Gladys Kalibbala, the subject of award-winning book, GARDEN OF THE LOST AND ABANDONED, has assisted hundreds of needy children and families in Uganda through her work as a journalist and on her own initiative. There are thousands of kids in and around Kampala who have become lost or abandoned through poverty, illness, neglect, and misfortune. Through her column in Saturday Vision newspaper, Gladys profiles some of them every week, with the hope that they will be reunited with family members.

Some children, though, remain stranded or require urgent assistance. Gladys is just an “ordinary” woman, but she has taken it upon herself to get involved. Without institutional funding, Gladys has personally managed to help many of these kids with school fees, medical care, shelter, transportation, family reconnection, basic necessities like clothing and food and countless other needs. She has also helped young mothers start small businesses.

In 2014, Gladys decided to launch a three-acre farming project to sustain her philanthropic efforts. Her hope was that Perseverance Garden would generate income for her children’s needs, as many have no one else to turn to when they need tuition (education is not free), school supplies, bedding, shoes, soap… anything a parent would provide. Income from the garden might also help meet transportation costs, one of Gladys’s biggest struggles in monitoring her current cases and pursuing new ones.

Perseverance Garden has weathered drought and many other setbacks to become a modest working enterprise and a place where some kids stay over school holidays. But its returns do not yet cover the growing list of needs - for that, the project must grow, too.

Please consider supporting Gladys and Perseverance Garden in these projects:

mushroom cultivation, $3,900: this will require a 10,000 liter water tank, a structure with rooms to grow, dry, and store the mushrooms, and spawn and substrate.
piggery expansion, $1,700: the construction of a ten-stall paddock.
solar power expansion, $1,400: additional panels to provide electricity for all rooms, animals quarters, the mushroom project, and other needs in the garden.

Anything you can give will be a great help not only to the garden, but to many kids and families who benefit from its progress. Gladys looks forward to posting photos to update the improvements! Thank you for your support!

If money beyond the target is raised, there are other projects which Gladys hopes to fund: on the smaller side, a goat project, and on the larger, the construction of housing primarily for girls. Updates will be provided on this front as well. GARDEN OF THE LOST AND ABANDONED

A message from Gladys below.

Dear Friends,

Hope it’s not too late to wish you a Happy New Year 2019! Thanks very much for making mine a memorable one. We had ended 2018 on a sad note after making losses with the mushroom gardens which went bad due to a problem with the seeds!

The New Year has brought us new fruits and we’re back in the mushroom business courtesy of your assistance (kind hearts). Alongside the mushroom we have added on another business of sprouts (made out of beans and at times maize). This is mainly food to Chinese who happen to be many around the city while it’s also used in some natural herbal medicine.

The continuation of our projects have enabled kids like Joel, Jeremiah, Victor, Douglas, Lokure (from Karamoja) – all will be reporting back to school this week in high moods as their school expenses have been met. I thank God that those who are at the farm for holidays enjoy what we’re doing and they all understand that by supporting these projects - it will make their future bright.
