It's once again time for GDFR to start some serious training on the river for the 2017 Texas Water Safari! In case you didn't hear, let us catch you up...
Last year our goal was to cut at least nine hours off our previous time which would put us finishing in 65 hours. We were mentally and physically ready to face our goal head on; but there was one problem. We made it to San Marcos to start the race without our PADDLES!! We ended up starting the race and hour after everyone else had already left. This really lit a fire under us and we pushed harder than ever which helped us exceed our goal. We completed the 2016 Texas Water Safari in 57 hours and 6 minutes. We also managed to get 2nd Place in our Class and become a part of Safari-lore as the team that started an hour late and still kicked butt!
What is the Texas Water Safari?
The Safari, billed as the "World's Toughest Canoe Race,” is an annual 260-mile race from San Marcos to Seadrift. The first official race was held in 1963 and is run every year on the second Saturday of June. Portaging dams, log jams, running rapids and crossing a bay are just a few challenges the Safari offers... not to mention the spiders, snakes, alligators and mosquitos! Topping it off, the racers must complete the course within 100 hours with all their own equipment and may only receive provisions from their Team Captains.
How can you support Team GDFR?
Team GDFR is comprised of veteran racers Larry and Sonja St. Clair, and new to the team, Shannon Molina. Along with their four daughters and two Team Captains, their adventure truly begins six plus months before the race. They are in the gym conditioning during the week as well as planning training runs on the course most weekends. It is a full time commitment from start to finish.
When all is said and done, approximately $3,000 is spent in order to make this journey a reality. Many participants enter the race with no intention of winning but with the goal of joining the elite group of finishers and earning the coveted Texas Water Safari finisher's patch. With your support, either monetary or in-kind, Larry, Sonja and Shannon can continue to test their abilities and have the chance to push themselves even farther this year.
