A Pop-Up Shop for Women in Need

In 2016, when we launched our non-profit The Pop-Up Care Shop , we were overjoyed by all of the love and support that helped us serve women and families with clothing essentials and an uplifting experience. We are continuing our mission for our third annual Care Shop and we need your help to make it bigger and better!


Homelessness is still a major epidemic in New York City, with over 60,000 homeless people, including families and children, counted in July 2017. Sadly, that number continues to grow. With so many shelters and programs underfunded and understaffed, distress saturates the space and everyone dwelling within -- from the people in need to the folks who provide those needs. This year, we want to lift some spirits with a new way of giving.

The Pop-Up Care Shop is an interactive charity drive project founded by Kadia Blagrove and Kydee Williams, two NYC writers who are dedicated to the empowerment of women and compassion for humanity. Partnering with different non-profit organizations and shelters, we collect donated goods and “set-up shop” to create a fun shopping experience for those truly in need. Items are nicely displayed in retail-fashion and shoppers get to thoughtfully pick out what they want. Our unique method rejects the standard of drop-off donations, and brings the goods to the people directly and with style!


HOW IT WORKS:

Phase 1: We host a clothing drive  social event, and guests are invited to donate their old goods and learn more about our cause.


Phase 2:  We take those donated goods and set-up shop at a charity location.



WHAT WE ARE DOING:

For 2018, we are treating the women of Camba Broadway House Women's Shelter , a Brooklyn supportive housing for single older women, to a holiday “shopping” party they won’t forget!  We will bring over the donated clothing,  place items on racks, add some decorations, play some music, and serve yummy refreshments. The ladies will have the opportunity to look through the clothes, choose what they like, all while celebrating the holidays with friends.  

Our mission is to redeem the less fortunate with dignity, enjoyment, and, most of all, choice. So many homeless women have faced hardship because of their loss of choice. Poverty and abuse can make anyone feel powerless, and many of these clients fall victim to these painful realities. We aim to empower these women with the opportunity to choose.  


WHAT WE’VE DONE

In 2016, we kickstarted our mission with Bronx women’s shelter SAMMON Build.  Then, in 2017 we set-up shop at Nazareth Housing's Park Avenue Thorpe.  To date, we successfully served over 200 women and their children with clothing, books,and shoes. Through our efforts, we’ve come to know other wonderful nonprofit organizations that we have collaborated with on events throughout the year. We’ve also gotten the privilege of partner with major retailer J. Crew for an in-store clothing drive.


HOW YOU CAN HELP:

To help us continue this work, we need your support. We are seeking to raise money to:

Transport collected clothing and supplies between storage, pick-ups, drive events, and finally the Care Shop

Buy shopping bags

Buy decorations

Buy food

Buy refreshments

Buy cups, napkins, and utensils

Supplement any costs potential sponsorship won’t meet

Thank you so much for helping make our 2018 Care Shop a major success! On December 8th, we along with our volunteers and partners (Empress Varnado and Lesley Ware) set up shop at CAMBA's Broadway House Women's Shelter. We served over 160 women with coats, shoes, clothes, and even hair products (courtesy of our sponsors Outre and Shea Moisture). Broadway House is one of the most diverse shelters we've worked with and we are so very proud! The shelter caters to some of the most vulnerable women to homelessness including seniors, women of color, transwomen, and women with differently-abled bodies. We encourage you to learn more about this shelter and volunteer with them if you can! Thank you for supporting our mission. Every dollar donated helped us purchase racks, food, transportation of goods, storage bags, and more. We are so grateful to know beautiful hearts like yours. Thank you for making the holidays special for the women of Broadway House.

Hey everyone! We hope you are enjoying the holiday season. It's during this time we reflect on what's really important in our lives and be grateful for all that we have. We are so thankful for having your support and for the opportunity and privilege to serve others. In preparation for our upcoming Care Shop, we are hosting a clothing drive on Saturday Dec 1st. This year we are serving CAMBA Broadway House Women's Shelter (which supports homeless women -- mostly ages 60 and older). If you can, please support by donating you gently used clothing and/or new personal hygiene products. Our Care Shop will be held on Dec 8th at the shelter. Hey everyone,

We are so proud to say that our Care Shop this past weekend was an absolute success!! Thanks so much for donating to our cause and believing in our mission. Special thanks to the hardworking volunteers who gave their time and hearts to a full day of service. Thank you to Park Avenue Thorpe for being such an amazing example of what it means to help others rehabilitate their lives. This year has been a blessing, full of lessons, new friendships, and beautiful opportunities.

As we say goodbye to 2017, we hope that you help us keep The Pop-Up Care Shop alive for years to come. We are currently looking for people to join our team!
