Along with our home and belongings, we have also lost all of our tools and supplies for our construction business. <div>Her beloved home of 6 years was ripped in half and slid 100 yards down the mountain. After blacking out and waking up, she immediately screamed for her babies. The next 10 hours were the most harrowing of her life as she dug her three children out of the rubble. Due to a complete communication blackout, she had to sleep on the floor of their neighbors home despite life threatening injuries.

<div>They were able to send out an SOS signal and her and her daughter were airlifted by helicopter to the nearest hospital. Her two other children were brought to a shelter where a DSS case was opened due to there being two unaccompanied minors.

<div>Unfortunately due to someone falsely filing for FEMA, this mama was bounced from shelter to shelter and temporary hotel stays. She suffered a traumatic brain injury and this has made it hard to coordinate all of the resources she needs to get back on her feet.

<div>She was 2 days into staying at a home she rented for 3 months when she was brutally arrested during a "wellness check" that was called on her. 20 cop cars showed up and harassed this woman, the entire interaction was recorded and has gone viral on tiktok due to how ridiculous the interaction was. While she was held in jail on a false warrant for a different woman with the same name, her children were placed into temporary foster care. Her 4 year old son and her two daughters have been separated in different foster placements.

<div>This mother has been through unimaginable trauma and despite being someone who needs disaster relief more than anyone else I've met, she has slipped through the cracks of the system.

<div>Our team has been with this mama every day making sure that she is receiving emotional support, nourishment, safe housing, and adequate legal council.
</div>

<div>We need your help. We pray that FEMA assistance will be sorted eventually but for now we need immediate funds to get this mama and her children in a safe situation and help them get back on their feet.

Help Mother and Children who were buried in landslide

<div>Help the Bowens Family Rebuild After Hurricane Helene: A Safe, Wheelchair-Accessible Home on Family Land

<div>The Bowens family—Vanessa, Casey, and their three daughters, Ivey (17), Raigan (13), and Emree (7)—lost their home during Hurricane Helene, just as they were days away from completing critical renovations to make it wheelchair accessible for Raigan. Born and raised on family land passed down through generations, Vanessa and Casey are determined to rebuild near Vanessa’s parents, who live next door and also lost their home in the storm.

<div>The floodwaters rose fast that day, reaching the family’s home by dawn and ultimately sweeping it downriver. Casey, who had poured his own labor into remodeling their historic farmhouse, waded waist-deep in water to try to secure it. Sadly, the home didn’t withstand the force of the flood, and the Bowens lost nearly everything.

<div>For now, the family is staying in an unfinished, temporary shelter. Raigan, who has Lennox-Gastaut syndrome and requires constant care, cannot navigate the space easily. The family’s long-term goal is to rebuild a permanent, accessible home on higher ground, where Raigan can be comfortable and safe. The estimated cost for a small, accessible home with necessary utilities, a road suitable for a wheelchair-accessible van, and a well is $400,000.

<div>So, its been a daunting process. Its absurd the amount of mud and damage occurred. Its amazing the support Libre and Pam are getting in both financial and in person. 
</div>
<div>Lots of donations have been made thru Venmo (seems lots of folks think GoFundMe takes a cut from the donation, but I dont belive that is true. After someone sets up their donation, GoFundMe askes for a tip for their team and thats how they get paid. Its on top of the donation.) Regardless, every little bit(a lots of them) helps greatly. Libre and Pam want to make sure everyone knows they are extremely grateful. When they eventually get a chance to settle down, you'll surely hear from them full of gratitude.

<div>As mentioned the help has been immense. Most of guts of the house have been removed from the entire downstairs to the bottom half of the entire upstairs. All the sheet rock, insulation, furniture, flooring, all they personal possessions (salvagable or not), and all the mud (or at least most of it).

<div>Still no real word from support like insurance, FEMA, etc. That will be a long process.

