A Call For Support To Reconstruct My Home

<div>Hey everyone I'm here to share that Liz is in the early stages of finding out what the future will look like after recently being diagnosed with uterine cancer. The day before she was diagnosed with cancer the company she worked for announced they planned to close their doors at the end of May so she would be jobless. She is working on getting unemployment but that won't start for another 6-8 weeks and their bills are already starting to pile up as she has now started her cancer treatment journey commuting  to UW Hospital in Seattle. Her husband Ray, who has been by her side taking care of her through all of this, is switching careers after healing from a previous foot surgery that made it very painful to stand for long periods of time working as a subcontractor. Therefore, the following description may not be necessary, but I want to underline how urgently these funds are needed for the mere survival of our family. We want to convey the urgency and deep emotional distress we are currently experiencing. We are living with deep pain, generation after generation, and the recent events in Gaza have shattered our lives and left us in a state of profound despair.

<div>Since October 7th, our family has experienced three evacuations. Our neighbourhood in Gaza, Abu Mazen Square in the Northern district, has been destroyed. We evacuated to various relatives' homes in both the North and South, but we we were forced to evacuate again from the Nuseirat refugee camp when the Israelis dropped leaflets telling us the area was going to become a combat area. We are terrified for our safety. We are currently separated between different relatives’ homes and are living in overcrowded houses hosting dozens of people who have found themselves in a similar situation; food and water are scarce, and we are afraid we may soon no longer be able to find enough for ourselves and our kids. Bombardments are still ongoing near us and several homes in our area have been targeted, killing or wounding everyone inside.

<div>The recent horrifying events since 7th October have not only destroyed our homes but have also shattered our dreams and aspirations. Our home, which we have worked for years to obtain, was completely destroyed, along with most of our possessions.

<div>Both of us worked hard to provide for our family before the genocide started, and did whatever we could to provide for our children’s needs in order to guarantee them a stable future. Our son Mohammed is 6 years old , he’s a talented kid who enjoys maths and coding, and is an avid swimmer and football player. Our beautiful daughter Mariam is 3 years old, and has the most beautiful and gentle smile that could melt your heart. All of their dreams, aspirations, and potential for a better life have been mercilessly crushed.

<div>Both me and my husband also suffer from different pre-existing health conditions and the medications we need are no longer available. The longer we don’t have access to these medications, the more difficult our situation becomes and we fear for our children in the case that our medical conditions deteriorate.

<div><strong>Use of funds</strong>

<div>We need to raise enough money to pay the fees being requested by the Egyptian administration of the Rafah border crossing in order for us to evacuate to safety. These fees are exorbitantly high, and considering the situation inside the Strip, we find them to be unjust. However, at the moment it is the strongest straw to grasp. We have no other option.

<div>The goal is to raise enough money to evacuate my family’s two adults and two children. The current cost of one adult to enter Egypt from Gaza is around $7,000 per adult and $3,000 per child. This means that the funds needed for an evacuation to Egypt are around $20,000. To account for GoFundMe’s fees (2.9% plus $0.30 per donation), and to facilitate our onward travel from Rafah, we are therefore setting the funding goal at $22,000.

<div>Our family is in desperate need of supplies. These include hygiene products (imperative to keep the newborn healthy), food, water, basic baby supplies and e-sim for communication. It currently costs around $9,000 per adult, and $3,000 per child to attempt to evacuate Gaza, even if the proper visas and documentation can be accessed. Our primary focus is day-to-day survival but we hope to raise enough to secure passage for family out of Gaza. We understand we may have to <em>make hard decisions regarding who we can save</em>.

