Support a Refugee Family in T.O

$12,121 of $15,000 goal

Raised by 87 people in 5 months
Created October 1, 2018

We are a diverse group of people living in and around Toronto, coming together to sponsor and support a refugee family during their first year of settlement. As a group, we feel moved by the ongoing migrant crises around the world and desire to take action.

Our group will be sponsoring a Somali woman and her 3 young children, expected to arrive in Canada shortly.

Your donation will assist this refugee family with their living costs and daily needs as well as with the high cost of rent in Toronto. All funds raised will go directly to the support of this family.

Thank you for your generous donation and support!

Who we are:

We are a diverse group of people living in and around Toronto, coming together to sponsor and support a refugee family during their first year of settlement.

Where you're from:

We are from Toronto and the surrounding areas.

Your relationship to the parties you're raising funds for:

Under the government of Canada's private refugee sponsorship program, we are responsible for settling the family during their first 12 months in Canada - this includes supporting to find housing, health care,  education, and social support. It also includes all financial support, assisting budgeting and obtaining funds from government programs, and the like.

How the funds will be used:

The funds will be used to support the family's cost of living in Toronto (food, rent, clothing, furniture), as well as repaying the flight loans that the family owes for their travel to Canada. The funds will be withdrawn, and then placed in a bank account belonging to the mother which will be opened soon after she arrives in Canada. If timelines require, we will hold that money on trust in a special bank account until she is able to open the account.

To our generous supporters:

The 6IX Sponsor Group is incredibly grateful for all of your generous support, and we are excited to share an update on the family we are resettling.

The family (Mom and her three young children) arrived on November 5th, tired from their two day journey.

They were greeted by many members of our group, and brought to their temporary Airbnb home. The kids napped in the car, but their energy quickly restored when crayons and toys were offered upon arrival at their unit.

In the days following, the family welcomed daily visits from our group members. With this, Mom and her kids accessed interpretation services, explored their community (lots of playground visits), grocery shopped, generally settled into their new lives in Canada, and accessed the following services: dentistry, banking, government programs (OHIP, SIN, Ontario Child Benefit, libraries, settlement services), and school enrollment.

This weekend, the family moved into their own apartment in the west end of the city, close to an established Somali community. The move was a great success, and fell on one of the children’s birthday no less! Birthday cake and a pinata were excitedly enjoyed by the children and our group members alike.
Mom is doing very well. She is very passionate about education, both for herself and her children. She works very hard on reading and comprehension and she is very grateful to be in Canada.

The children are also doing very well. They are very interested in learning English (they have learned numbers and letters already), are so playful and charming, and are getting quite familiar with Disney’s catalogue of kids films.

And perhaps most importantly, the children are off to their first day of school on Tuesday. A huge milestone for this family.

Again – thank you for your generous support. Without you providing funds, this family would be in a very different position. You have made a true impact in their lives.

If you are available, please visit us on December 11, at 8pm at The Baby G (1608 Dundas Street West) to celebrate your impact. Members of our Sponsor Group are re-uniting their band, The Lovely Feathers, to celebrate and encourage others to resettle those in need. Great news all - the family is arriving on Monday! Our team is working hard to provide a wonderful welcome to Canada.

And more great news - we have hit our fundraising goal (thanks to funds raised outside of gofundme)! So, we are going to close this campaign, and member of our finance committee, Art Lange will be withdrawing the funds. Art and the finance committee will work with the family to get a bank account ready asap (we need them present at the branch, of course). Once all is in order, Art will transfer funds into that account, and we will work with the family to understand budgeting and the like.

Thank you so much for your support - we are overwhelmed with everyone's generosity.

For more information on our settlement efforts, feel free to email Mike (finance and fundraising committee member) - his email is on the campaign page.
