<div>I never imagined I would be in a position where I needed to ask for help. For years, I was able to provide for myself and even help others—offering a place to stay, lending money, and giving support whenever I could. I never asked for anything in return, and I was grateful that I never needed to. But after being terminated from my job, I used my savings to get by and devoted my time to building my dream of becoming a fashion designer and clothing manufacturer. I thought that with enough effort, my business would take off, but despite my best attempts—posting ads on social media, selling upcycled clothes on Depop and Poshmark—I haven’t made any sales yet. My savings, which lasted five years, are now gone. I’ve borrowed from family, received food from a local pantry, and done everything I can to stay afloat.

<div>Now, I am falling behind on rent and utilities, and my credit cards are in arrears. The rental assistance services in my area can only help after I receive a 3-day notice to pay or quit, but I want to avoid falling behind if possible. My greatest fear is becoming homeless and hungry, but I am determined to keep trying. I am prioritizing rent and utilities with any funds I receive, and only after those are covered would I consider using a portion to support my apparel business—after I’ve sold what I’ve already made.