<div><strong>Economic Hardship</strong>
</div>
<div>My father-in-laws wages were frozen within the first month after the outbreak of violence. He like many, many others have no indication that this money will ever be released as it is being withheld from the Palestinian people. Unemployment prior to the ongoing crisis was unbearably high. My husband’s family who had work, have since lost those places of employment due to their physical destruction. My husband and I have completely exhausted our savings to get them this far. Securing transport from their destroyed home in central Gaza to Rafah alone cost upward of $1400 USD. A mere bag of flour going for anywhere between $300-$400 shekel. A single sweet potato $8-$10 before the supply was exhausted. I am working to sell my home in the US and working 50 plus hours per week as I’m permitted. My husband recently started a new job abroad, which has separated us as we navigate these trying times. Even with all our efforts we can still not even come near meeting our family’s needs at the inflated prices and with the scarcity of goods.

Help save my family from Gaza genocide & evacuate

<div>Hi my name is Anna. Three years ago this December, I had my first anaphylactic reaction to a Botox injection. Then six months later, I had another reaction to lipgloss, then 16 more life threatening anaphylactic reactions to numerous cosmetic and chemical products. My allergist at OHSU calls this “idiopathic anaphylaxis”. It has stolen my entire life.

<div>I was a hairstylist for 11 years and had to leave my dream job because of hospitalizations from exposure to chemicals. I then attempted two more jobs with the same result. One week ago today, I almost died from anaphylactic shock on the floor of my last workplace.

<div>I have 18 ambulance bills, 18 hospital bills with one overnight stay. I have seen specialists at the Mayo Clinic, and OHSU. I am seeking work from home to no avail. I am riddled with the physical and mental scares of this illness. Anything helps-we are drowning.

Medical expenses and cost of living

This is Tony and his father Noe. Tony is born and raised in Lahaina. Noe has been a resident of Lahaina for almost 20 years. Tony is 13 years old and has a heart condition which requires him to be on a 24 hour monitored pacemaker. Noe is a hard working single father who does his best to support his son and make him happy. On August 8th 2023, they lost their home and all of their belongings to the Lahaina wildfires. Noe also lost all of his work and means to support him and Tony. They are currently being temporarily housed at a Kaanapali resort and they don’t know how much longer that will last. They have received very little financial support in comparison to what was lost and what is needed to start over. Because of Tony’s heart condition he is unable to do most of the things he loves such as sports, paddling, swimming etc. Tony does love video games. Thanks to some funding I was able to put together I was able to get Tony a PlayStation 5 and some new clothes to go back to school with. It’s a good start but there’s still a long way to go before life for Tony and Noe begin to feel normal and stable again. They had no luck with their donation page they started through spot fund so I created them a go fund me and made this video in hopes to spread awareness and raise every dollar possible to get them back on track. Please contribute however you can even if it’s just sharing this post, this video or this story. Despite everything they have been through, Tony is a positive and kind young man who deserves to get back to a level of stability and normalcy in his life. <div>Sellwood Station is an album I wrote over two years and recorded for the better part of a year; over half of the songs were written in Sellwood, at my mother's home in a small room on the second story. I filled the room with instruments and spent many days of solitude there, singing, writing and practicing. That studio, suspended amongst old-growth maples and walnut trees, looked over an independent train track, inspiring me to name the studio "Sellwood Station," which eventually became the album's title. The other songs were written after my move to Seattle, WA, where I now attend Cornish College of the Arts. Starting fresh and contemplating the recording process ahead of me, I altered my original directions completely, re-wrote and reshaped the narrative to center around the motif of coming and going, moving away and standing at the station between new life and passed.

<div>I approached Jantzen Carter, my best friend and one of the best producers I know with my concept and asked him and his sister Krista Liana Carter if they'd be willing to take it on. They accepted, and after the home studio was finished being built by Krista, we moved into the first stages of production.

