The Bay Shore Robotics Team is part of the FIRST Robotics Competition. FIRST which stands for "For Inspiration and Recognition in Science and Technology, is an organization that was founded by Dean Kamen to expose students to the fields of math, science and engineering. Its a "Varsity Sport of the Mind" in which the students have to raise money to create a robot that will complete a certain task. They must do this with strict rules, a limited amount of resources and a tight time schedule. They are teamed up with mentors from various disciplines to guide and teach them the skills needed to design and create the robot. This is the closest thing to engineering in the real world. It all starts in January, when our team will attend the FRC Kickoff at Stony Brook University. It is there that we find out the this year's FRC challenge. From there we have six weeks to prototype, design, construct, wire and program a robot for competition. The money raised through Kickstarter will be used to buy the materials and tools needed to create the 2016 robot.
Skills our team members learn:
Financial Planning/ Fiscal Responsibility
Students learn to fundraise throughout the year to ensure that there are funds for materials to build the robot, to enter each competition and maintain a safe and functioning shop.
Design
Students work with Engineers to use CAD to design all aspects of the robot.
Machining and Production
Students work with Machinists to create various components of the robot. Electrical Engineering
Students work with Electrical Engineers to wire all the components to power the robot.
Computer Programming
Students learn how to program the robot to do the task that it needs to.
Community Outreach
Students work with other organizations to help out in the community and spread the ideals of FIRST. The money raised on gofundme will be used to buy the supplies, materials and tools to construct this year's robot.