<div>Two of my favorite people in the world have endured a great heartbreak as their a once beautiful riverfront home was engulfed by the Swananoa River. Now that the flooding has receded they are faced with a long uninsured battle to get to any point of normalcy.
</div>
<div>You become so overwhelmed with emotion by the sheer destruction of their home.
</div>
<div>The actual house is still there, but everything inside may be a loss, as the flood waters swallowed the entire 1st floor (river side) and made its way half way up the main floor (mountain side) with an estimated rise of more than 30' with the bulk of it in less that an hour.
</div>
<div>Absolutely traumatizing.
</div>

<div><span style="font-family:inherit;font-size:1rem;color:inherit;">We have been digging their lives out of the mud since it happened last week. Everything from their bed and furniture, their clothing, all the nick nacks from 50+ years of life, every cabinet, closet, and corridor was filled with the storm's mud. Fortunately, these are all just things and luckily they were able to save themselves. Nonetheless, they are now faced with an uphill battle to recover and salvage anything from their life before last week's devastation.</span>
</div>
<div>Like most folks in the highlands, there were given the chance to wave the exorbitant cost of flood insurance and are now faced with potentially a total loss.
</div>
<div>To add insult to injury, their endeavors in SC, The Music Camp (a music and wedding venue) also received extensive flood damage being surrounded by the Pacolet River. And to make things worse, they were robbed the day prior to the storm. Whatever the theives left was affected by this storm.
</div>
<div>Its a shame and a travesty and yet, even through the quagmire, Libre and Pam hold their heads high with a smile and an occasional tear.
</div>

<div>Charlie is a dedicated beekeeper and small business owner based in Asheville, NC, whose passion for bees and sustainable agriculture has brought joy and benefits to their community. After the recent hurricane, Charlie’s beekeeping business faced significant setbacks, including the loss of hives, equipment damage, and a sudden drop in income due to city closures and affected infrastructure.

<div>52 hives were lost due to the hurricane. With each hive costing $160 to replace lost colonies ($8,320), this does not include the honey crop lost as replacement hives take time to rebuild and don’t always produce a harvestable honey crop. There is also revenue loss that Charlie is still recovering from from the immediate months after the hurricane until now as tourism begins to return to the city. Revenue loss estimated at $12,000.

<div>Charlie’s honey, which they usually sell at local farmers markets and craft fairs, is not just a product—it represents their commitment to supporting pollinators and contributing to Asheville's local economy. Support Asheville Beekeeper After Hurricane

<div>Our dear friend Paulette Sokolow lost everything in Helene at her home north of Asheville, NC.

<div>On September 27th and 28th, Helene ravaged Western North Carolina. The area of Barnardsville was devastated by raging flood waters that some say had the strength of Niagara falls. Our dear friend, Paulette Sokolow, lives there. She and her pup, Nola, were out of town for a vet visit, and that is what saved their lives. The pump house and studio were torn in half and moved across the yard, with a large tree resting on top. The cottage was inundated with over 4 feet of water with four large trees on top. The back section of the house was moved and cracked. Mud now occupies the entire crawl space. The full acre of land is covered with up to 3 feet of river sand. Eight years of creating a sustainable garden is destroyed. Where there was once topsoil and edibles, there is now only sand and rocks. Debris from other places is scattered everywhere. Her entire store of firewood, the only heat source, is gone. The 2004 CRV is full of mud. She was left with her pup, her small car and the clothes on her back.

<div>We know Paulette from the work she has done and continues to do in Nicaragua. She lived in a small community in the mountains near Esteli and worked with the local community members with seed saving and organic farming practices. She has worked on Hurricane relief efforts to feed whole villages in Nicaragua more than once. In the US, she works as an ESL teacher and helps migrant families in communities near Asheville who have been displaced from their own countries. When she was finally able to access her house, she arrived to find a group of immigrants from Guatemala ready to help her get all her soaked belongings out of the house and begin ripping out walls.

<div>It is estimated that it will take many thousands more than she will be allotted from aid sources in order to move displaced buildings, rebuild a driveway, rebuild the retaining walls (boulders were washed away!), rebuild the water system and electrical system, put on a new roof and restore her home to a livable condition, so that she can begin rebuilding the gardens and the lifestyle that sustains her. She needs help to do this.

<div>More than five weeks have passed since Hurricane Helene tore through Western North Carolina, and Rene is still struggling to find a sense of normalcy in her life and work in Asheville. She has spent countless hours helping others in need, but the reality of her own situation is becoming overwhelming.

<div>Rene and her daughter face enormous challenges as she tries to restore her home and small business, a cherished photography studio that once thrived in Asheville’s River Arts District. Her home suffered extensive water and mold damage, and navigating the claims process with insurance and FEMA has proven frustrating and largely unsuccessful. She is now facing substantial out-of-pocket costs for critical repairs to her home, including mold remediation and structural work. Compounding this, her family has been without safe, usable water for an extended time, with no clear end in sight as infrastructure repairs continue.

