On the morning of August 2nd, my brother Santiago Paez and brother in law David (Dj Tunjo) were detained by ICE outside Chicago Midway Airport. They had just gotten out of the Uber on their way to catch a flight to Washington D.C., the first stop of a tour where David was set to host unofficial after-parties following Karol G. They never made it through the door.

Santiago and David have been living in Chicago for a couple years now, building a life where they feel safe, making beautiful connections and integrating themselves to the city. David started his DJ career in 2025 and quickly made his mark, playing Sueños Festival and venues across Chicago, and building La Mesa Presents alongside Santiago, a platform the two created together to bring Latino community together. They’re not only partners they’re a power team.

My family, David’s family and I are shaken by this situation, we’re doing our best to stay strong in order to help them.

They were detained and transferred to Indiana, where they now wait for a court date on August 19th.

Help us free Santiago and David (Dj Tunjo)

To our Buteco family.

At Buteco, we are passionate about everything that we do— music, cocktails, coffee, and food. If we had to sum it up though, we’d say that our love for people is what we do best. We believe that the best thing about Buteco is the experience that you get when you walk through the door. With that in mind, we feel like closing our doors temporarily is the best decision right now.

We know that the beating heart of this place, the part that makes it all go round, is our staff. We have a small but incredibly dedicated team of 12, most of whom are artists who supplement their income by putting in full time hours at Buteco. The hardest part of this decision is not knowing how they will survive during this period of uncertainty. We’ve created a donation link for you to help support them during this difficult time. We’re asking our over 10K loyal followers on Instagram and Facebook to chip in and help them out in any way you can. If everyone contributes what they can and shares this with their networks, it will make a world of difference. Even a few dollars will go a long way.

Thank you for all the love and support you have shown us in the short time we’ve been around. Be safe and love each other. We’re all in this together and we can’t wait until we can open our doors and serve you all again.

Much love from our Buteco family to yours.

Buteco Family

My mom was diagnosed with a mental illness that has periodically landed her in the hospital for as long as I can remember. Although she is probably one of the sweetest, most hardworking people you'll ever meet, it's been hard for her to find stable housing and income, especially with little family around. Early on, I made it my own mission to help my mom regain this stability, but I often end up feeling overwhelmed doing it alone. This Friday, my mom has the opportunity to be released from the hospital, but has no stable home to return to. I'm currently completing training for a fellowship states away from where she is, and have run out of ideas/money for solutions. My mother deserves the world, raising 3 kids on her own to the best of her ability through bouts of homelessness and stressful stigmas of mental illness. She's a complete warrior and it would mean so much to both my mom and me if she could take a break for once. Any help would be so appreciated right now.

A HOME FOR MOM

I will never forget that day because it was not supposed to happen. I wasn't supposed to even believe that a school like Harvard University was a possibility for someone like me: a black, low-income teenager from Winston-Salem, NC who just tried to do her best in school. Had it not been for the support of my mom and family members, mentors, teachers from the International Baccalaureate Program, and supportive programs like Girls Empowered by Math and Science (GEMS) and the Simmons Memorial Foundation (SMF ) , I would not have been prepared enough to matriculate into Harvard. In fact, it was the direct encouragement from my mentor Professor Omari Simmons, who founded the free college access program SMF, that led me to apply to Harvard. His belief that Harvard was an appropriate school for me to apply would ultimately be the catalyst for one of the biggest moments of my life and I am forever grateful to him and my SMF family.<br /><br /><strong>What did I accomplish while at Harvard? </strong><br /><br />Graduating with my Bachelors of Arts degree in Social Studies and African and African American Studies with a focus in black community development in contemporary America has fostered my academic interests in creating sustainable change in communities of color. <br /><br />Throughout my four years, I was actively involved with the Kuumba Singers of Harvard College, the Association of Black Harvard Women, the Black Students Association, the Boston NAACP, the Roxbury Youth Initiative, the Roxbury Youth Initiative Term-Time and the Lambda Upsilon Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated. Outside of the of these organizations, I also had the opportunity to give back to the communities that supported me as a hometown recruiter for the Harvard Financial Aid Initiative and a consultant for SMF.<br /><br /><br /><strong>Why Oxford? </strong><br /><br />I have had been admitted into the Masters of Science program in the Comparative Social Policy  University of Oxford. I am so excited for this next step in my academic and professional journey and look forward to the opportunity to gain an international perspective on various social and welfare policy approaches that I can then bring back to the States.  <br /><br /><br /><br /><strong>Why am I asking for donations?</strong>  <br /><br />The cost of tuition is £21,703, or $31,502, and being an international student means that financial aid is severely limited. For me, I have not received any financial support from Oxford thus far. Through the Alex G. Booth Traveling Scholarship from Harvard ($11,000), federal loan and $5000 in personal finances, I still need to cover lingering tuition and living costs of around $4000. I will be collecting donations throughout the summer but I need your help to do this because I cannot make this next academic journey alone. Therefore, anything you can give makes a difference. Thank you and feel free to forward this message to anyone who might also support!<br /><br /><br /><strong>Showing my Gratitude! </strong><br /><br />I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule to give.  <br /><br /> Any amount you are able to give no matter how big or small will make a difference and help me achieve my goal. <br /><br /><br /><strong>Learn More about my Journey in these articles I have been featured in!  </strong><br /><br /><a href="http://news.law.wfu.edu/2012/05/law-professor-students-help-high-school-students-get-accepted-into-top-universities/">Paige Woods and the Simmons Memorial Foundation</a> <br /><br /><a href="http://www.camelcitydispatch.com/engaging-students-in-the-community-and-the-world-beyond-the-international-baccalaureate-program/">Paige Woods and the International Baccalaureate </a><br /><a href="http://www.camelcitydispatch.com/engaging-students-in-the-community-and-the-world-beyond-the-international-baccalaureate-program/">Programme </a><br /><br /><a href="http://otcbeautymagazine.com/topics/urban-call-briefs/role-model-beyond-beauty-part-11/">Paige Woods in the OTC Beauty Magazine</a> <br /><br /><a href="http://www.nytimes.com/video/us/100000002769668/microaggressions-comments-that-sting.html?action=click&amp;gtype=vhs&amp;version=vhs-heading&amp;module=vhs&amp;region=title-area">Paige Woods in the New York Times</a> <br /><br /><a href="https://youtu.be/dbAi1BZdDI8">Paige Woods in 'I, Too, Am Harvard'</a> <br /><br /><a href="https://issuu.com/forsythmags/docs/fw08-13">Paige Woods in Forsyth Woman Magazine (p. 28-29)</a> <br /><br /><a href="https://youtu.be/Mj-beVupepc">'How Sweet the Sound' by Paige Woods</a> <br /><br /><br />All my love,<br />Paige Woods </p>
