Xavier's Story:
Xavier Torres was a six year old kindergartener at Fostertown Elementary School in Newburgh, NY. Xavier was a superhero by every sense of the word, he fought a brave battle with brain cancer for three and a half years before he passed on May 12, 2015. Xavier never let his illness define him, or limit him in any way and he was a symbol of strength and bravery to all who knew him. Despite all the treatments, surgeries and obstacles he faced, he always found a way to smile at strangers, laugh hard, tell jokes and show love selflessly. Xavier had an infectious laugh that would fill the halls of the hospitals when we visited for treatment. He called all the nurses his "girlfirends". He was a celebrity just about everywhere he went and brought so many people together throughout his journey, letting his charismatic personality shine. He loved dressing up as Superman, Batman and Spiderman as well as role playing Firefighter and Police Officer. Three local Fire Depts adopted Xavier as an honorary Chief of the Department and gave him an official fire helmet. The local Police Dept made Xavier an honorary police officer as well and when Xavier passed, there were over 100 servicemen in attendance. Xavier's best friends were his two sisters Natalia (age 8) and Taliana (age 3). Together they loved to play at Chadwick Lake Park, had funny dance parties at home and enjoyed swimming in the pool every chance they got. It would mean so much to our family if we could dedicate a Firetruck themed playground piece at Chadwick Lake Park in Xavier's memory to honor the servicemen that showed our Xavier so much love as well as our own superhero Xavier. Xavier is a true superhero and will continue to have his story told for many years to come.