<div><strong>How it was made and who made it happen:</strong>

</div>
<div>Recording for Sellwood Station began in January 2022, with Jantzen and me in our home studio. We would spend many hours recording, carving out whatever time we could find between my work and full-time school schedule. In April, we spent three days recording in Mount Vernon with Krista, the most extended period we had to record in all eight months of production. There we worked on <em>My Version of Junk, Glass &amp; Arrows </em>and <em>Be Weary,</em> which is the first song I ever wrote. Cristian Salyer also began working on the production of the album, spearheading <em>So Long, Farewell</em>, the final song on the album, and co-producing <em>Sapling Song, Be Weary </em>and adding touches on <em>Farmers Market</em>. String arrangements were produced and performed by Aidan Lowery, who added gorgeous swells and pads to <em>Tsunami Bowling Alley </em>and <em>So Long, Farewell.</em>
</div>

<div>The photography for the album was shot by Coco Simone, a once Portland-based, now New York-based photographer and artist. We built a set in my old studio in Sellwood with the help of my mom and shot entirely on film.

Sellwood Station: An Indie Album by Wiseacre

<div>Hello!  Thanks for your interest in supporting April Mae Clara Nyquist. She is the core of our peer group, her patience, kindness, artistic spirit, and her consistent curation of intimate gatherings centered on sharing meals and adventures has always proven this.  April has a strong connection to place.  She enjoys spending time outdoors with friends and her two pups Zaagi and Debibi.<br /><br />April is both African American and Anishinaabe, a lineal descendant of the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indigenous Americans.  She was born in Duluth, Minnesota, grew up in Alaska, and spent her college years in Washington state.  Portland has been April’s home for 6 years now and a place where she has found a loving and supportive community.<br /><br />Let’s help April build a safe and secure nest for this next chapter in Portland.  Our goal is to help her secure funding for housing and some essentials for the baby while she will be out of work to care for her little one.  All donations are helpful and welcome.<br /><br />A message from April’s mother:<br />“I am blessed that April chose me to be her mom and it has been a beautiful adventure learning from her.  I am so excited she will soon meet her Little One and join in this motherhood adventure.  My favorite lesson, the young artist, April taught me was when she asked me why she couldn't color on the walls.  After all, the walls were a blank canvas, and April has brought color and life into every space she inhabits since she entered the world when I gave birth to her.  Being true to her authentic self, she created an amazing mural on her bedroom walls.  She makes space for others to create and express themselves.  April is going to be an amazing mommy, and I am thrilled to hear her answers to the 'why.'  Miigwech (thank you) Zahgidiwin Ginwenzh (April, Longest Loved) for allowing me to become Nookomis (grandmother).”<br /><br />A message from April’s grandmother:<br />“April is our first grandchild.  As new grandparents, we realized having a grandchild is the icing on the cake of life!  And becoming a great grandparent is the sweetest of life's gifts!  Thank you, darling April!”

<div>Well, second times the charm. Groucho tore his left ACL about 6 months ago chasing a big foot through the Mendocino mountains. A pricey TPLO surgery followed and he regained about 90% function. As I’ve heard and now witnessed, once one knee goes, the over compensation of this pure unit of a dogs weight was primarily on his other leg since the last surgery. The other ACL went about a week ago. This is common. So, just seeking a little help for his next slice n’ dice coming up in the next 2 weeks. The prodigy just turned 7 and has many more adventures ahead of him. If you know Groucho, you know he’s a staple in the community, whichever one he resides in for however much time he does. Never fails to bring joy to everyone.

Grouch’s new knee fund!

