Basement Try.be is a youth leadership program that is focused on getting the youth off the streets and into art programs and studios. We devote our time to teaching the youth how to use their creativity, in order to create opportunity and hope where none seem to exist.
At the end of the day, the mission is very simple: inspire the youth to be better than they were yesterday; through the arts and teach them the life skills needed to be the leaders of tomorrow.

We target youth between the ages of 13-17 who are in need of extra support and guidance; Youth who are in need of a space to express themselves through the arts in a safe entrepreneurial environment.

We offer transportation from their homes to the studio and back, along with the materials needed in order to bring our ideas to life. We offer a warm meal every class and we make sure to stay in contact with our youth through one-on-one mentoring through out the week.

We operate at the Self Made Designs Studio located at 12 Shaw St in Quincy, MA. This is a studio that practices a strong message of supporting local artists of all mediums and ages. This studio provides great opportunity through its exposure to different artists of all mediums with one goal in common! LIVING OUT OUR DREAMS.

We feel that the youth at large are lacking support, guidance, and space to express themselves, which we feel contributes to the major issues that our youth face in today’s society.

Basement Try.be Week 67
January 13th 2019

In today’s class we did some winter cleaning. We have accumulated a lot of donated clothing and material over the last year. We took today and sorted through them. We then used some of them to print on using the “Support Local Artist” or Basement Try.Be logos. The goal of this project is to give back to our community. The weather is getting cold and we want to take care of our community. We will complete this project and donate our printed clothing to local churches, shelters, or anyone who can use the clothing.
We worked really hard today and ran behind. We had a late lunch which was homemade chicken sandwiches. We also welcomed a new mentor to the team, Shlmo!
After lunch we cleaned up and prepared for drop off.

In today’s class we had instructor Brian aka iNFO come in to help us start off the new year strong! Today, iNfo taught us boxing technique and how to use it in the form of self care. We worked in groups and then broke into circuits where we each had one-on-on opportunity’s to learn the skills being taught by iNFo. After boxing, we sat down and had lunch together. We had homemade meatballs. We also used this time to talk about how our week was including what went well and what we would like to improve on.
Class came to an end, we cleaned up and got ready for drop off.

Basement Try.be Week 65
December 30th 2018

In today’s class we had all youth present. Today’s class was a little special. We hosted our first yankee swap/potluck at our home. All of the youth brought home made dishes and desserts for today’s class. We talked about our holiday and how we were feeling with the New Year approaching. We also talked about our first grant that we applied for and received! We talked about the New Year including our upcoming fundraiser. After debriefing we gathered in the living room with our lunch and chose a movie to watch. We chose the movie “Hardball.” We watched the movie as a group and debriefed about afterwards. We discussed gun violence, gangs, wrong crowds, and choosing our paths!
After the movie we began our yankee swap. Before we did this, we went around the room and talked about one thing we are grateful for this year and one thing we want to work on for the upcoming year! The youth were really insightful during this time and spoke about some of their strengths during this past year. They really acknowledged the work they’ve done and where they would like to go for the next year!
We finally began our yankee swap! The youth had fun and enjoyed swapping gifts. After the swap we relaxed and played games. Some of the youth played video games while the others played board games. We ended the night with laughs and love! Happy Holidays!!