<div>The Cotton Mill Studio, where Rene ran her photography business, was hit by catastrophic flooding that left the building submerged under 12 feet of water for days. As a result, her studio is unusable for the foreseeable future, forcing her to cease operations just as her business would typically be busiest. She was able to recover items from her Studio, but many will need to be replaced due to moisture and mold damage.

<div>With her workspace and livelihood on hold and the financial strain of home repairs, Rene is facing significant setbacks. It will take time for her to rebuild her studio and create a stable environment for herself and her daughter in Asheville.

<div>In the midst of this catastrophe, Rene has dedicated herself entirely to volunteering and assisting those in need. Each morning, she is awake before the sun looking for ways to help. She has organized a collection of funds from family and friends, using this financial support to purchase essential groceries and emergency supplies, including flashlights, personal protective equipment, warm clothing, baby necessities, gas, and even generators for those in need. On day 6, when I asked Rene if she had taken a warm shower yet, her response was, "Not yet. I could, but that doesn't seem fair."

<div>Moreover, Rene has taken on the critical role of conducting wellness checks, ensuring that her neighbors and community members are safe and accounted for. She has taken daily trips into the mountains to deliver food, medication, and vital supplies to individuals who are still stranded and affected by the disaster. Her selflessness and determination to uplift others during such trying times are truly inspiring.

Support Rene's Hurricane Recovery and Community Efforts

<div>Living Medicine Institute, Responder Support Services, and Concierge Medicine and Psychiatry, mental health organizations in WNC, are partnering to create programming to support our First Responder Community in the Asheville area.

<div><strong>We are starting with a two-day supportive retreat for RSS therapists embedded with first responders and carrying first responder caseloads.</strong> These individuals have been heavily burdened in their dual role, supporting the mental health of the broader responder community while coping with their own losses.
</div>

<div>The first retreat will take place in October or November on the donated retreat property of Rites of Passage Council, near Asheville. The purpose will be to support these individuals and assist with acute trauma processing work.
</div>

<div>Depending on the amount raised, we would like to continue to offer more of these events for the First Responder Community. <strong>Funds raised will pay for ongoing costs: event spaces, staffing, food, and lodging.</strong> Thank you.

<div>Johnathon Grubb (JP), is a dedicated small business owner in Western North Carolina.  This skilled custom carpenter lost nearly everything in the devastating aftermath of Hurricane Helene. While preparing to build a home on his land, he stored all of his personal belongings and tools in a storage unit—only for the storm to destroy it all. Though he’s been focused on helping others in the Asheville area recover, he now faces the overwhelming task of rebuilding his life and business without the tools and possessions he relied on.

<div>"The hovering of helicopters and screams of sirens begins to fade as we are starting to take stock of what has happened. Their noise was so constant and comforting during the flood that help was on its way. This storm literally blew us away as Western North Carolina floated down a river.  It worsens everyday in the aftermath. Everyone I can remember to contact is thankfully safe, but I know many are not that lucky. We have been digging and cutting out, delivering supplies, and trying to stay positive.

<div>I lost most of my life. While rebuilding my home I have had a storage unit that held almost everything I owned. It also held most of the tools I use to run my carpentry business. Right now I'm trying desperately to use the few tools I had in my work vehicle to help anyone I can reach. Commutation has been slow and difficult to coordinate substantial help and I find myself mainly gathering and delivering supplies."

Help Rebuild a Family's Hope After Disaster

<div>Amidst the devastation and flooding in Ashville, many friends have been affected. The Little Brave family was residing alongside the edge of the Ivy River and was hit incredibly hard. Michael Little Brave, the new clan chief leader, and his wife and five beautiful daughters have had their home wiped away almost entirely. Worse yet, Michael's at-home mechanic shop Little Savage Auto was in the backyard and washed away entirely during the storm. A lifetime of tools, livelihood, bee hives, memories, and daily life essentials have all been decimated. Currently, they are living in a hotel, and this is a family that has taken me in and prayed with and for me for well over a decade. All of them have lost their home and most of their worldly goods. I am setting this up on their behalf in this dire crisis. A final point - insurance won't cover anything as flood insurance is not provided historically in Asheville, NC because it doesn't flood; this is a "1,000-year" flood that has devasted so many - including my good friends and family the Little Braves, a sicangu lakota native family who has always helped so many people for as long as I have known them.
