Shining Stars Montessori Academy (www.shiningstarspcs.org) is a public charter school in Ward 4, Washington DC that serves 124 children ranging in age from 3-7.
This year the school relocated to a building that has very limited outdoor playspace. In fact, they share a small narrow strip of fenced, mulched, land with another school (see photo above). There is no play equipment on the playground and the options for adding any are limited because of the narrow dimensions of the lot. Enter: Imagination Playground.
"Imagination Playground is an innovative playground equipment system that transforms any space — schools, children's museums, parks and recreation, daycare centers, camps, hospitals, churches — into a play space that encourages learning, social development, movement, and above all fun. Imagination Playground is a mobile play system made up of big blue blocks in many unique shapes and sizes.
"Using Imagination Playground blocks, kids build a new world every day. They make objects like animals, rocket ships, and robots. They make imaginary places like houses, factories, and cities. They make new dramatic scenarios, settings, and games to play. Most important, they make the rules. Because Imagination Playground is child-directed and open-ended, it encourages self-expression through deep, joyful play."
The blocks come with storage carts that allow for easy moving and storing of the equipment and will move with the school wherever it goes.
This fundraising campaign aims to raise enough money to buy 2 such sets of blocks with storage carts.
Look at the photo above. And now imagine lots of bright blue blocks scattered among the mulch. Now imagine a bunch of 3-7-year olds among those blocks, running around building all kinds of things. What a difference, right?
