Iman's Legal Fee Fund

Wow, it's surprisingly hard to choose a cover photo for a fundraiser that could help determine the destiny of a loved one. This photo is of my partner Ryan with Iman, the night he made Maqluba for the first time.

Iman is an LGBT asylum seeker in the United States. She is a Googler, a wife, a dog mama, a beer lover, and a hilarious, deeply empathetic, and loyal friend. 

For quite awhile now Iman and her close friends and family have been doing our best to make our way through our country's gnarly and disturbing immigration system on our own, so it is a bit painful now that we ask for help. I think doing this independently was at least one way to try and maintain some sense of independence and freedom amidst a system that is doing its best to cut down your humanity at every step. However, the costs are now growing beyond our means. So, with immense gratitude, fierce dignity, and a  bit of fear for what's next, we are now hoping to expand our once small circle and see this legal case through.

For those of you that don't yet know Iman, I hope you someday get the honor. Please know that this is a very tangible way you can make a difference in someone's life. 

Those of you that know Iman well, know already that she is always the first one to show up for others. So now, let's freaking show up for her!

Iman has been in the US for 9 years and next April she is facing her final hearing for gaining asylum status. The money raised will go to pay for Iman's legal team and the fees for expert witnesses. Additionally, while Iman is working for Google now, there is the possibility that the government will not renew her work permit next month, in which case any extra help to get Iman and her family through these difficult months will be much needed. Any funds raised beyond what is needed, Iman will donate to local immigration support organizations or send home to family.
