, mind you he still has the syndrome he was born with, he still has corrective surgeries to have and I’m still giving/ handling all of his home care, home schooling and managing his medical arrangements. I have fought like hell during these past two years to keep his SSI benefits and demanded a day in court to fight for him. We were cheated out of due process, didn't get our day in court. Not only did his benefits stop on the 1st of January without a notice but the state also wants me to pay back every dime he was given in the last two years.” <br /><br />This situation has caused a sudden and extreme financial and emotional hardship, one that could threaten her being able to keep her housing in a ruthless Oakland housing crisis. She needs our financial and moral support to navigate the next two months (February-March) to cover her rent and take time off from work while she advocates for her beautiful son/sun. She also needs a lawyer who would be willing to work pro bono and who has experience with fighting the state over SSI benefits. She also needs someone who is willing to go with her to appointments while she navigates this situation. We need to step up as a community for a sister/mother who has been making powerful art, doing amazing spiritual work, and is an important part of our Oakland community. In marking 28 years of serving the Black Dance field, the International Association of Blacks in Dance (IABD) will host its 31st Annual International Conference and Festival in Dayton, OH from January 22 – 27, 2019, in partnership with Dayton Contemporary Dance Company. IABD offers the largest convening of dance directors, programs, and companies that offer persons of color the opportunity to join with the broadest gathering of Black Dance professionals in the US and Internationally, including agents, artistic directors, artists, choreographers, company managers, executive directors, historians, presenters, scholars, teachers, and so many others.<br /><br />It is an honor to be invited to participate as a panelist presenter for this conference. I will be presenting my recently published article "Rebalancing Dance Curricula Through Repurposing Black Dance Aesthetics," which will soon be available in the online journal Research in Dance Education. Over four days, I will engage in invaluable professional opportunities such as workshops and panel sessions that will provide examples of successful new and innovative models for me to draw from in furthering my own practice-as-research endeavors. Dialogues with legends and next generation artists will inspire new thinking for a vibrant future for dance. Classes and workshops for teachers/studio owners will be offered at the conference and festival. Career pathway workshops, and post career guidance will also be offered. Once in a lifetime performances will include a gathering of national and international Dance Companies and artists only seen at IABD.<br /><br />These opportunities come at a price that without adequate funding I will not be able to take full advantage of.