In the midst of a <strong>deadly</strong>, global pandemic, while most of the state was ablaze and the air filled with toxic smoke, the Kinney family was forcibly removed from their fourth-generation home. In the morning of September 9th, 2020, Multnomah County Sheriffs bashed open the Kinney family door at gunpoint. Armed with assault rifles, they barked orders for the family to pack up their belongings and move within 30 minutes. The Kinneys were given no prior legal notice, as their case was still in litigation in a higher court. Multnomah County Judge Judith H. Matazarro authorized the eviction in direct violation of state and federal eviction moratoriums.<br /><br /><br />We <strong>refuse</strong> to let another eviction happen. Outraged at the treatment of this Afro-Indigenous family, the Portland community has united to save the Red House on Mississippi, rallying support around the family to reclaim the house and hold the land in a 24/7 eviction blockade. Since September, support has grown for the Red House and today we maintain an around-the-clock community presence along with onsite camping, a fully functional kitchen offering two free hot meals a day, and free programming centered in healing and abolition. This is what it looks like for neighbors to truly take care of each other.<br /><br /><br />Our Story<br /><br /><br />One of the oldest standing homes in the neighborhood, the Red House on Mississippi was built in 1896 and has belonged to the Kinney family for 65 years. In the 1950s, William and Pauline Kinney, an African-American couple, moved to Portland from Little Rock, Arkansas to escape deep South oppression. Like other Black families, they were redlined out of getting loans in North Portland and bought the home outright with cash in 1955. There, they raised their children, and a new generation of Kinneys made the Red House their family home.<br /><br />Their oldest son, William Kinney Jr. grew up in the house and remembers a time when the home was a rental for Black families and he would help his father to collect rents. He went on to become a security officer for Portland Community College, where he served from 1976 to 1992. After being excluded from training available to white employees, he spoke out. In retaliation, he was wrongfully demoted and eventually terminated. He filed a racial discrimination lawsuit against the college. A federal jury awarded him $900,000, though he accepted a settlement of a fraction of the award amount because the college threatened to appeal. <br /><br />Meanwhile, in 1983, he’d returned to the Red House with his wife Julie (an Indigenous Native of the Upper Skagit Tribe of Washington) and their four-year-old, Michele. William and Julie had two more children, William Kinney III two years later (1985) and youngest son Michael (in 1990). Family memories fill the house and the neighborhood, though the shiny new condos and expensive food carts of gentrification tell a different story.<br /><br />Before the community garden was built across the street, it was a vacant lot known as “the field,” used as a community baseball field amongst all the neighbors. All three of the Kinney siblings played for Peninsula Little League and proudly remember the year William’s team won the district and went on to state. One winter, Julie brought the kids over to the field during a heavy snow to build a snow-cat that was about 12 feet long. It was so huge that reporters showed up with cameras to put it on the evening news.<br /><br /><br />The Kinneys describe the attack on their family as beginning in 2002, when their son, William III was taken to prison at the young age of 17 for an automobile accident. In hopes of saving their child from the brutality of the prison system, the family was left with no choice but to take out a loan against their home to pay for costly legal fees. Despite their efforts to fight the system and keep their family together, the Kinneys' lives took a downward turn when William III was taken to prison for two 5-year sentences, totaling 10 years.<br /><br />During her son’s incarceration, Julie Metcalf Kinney was met with the untimely dissolution of the local nonprofit Low Income Housing for Native Americans of Portland, Oregon (LIHNAPO), where she served as Executive Director. A longtime housing organizer for Indigenous families, she’d been involved with LIHNAPO since its founding in the early 1990s and had served as an original board member in addition to being a member of the Interstate Urban Renewal Committee of Portland and a commissioner of the Housing Authority of Grand Ronde. Mrs. Metcalf Kinney dedicated her life to fighting against the gentrification of inner-city Portland where she was born and raised. Now, decades later, her family faces the tragedy of losing their home to criminal banking practices and a horrifying illegal eviction.<br /><br />Big Banks and Back-Room Deals<br /><br />The trouble for the Kinneys intensified in 2004 when they refinanced their second mortgage with Beneficial Oregon to pay off an adjustable rate mortgage that had an increasing interest rate. The first loan was paid off by the new one. In December 2016 the Kinneys received a notice that the loan had been transferred from Beneficial to MTGLQ Investors (a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs), but that they should continue to send payments to Beneficial as the servicer. The loan was evidently assigned from Beneficial Financial 1, Inc. ("BF1"), as successor through merger to Beneficial, to MTGLQ.