Rapid integration of refugees into society is critical to Germany’s success in this European crisis.  Money beyond government funding is required for multiple projects, provisions and urgent services that are currently overstretched e.g. donations (clothes, shoes, bikes), translators, volunteers expenses, skills training, German teachers and resources for language courses.

What a day!

Congratulations to the 30 teams that swam a total 91.5kms in 5 hours and raised so much to really help integrate Munich's refugees. It was an event where everyone involved in whatever capacity, showed great energy, excitement and a positive “can do’ attitude.

Team Family Phillips set the record of the furthest distance swum in the hour of 179 lengths (4.48kms). Congratulations! The Sea Lions team of under 14yrs, managed a very respectable 151 lengths (3.8km). The Swim Across the Schools team comprised of Dr Chrissie Sorenson, Director at Bavarian International School, Adam Smith, Deputy Director at St George’s School plus swim coaches Heiko Horn at Munich International School and Ben Krodel at PHORMS, and the team swum the second furthest with 172 lengths, 4.3km.

Thank you to the HVB Club for the use of their beautiful pool, Riedel Immobilien for their generous sponsorship, SZ for their media coverage and the Ampercussions band of refugees from Haimhausen "Amper Camp" for entertaining everyone so well.

A great job!

Amanuddin came from Afghanistan (so does not qualify for asylum) and could not read or write in his own language, because the Taliban would not let them go to school. He now lives with 100 other men in portacabins in a Bavarian village. The local Helferkreis organised for him (along with 30 other similar men) to be sent on a specialist ABC course to learn German, which costs €7,500 for the basic 300 hours.

Now, he has enough German, and was proud to say that he was able to read a poster advertising a Bike Flea market in Munich. He traveled there to buy himself a second hand bike, as there are not enough donated for all the men, which meant he had almost no money to eat that month, but is proud that he now frequently rides to Dachau to the job center.
"A" now has enough German to buy a bike
