Dear Friend,
My mother, Terry Gart Berger, is fighting for her life.
After years of health challenges, she was diagnosed with chronic pancreatitis. She must have a pancreatectomy (removal of the pancreas) and an auto-islet transplant (transplant of insulin producing cells). As a result of her illness, she is connected to a feeding machine 16 hours a day and hasn't been able to eat or drink in almost 2 years. Medicare covers the pancreatectomy, but not the auto-islet transplant. She must first raise $55,000 before the surgery and transplant can even be scheduled. There are also significant expenses related to the surgery. For several months she will need substantial follow up care. The University of California San Francisco Medical Center is 245 miles from her home, therefore she will have to relocate to the San Francisco area for approximately 2 months. She will also need care 24 hours a day for the first 4 weeks after the surgery. Any amount you can give will help her get the treatment she needs so she can get back to being my awesome mom!
