On April 30th, nine Afghan journalists were killed in a double suicide bombing in Afghanistan's capital, Kabul.  All of them were breadwinners who left behind families in need.

These journalists survived on meager incomes, and most of them did not have life insurance. Days before the incident, one of them had sold his bicycle to seek treatment for a sick mother. Another, a young female reporter, had just moved to a better-paying job to support her family.

"An incident doesn't begin with the explosion - it begins with the cries of a mother, a sister, a wife at a home where a man who left alive in the morning is brought back in a coffin three hours later," said Farahnaz Frotan, a reporter from Tolo news.

While a few of the families have life insurance and are being helped by their organizations, such as the AFP photographer Shah Marai, others left behind family members who are now in desperate need. Our aim is to raise funds to prevent these families of the slain journalists from falling in to destitution.

The funds raised will be distributed to the families, providing them with means of support.

International and local media have organised this campaign and will ensure that the funds reach the families.  Instructions for contacting the campaign organiser are as follows:   https://support.gofundme.com/hc/en-us/articles/203639894-Contacting-a-Campaign-Organizer

We appreciate your generous support.

Dear All

We have now paid all the families of the deceased. The payments were made by a local journalist from The New York Times and a local Journalist from AFP. The whole process was both heart rendering and touching. A family living in a rental apartment was threatened with eviction at the end of each month and they were struggling to survive. Another payment was made to a mother, wife and a newborn baby who was born after the death of her journalist father. Another family having likewise lost their bread winner, lived in an old muddy house. They really needed the money, but they rejected the offer and said other families needed it more than them. Fortunately our journalists persuaded them to accept the fund. I would like to deeply thank all those who donated. Many of you couldn't see with your own eyes the sqaulid poverty endured by widowed families or hear the despair of those left to fend without their husbands or sons. This makes it even more remarkable that we were able to raise the funds to provided immediate relief to these families. Thank you once again.

Dear Donors and followers

I would like to update you with news of the fund raising campaign for Fallen Afghan Journalists. $34,475 has been raised and I would like to give my heart felt thanks towards all those who have donated funds or have spread the word. I have now made the decision to withdraw funds so that we may transfer the money to the widows of the deceased where it is needed.

Kimberley Motley (the lawyer for the New York Times Bureau in Kabul) will facilitate the transfer of funds from her dollar account to the Afghan Journalists Safety Committee account in Kabul. I will then oversee the allocation of funds to those identified as next of kin of the deceased.

I would like to thank all those who have assisted the campaign. I will keep all followers updated.

Dear All

Thank you very much for your generosity. We have now reached $20,000. I am over-awed by the support we have received. I plan to raise enough money to support the families during the first couple of years of loss. This is no easy task as the number of casualties was high. Please spread the link, and thank you once again for your kind support in words and donations.