<br /><br />The Kinneys then received paperwork from both entities for the next two months, each demanding payment, so the family sent a letter seeking to verify the new entity that was servicing the loan. In May 2017 the loan was sold again, this time to U.S. Bank Trust National Association ("U.S. Bank Trust"). It was then transferred to U.S. Bank Trust REO Trust. In May 2018, Clear Recon Corporation was appointed as successor trustee of the 2004 Deed of Trust and they initiated the process to foreclose on the Kinney’s home.<br /><br />The Kinneys continued to challenge the process, but their home was sold via auction as a nonjudicial foreclosure in October 2018. Owing only $97,000 on their home, they were denied their right to buy it back (their right of redemption) as protected by Oregon law. They even tried to bid on their own home at the auction but were refused on a technicality. According to Zillow, the empty lot directly adjacent to the Kinney family home is worth $10.2M.<br /><br />Their home was reportedly sold to a developer, Roman Ozeruga of Urban Housing Development, who got the deed in 2018. Urban Housing Development attempted to evict the Kinneys when it first got the deed, but the eviction was stalled by the Kinneys’ federal complaint and a state counterclaim. In February 2020, possession of the Kinneys’ home was awarded to Urban Housing Development. In March, Oregon declared a state of emergency due to COVID-19, issuing a statewide eviction moratorium on April 1st. A federal eviction moratorium followed on September 1st. Moratoriums at both state and federal levels should have halted the eviction.<br /><br />What’s Happening Now<br /><br /><br />In response to the community and family’s reclaiming of the land, Multnomah County initiated a new 30-day writ of execution to re-evict the family. While it was set to expire October 27th, sheriffs failed to evict the family by the court-ordered deadline. Instead, Multnomah County Judge Stephen Bushong made an unusual decision, extending the writ of execution an additional 120 days. As winter arrives and temperatures dip below freezing, the community remains resolute in their support, initiating weatherizing projects for those who continue to live and sleep outside the Red House in anticipation of a second eviction, which could happen anytime in the next four months. History shows the next eviction may be more devastating than the first.<br /><br /><br />The family’s litigation continues, too. On November 14th, a petition for a writ of certiorari was filed in the U.S. Supreme Court. Urban Housing Development has until December 23rd to respond. While the fight continues in the courts, we’re working in the community to leverage our people power. This is where you come in.<br /><br /><br />We Need Your Help<br /><br /><br />We don’t need another empty, high-rise, high-rent luxury condominium. The Kinneys are one of the last Black families remaining on Mississippi and their fight for their home is also a real-time fight against gentrification. In order to stand a chance against the big banks and developers who’ve systematically displaced Black families across North and Northeast Portland, we need leverage.<br /><br /><br />We need to raise $250,000 by [date], the last day of Multnomah County’s extended writ of execution. This money will be an essential bargaining tool to initiate negotiations with developer Roman Ozeruga and ensure the Kinney family can remain housed for generations to come. To reach our goal, we’ll need to raise $22,000 each week starting today, on Black Friday 2020. Save The Kinney Family Home

Hello! We are Angel and Rashid. We've been together for nearly 6 years now, and are now, embarking on a brand new journey together: parenthood. In the wake of COVID-19, protests where we live in Portland, Oregon, life has been stressful, and the thought of, "do we have enough money," has made it hard to be our usual cheerful selves; yet we try our best still. Angel, due to her pregnancy has not been able to work, and Rashid is currently working the best he can. 
We live in a two bedroom apartment that is $1250 a month, plus utilities. We have a 1992 Chevy G20 van that needs repair. Our savings deplete a little every month, ane Angel is in no condition to pick up a job right now. We are asking for help to have some savings.

Our babygirl Lorelei is due to meet us all September 27th, and she has been our biggest motivation to smile, and look ahead with our best foot forward. We want our girl to have the best life she possibly can, we want to establish the security to be here for her as much as possible, without the burden of choosing another shift over her health: mentally, physically, emotionally, spiritually. We want to not just watch her grow, but be able to contribute to her dreams. 

$4700 will help us establish a savings account that is hopefully going to be enough, along with the work Rashid is doing now, so we can securely keep our home, have safe transportation, and give our babygirl the life she deserves.
